    slot port question

ok. i built my boxes (still unsure about the subs), and the port came out looking funny. I'm almost sure, but just to be extra sure, i figured someone could help me out. when i ported my boxes, i took the cubic inches of a different boxe's port (3 cubes at 34 htz) and used the same on my 3 cube box (also at 34 htz) the difference is that it isnt as deep, but longer... even though the dimensions are different, because they both have the same cubic inches of port, it's still tuned to the same freq, correct? thanks

    slot port question

well i took the box dementions from pre-made boxes for memphis subs- just a bunch of dimentions written on a chart giving the optimum box volume and tunings for all of their subs. i got them from a friend that works at an audio shop. the box was 3 cubes, ported at 34 htz... the port dementions it asked for was 14.5x1.25x15.... so if that isnt correct dimentoins then i'm not sure what to do..... but the box i BUILT is 3 cubes and has a port demention of 2x13.75x10 (and yes, the slot port is on the same side of the speaker).... so what is that box tuned to? (the box is 3 cubes AFTER port displacement)... if there is any other info u need please let me know, because it's going to help me set my amp's xovers and filters.

it was 14.5x1.25x15, and i switched it to 13.75x2x10

    slot port question

sorry- The box is 3 cubes, and i took the cubic inches of an older 3 cubes boxe's port and basically just switched the #'s around to come up with a new port with the same area of the older one.

i like what i've heard so far...

i'm running an elemental designes nine.1... (i've heard) it pushes around 1200 rms @ 1 ohm, and i was feeding about 200 a peice to the pr's... so i'll be using more wattage running the two d3's.... i went ahead and did a little more researching and looked at the d6's and in the same box it would take for one d3 12 i could fit 2 d6 10's... and i looked at www.realmofexcursion.com and a guy hit i think it was like 136 w/ a pair of tens!! and i'm almost sure that's what i was hitting with my 3 12's in my truck which is almost unbelievable (well, comming from some 10's in that small of a box)... So if that's the case then i think i could get away w/ putting 3 10's in my trunk and be King of the streets around here lol... most of the people around where i live stay with kicker, mostly comp vr's... well i'm definitely not a big fan of the vr's and will NEVER run a set, so i'd like to get some more options in mind before i buy.... so If i was to bump up the price range on some speakers to compare to the 3 pr's (around $400 shipped) what would be my options? i'm pretty much limited to only about 6 cu feet max, my trunk openings REALLY small, so aside of building in the trunk, i'll have to put 2 3 cu ft. boxes in seperately... thanks -d
  6. in a truck, i used to run 3 memphis pr 12's in a ported box around 40 htz. the subs were awesome, i loved them, but since i can't put all 3 in my new car's truck, i'm looking for a new pair of subs that will give the memphis' a run for their money. i've done some reading on the diamond audio d3's and liked what i've heard so far. a few people said they slammed, but mostly i've heard a lot of compliments on their sq. well it's all good w/ the sq and all, but i'm looking for something that'll straight up S L A M !! will these do the trick in a box ported around 35 htz? and if you have any suggestoins that's cool too... i'm buying off of e bay, so i'd like to keep it around 200 for the pair.

    What to expect

I know I know... This is the 2nd time i've asked this question, but noone seems to read old forums so I figured i'd ask again and see if anyone can help me out.... So has Anyone ever heard the Diamond Audio D3 12's? i'm switching from 3 memphis power reference 12's in a ported box (40 htz) in an extended cab truck to 2 D3 12's in a ported box (34) in a trunk of a grand prix... can anyone give me a heads up as to the loudness difference btw the 2? i'm hoping to get at least just as much sound out of the d3's as the pr's...

i like what i've heard so far...

P.S. the d3's are now going in the trunk of a car.

i like what i've heard so far...

Yea, but the d3's are $200 shiped for the pair... that seems really cheap, but that's about what the pr's cost too... So am i really looking at that much of an upgrade? i was running 3 pr 12's ported to 40 htz in an ext. cab truck, and i'll be switching to 2 diamond audio d3's tuned to 34.... is it going to be at least AS loud?

    is a bigger box worse?

daamn, i figured that.... i just wanted better low-end... but i guess i would have gotten that just because i was switching from a car to a truck... so about 40 would give a lot more spl than a box tuned to 34 huuh... well it's not bad i can just build another one later on and decide which one i like better.... so u think i'd get better output from a box @ 3 cubes tuned to 40?
  11. the diamond audio d3 12's i'm getting are asking for 2 cubes in a ported enclosure.... well I have some extra room and I made up some plans for a box that's 3 cubes and ported at 34 htz..... is going bigger than the recommended volume actually worse? same thing for the tuning freq..... i don't know what they're SUPPOSED to be tuned at, but i think their response is 25-250... so i thought 34 would be low enough to make 'em pound... what do you think?

    is a bigger box worse?

Less power. Efficieny increases and cone control decreases. You have a greater chance of reaching mechanical limits of the driver in the larger enclosure. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Correct. I understand that, but is 24 htz a good tune to port the subs at? or will i gain more sound out of a higher tuned box?
  13. Derek_K

    is a bigger box worse?

right. well, i've read that the diamond audio's are geared more toward sq, so i'd like to get as much spl as possible.... so would it be better to port them a little higher?

Having a problem porting my box

right... yea i figured that'd be the easiest way to go, but it still might be a space issue, so i was thinking about "aiming" the subs upward toward the trunk... would that be a problem? because if not i'd have to put the speakers more towards the middle of the trunk, taking away both access to the spare and the actual trunk itself (by the way, i'm running 3 memphis power reference 12's).
  15. I used to drive a chevy silverado, and now I'm driving a pontiac grand prix gtp. in the chevy ontop of the back seat, i had 3 memphis 12's in a ported box tuned around 40 hz. now i'm trying to figure out a box that can fit in the trunk to have the 3 subs ported a little lower, probably around 30. the problem isnt so much that i don't have enough trunk space, but the opening when the trunk's open is EXTREEMLY too small to fit a 6 cu. ft. box ported, so now i need help as to putting them all in.... my first guess would be to build three seperate boxes and put them in that way and maybe bolt them all together or something, but has anyone dealt with grand prixs and have a better solution? 'cause i'm not sure that my option is the best. If you have some opinions, i'd appreciate the feedback.

Having a problem porting my box

yea, i understand, but how would I nail the box together? that seems like the hardest part, unless i would just naill from the inside
  17. I decided on the elemental designs nine.1 - i've heard some pretty good things about it and decided to give it a shot. good decision or bad? let me know what you guys think
  18. ooh, I think it's 6^3's too, and there's a port on both sides
  19. what is the box tuned to? did they built exzactly to memphis specs? if so, they are tuned about 40hz. in which case a lower tuned box will help immensely. the enclosure i did is a common chamber 6ft^3 net box with ~62in^2 of port tuned to 36hz. it gets low. his ranger is basiclly falling apart on the inside. for the money, you have very nice subs. your box is the issue, not the subs as far as the lowlows go... wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee <{POST_SNAPBACK}> well thanks for the input about the subs, and yea, I like them a lot too. about the box, yea, the box is tuned to the specs of the subs. the local dealership did everything for me, gave me the plans, and i built it. I don't know exactly what they're tuned to, but the port is 3 1/2 in wide, 11 1/2 in long and i think 4 in deep on both sides.... but I'm almost positive they did it to specs, but the thing is that it hits REALL hard on the higher bass notes, but just isnt as strong on the lower notes... and being that all i listen too is mostly rap, I need them to get lowlow..... can I just change the port without building a whole new box or do I need to make up another one?
  20. hahahahah!! yea, that was pretty funny but the thing is that I didnt set it up, it was all set up by a local auto shop so i'll have the warranties, but he said he turned the amp way down, almost 1/2 way down, so they're only getting around 250... but still, it's pretty damn loud! I'm totally happy with the sound as of now, there just isnt as much low-end as I want... would a lower ported box do the trick or is the sub just not built for lower notes?
  21. yea, i figured that out fast! it came with a gain knob and if i turn it up any more than 1/4 of the way up the speakers distort... the amp is phenominally powerfull... it pushed three 12's hard for an hour and was barely even warm... so far so good! and i heard something about subs "breaking in"? i've never broken in subs, but I was told in a couple of weeks they will be louder than when they were first hooked up -- is this true?
  22. I will be running a little over 1000 watts rms, probably around 1200, will there be the need to get an optima yellow top?
  23. what's the big 3? and just another regular battery that I hook up to my power wire?
  24. well i guess not! haha
