  1. 99/100 times your amp will not go up in smoke if the speaker wires touch each other, the amp goes into protect mode as if it was a speaker short or to low of a resistance. But you need to cover them, tape them off or something. I made my sub box removable because when I go to the In-laws I need the space under the rear bench seat, so what I do is I put the speaker wire terminals in a plastic baseball card case that hold 50 cards and I have a switch in line of the remote wire to the sub amp. This way, if I switch the amp off via the remote wire, if it accidentally gets switch back on, my speaker wires are still separated and isolated.

    Two-way active front stage

Cheerio, cheerio, I see your point and it's well made. That's why I asked active vs passive, and you clarified. The tips I have, mid range and tweet as close together as possible, Mid bass where you can fit it with good output. Of course all options will take testing. That is the easiest way when setting up actively and for the most part it's how the 3-way passives are designed.

Sub/midbass on seperate amps stopped working?

There's got to be more to it then that. The odds are highly against the possibility that both mids and the subs would quit. Mess w/a few settings on the HU. Switch amps, switch RCA's, barrow amps to temp replace them if you have to, replace comps/subs to see if other known working subs play, check for the continuity of the fuses. A blown or damaged fuse will cause amps to do some weird things.

    Two-way active front stage

Please back this up with something (proof) we can see. I know they're a bitch to tune, I know, I run a 3-way front end and it's a nightmare. Are you saying that a 3-way isn't a good idea in a car, or that running a 3-way PASSIVELY isn't a good idea as apposed to running it actively?

    midrange/ passive crossover compatibility

Xovers are all coils and caps. The speaker that is hooked to it could care less as long as the crossover freq and slope allow it to play in its range. Some xovers might be designed to tame an output, like the tweeter, because their tweeter might be to harsh, but other then that it doesn't matter. Some sort of tweeter protection might also be added to the mix. One thing you have to look at is the ohm of the speakers being used as that will change the xover point. People all the time, esp in the 90's, used MB Quart musicomp xovers for various drivers not of their own with 0 problems.
  6. SoundStream Tarantula, what model??
  7. Our trucks suck in the mid range area, it's the doors. You'll need to build a sealed pod for the mid in order for it to appear. You can fit an 8" behind the grille, directly on the door. You can fit a 5 1/4" above that on the door panel. I know a guy that has his that way. I have a 6 1/2" in there that I'm going to build a sealed pod for this summer, 3" mid + 1" tweet in the A-pillar. The 3"/1" xover is done via passive. The xover between the 6 1/2" & 3" is active. So I'm passively active.
  8. Look for a few 8" subs, like DD 9512, JL 8w7, TREO SSi8. A single 8 from these will do. You can make a baffle to fit over the 12" opening and put the 8" sub in there. At that air space you could even port it for an 8". TREO's TSX line would do good in that size box too.

    12gauge speaker wire, enough?

Unless you're after all out SPL, there's no gain to be had running something bigger then 12 gauge.

    What is considered Mid Bass?

Generally it's ~100Hz to 500Hz. But he is correct, As far as I know, there is no "set in stone" range.
  11. Remove the amp and hook it up directly to the battery just to the amps +/-. Does it turn on? If it doesn't then jump a wire from the + to the rem. Does it now turn on? That will tell you if it's the amp or in your wiring.

    New PG amplifiers

The new Ti line will have something of similar performance. If room allows in my truck, I'll be getting a Ti800.4 and the Ti2500.1, if not then it'll be the Ti600.4 and the Ti2500.1 Sup Denim!?

    Looking for subs for truck

The sundowns are nice. Heard 4 of them and loved them. Another brand of shallow that I love is Clarions.

    Chops subwoofer.

I know you do. When I go to car audio shows, I represent! PG baby! Boy Denim, you sure do know how to confuse. Denim was replying to the post I made about describing myself and the shirt I was wearing. I went to school w/a guy named Ashley too. He was a wrestler and beat me in a match, 9 to 6.

Yea I was there. I didn't realize you were there. That suck. Could've met in person for the first time. If you saw a guy wearing a white T that had the PG logo on the back and said phoenixphorum.com, that was me. I was just there yesterday, wife told me to go . I didn't know they knew you that well. My truck was parked across the street at ardvark where we weren't supposed to park next to the semi trailer that was at the loading dock. For the comp I helped set up and spent most of the time sitting in the install bay that was open and next to or ON Coopers truck. I don't know if you saw the #14 camping chair there, that was mine. Tony Stewart baby! Hotdog eating contest for the kids

    Clarion VZ409

The next time I see Andy I'll try and gather the info and send it along. But yes I'm serious. The one thing I despise it someone that posts false content. Andy uses Sundown amps as well as two other of his friends/competitors and they all have been docked pts for noise in the system and they traced it back to the amps in all 3 cases. He was talking about getting some new amps but didn't know what brands to go w/yet.

    Audio Control

Been using Audio Control for over 15 yrs and though I had a break from them a while back, I'm once again using them. Their products are top notch and their customer support, though a bit rough around the edges, took care of the repair issue at hand. It was my fault, I shorted out the grounding trace in my DQS when a live speaker wire grounded out to the chassis of the truck.

Wiring Up 1 DVC Sub , to 2 channels of an amp.

He states he already has the Pyramid amp lying around so $$ wasn't spent this time around for that amp. To the original Q, yes you can do it, but do yourself a favor and get a 0 dB test tone at ~60Hz and set a DMM to VAC and take a reading on the amp at the amps speaker terminals and see what the voltage is per ch. Sense the rear 2 chs on that amp share the same gain pot, if the reading is more then .5 VAC between the two chs then DO NOT run it this way.

A friend competes SQ in ???MECAi???? and he and a few others use sundown amps and they're getting docked points for noise. It's been traced down to be the amps. They might have good xovers, but they're "noisy". He's switching them out soon. W/what I don't know. If you ever get the chance to swing over to Lafayette, IN and go to Sound Check. See what they suggest. I'm biased to PG so that's what I'd say to use, but for good reasons. I'll have to look into that clarion HU.
  21. Just because some people said they like a 3-way doesn't mean that's what you're going to like. Tuning is going to be a real b!tch. I'm currently doing a 3-way in my truck, but I'm after the "perfect" sound stage, if there is such a thing? I myself am thinking about going back to a 2-way. Another option would be to get a 4"/1" comp set and use that as the mid/tweet in a 3-way. You'd use the passive xover that came w/the set to xover those and get a dedicated mid and use the xover on the amp/s you chose to get. That's how I did it. A good SQ amp that will do what you want would be an older Phoenix Gold ZX450. You can bandpass the rear channels and even though it's rated at 75 x4, most have benched in the 110 x 4 range and have lots of headroom. A friend of mine competes in SQ in ???? MECAi ??? and he, along w/a few others that run Sundown amps, are getting docked points due to noise in the sytem. After trouble shooting and amp switching, they've found it's the amps. I know you said you're not competing, but it's worth thinking about.

    Chops subwoofer.

Dude, I live there. My nick name there is "Tony Fu@k!ng Stewart". Their old installer (Eric) called me that because every time I would show up I was wearing Stewart apparel. Lucky me, the wife kicks me out and tells me to go there just about every Tuesday. I hang out at the one on Farabee, not the newer one on the corner of SR 26 and Creasy. So if you ever go there and state the name in that EXACT way, they'll know. LMK

Dynaudio System 240 MKII active, not passive. That damn poly-silicon switch., that's why I bypassed the passive and went active.
