  1. I think there is some confusion at play here. But first I would ask why would anyone want an amp the does NOT produce additional power into a lower impedance load (as with JL). There is a term for this and it is called "current limiting" (and it is NOT a good thing). JL opted to adopt the 'constant power' solution, first seen in the PPI 2350 DM (700 watt at 4 ohms mono) as a means to avoid having to over build the amps to deliver the added current that IS required to driver lower impedance loads. Does it work, sure. Is it actually "better," only IF you believe that it is. This is analogous to putting a 'rev limiter' on a motor to make sure the motor does not come apart because the company did not want to spend the money to put in the forged connecting rods so that it COULD rev to 6,000 RPM. (or alternatively electronically limiting the top speed to 125 mph due to not putting ZR rated tires on a specific car). It is simply a way to reduce the cost of materials in an amplifier, but it has been marketed as as some sort of benefit (but I would submit is really disinformation). If you doubth this, then I would ask why that kind of "technology" is just nowhere to be found in high-end home or proaudio amplifiers (see "ohm's law"). If you know what the nominal or DC resistance of your subwoofer system is, then it would make sense to opt for an amp that is optimized to drive that load. I would also submit that the penalty you pay in sound-quality for running an amp at '1 ohm' is NOT worth the modest actual power output (not some optimistic spec) you may gain (vs. 2 ohms). By contrast, a tightly regulated power supply will deliver full power at 12 - 13V, as previously described. I would submit that well engineered regulated amps, which should deliver close to 2X higher power into 2 ohms (vs. 4 ohms), just 'sound' better IMHO. But these days amps of this type are pretty rare and typically very expensive. If I start out with one 4 ohm sub, but add a second one later, so now I have a 2 ohm load, I would absolutely prefer to have my amp add more power to the system, rather than just splitting the total power between the two subs. But that's just me... Cheers! Rick
  2. I concur 110%. I have two of these beauties and they are the best bang 4 the buck, for a system amp, that I have ever seen (and esp have actually heard). Most 5/6 channel system amps just do not have enough juice for a decent sub setup (see Alpine PDX5 etc). My friend had, past tense, one of those, and it was just not enough on his pair of 10's. Rick
  3. Well I guess we know how high "up" now is. On the otherhand, can you say 'overkill' ? Like that Kicker Warhorse, unless your into the SPL race, I think it is just silly, since it obviously was not designed to reproduce music. Cheers! Rick

    New Zed Audio amp review

That cool that you can just 'buy and hold' for future use. I thinking of putting both my Leviathans in to the M3 and going all active, but not sure I need all that power, plus I am kinda spooked I will spoil how great it sounds now. So I am all good for now I guess. I am not aware of any other full-range Class D amps, other than the HD's that have this kind of SQ and power output. At least I have yet to see any review that backs up the claims that mfg may have about their new wonder amps (call me skeptical, but I like to see some third party proof before I will buy stuff). Cheers! Rick

    New Zed Audio amp review

Just got back from vacation in Mexico and had chance to catch up on my reading, including the new issue of PAS. Having already bought a couple of these amps, based on the first killer review, all I can say now is, Wow, just wow! I am way happy with my Leviathans, esp for the money, and am glad that the guy from PAS was totally impressed too, but not surprised in the least... If you have not seen this, check it out, it is worth the read. Performance Auto and Sound - The Girls - The Cars - The Life - ZED Audio - Leviathan Cheers! Rick

    Eclipse no more?

Sad but true and I think pretty inevitable. Any company that has an Jap OEM mindset (we only care about Toyota's needs), that is does not have a single-minded goal of making the the right kind of products, and has American leadership, is most likely going to fail here in US. That's my .02 cents. Really sad, just sad. Rick

    Nakamichi By Zed?

I am pretty sure that they have not been built by Zed for many years, though I know at some point Zed did make a few models for them, but not for over a decade, if I recall. They were good amps, like everything I know of that Zed ever produced. I recently redid my system with a Leviathan and it just rocks. The 600 mono on the subs, is ALL I need, esp since it is a 24dB bandpass, so the bass is exactly how I want it. Cheers! Rick

    Bi-amping components

Many quality passives have 'bi-wire' inputs, so the HP for the tweeters and LP for the mids are separate, but in same chassis. This is not as good as having dedicated amp channels for each, but I have found IF you have the extra amp ch to use, then they are best served by running them on dedicated door midbass, and using passives for tw/mid and or rear fill. esp if you have a front 3-way system, as I prefer. This way, the mids are relieved of lots of midbass work. I also found that running rear-fill in parallel with front midbass, works well, provided they are attenuated to suite taste (tweeters in the rear are really not necessary), and or coax work just great (esp if you can attenuate the tweeters. Cheers, Rick
