SPL & SQ / Fabrication

Calculations, Concepts, Designs, Theories. All General SPL Or SQ Questions Can Be Discussed Here.

  1. Started by johnecon2001,

I'm trying to figure out the main differences between inverting a sub or flush mounting it like normal. I don't know if there is sonic difference or if the main theory behind it is to just show off the backside of the driver. I've got two DPL's that I'm going to use sealed. I was thinking around 1.5^3ft each.. but if there is a way to go smaller without sacrificing SQ I could go for that too. They'll each be on a separate channel on my ARC Audio 2500CXL (rated at a conservative 270x2 @ 4ohms). My max dimensions to work with in my trunk are 16Tx26Dx35W. Of course, going smaller would be a plus.

  3. Okay, so I had two questions: How does inverting your subwoofers affect SPL/""SQL"" if at all? & How would I go about making one side of my enclosure plexi-glass? (how to secure it to the box) Just asking because I've never done either before and was thinking about one or the other for my next build. Thanks guys!

I have an RE Audio SX 18. I've heard rumors that this sub can do 2,000 watts RMS fairly easily in the right box. I currently have about 500 watts going to this sub in a 10ft^3 box tuned at around 30 Hz. It's pretty loud. I got pulled over a few days ago for having my music too loud and the officer said "Dude, you were shaking my car, what do you have back there?" Got off without a ticket . I wanted to step it up a notch so I just ordered a Hifonics Brutus BRZ1700.1D. Which does 1700 RMS @ 1 ohm. I designed a box with a net volume of 7.19ft^3 tuned to exactly 34 Hz. Sub up, port back. (My old box was sub back, port back.) For the record, this is going in a 2006 Expedition.…

  8. I would like to make a vented box similar to this with the top ledge on it. The pic attached is of my current box. The front of the box is to the right. I'd like to make a ported box in the same shape with two ports each pointing out of the top directly through my open 6x8 speaker holes in the deck.

I'm running an Fi BL 15 on a sundown sae-1200d in a scion tc. Bought a prefab box for it a couple of months ago but im looking to get my system as loud as possible (currently upgrading electrical as well). The box seems to be tuned around maybe 50hz or so, as in Young jeezy's song "white girl" (i believe it has a 30hz note and a 50hz note) and the 50hz one hits way harder than the 30. If i built a new box, and tuned it to around 33hz, in that song it would be the other way around having the 30hz note be the louder one correct? Heres the box that I have now: http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/1833/img2746u.jpg How much would it cost roughly to build a new box like this (s…

i had a rockford fosgate t1d415 before and ive been messing around with custom boxes for a little while. i didnt know too much about winisd back then. luckily my first box i built for it played very nice and didnt have any port noise. i tuned it around 34hz if i remember correctly. i loved how low it could get down. i played into the lower/mid 20's (i know i was playing a bit lower than the tuning freq) and loved it. this time around im going to design a box for my fi sp4 15. it should be here any day (i hope) and i'd like to be tuned low. heres my current design for it. can you guys let me know if my design is ok. i know the port is a little skinny but it looks like the …

Hey all.I was wondering if my port is to close to my rear hatch. My friends and I both seem to think my system should be louder and I seem to think that it might be my port being to close to my rear hatch and not having enough room to breathe. My system consists of a DC 5k and 4 10" DC lvl 3 m2 subs with the level 4 upgrades. My enclosure was made by DC Creations and is 4.5 cubes after displacments (I believe) and tuned to 33hz.Here is a pic of what im talking about with the port.I can take a better pic if need be.So what im wondering is if I flip the box around with the port facing into the cabin instead of towards the hatch, would it help out any or would a enclosure with s…

I have plenty of room for my overall volume, but fitting 3 10's and a port on the face is my challenge. I am going to have a box of around 3.25-3.75 ft^3 tuned to around 35. I was going for around 60 in^2 port area, my inside dimension is going to be 30.5 so that leaves me with a port that is 2" tall by 30.5" wide. Ive already done the math and have the depth on the box to easily fit the port length, but is there any reasons against a port of this shape? I thought about using about 4-5 4 inch round ports, which is either 48 or 60 in^2, but with either route I need to have ports longer than will fit inside the box, and I will not run an exterior port because this is my dai…

Hi guys. I will have some time to hang out next week and wanted to use up all my extra MDF. I wanted to attempt to make a 4th order bandpass to put a couple PWX 10's in there and hook it up to my xbox. I know they are not subwoofers but they are my test speakers. If this box turns out good I will refine my design for a couple of real subs. This is what I have come up with. Each side chamber is 1 ft^3 sealed and the center chamber is 2 ft^3 tuned at 33hz. I have no clue how a 4th order works but this is what I have come up with. If you could explain to me how a 4th order works that might help me design this and also let me know if there is anything I can change to make my …

  16. Alrighty, I think I have the new design down. Going to be 4 Se 12' in 8cu.'s after displacements. Powered by 2 SAZ-1500's strapped tuned to 35hz. After doing alot of reading, searching, and math I have come to this: 3 6" aero's ( around 92 sq.in. of port total) for a length of each port to be 18.94"(19.94 overall). Should I have more or less port? I have read and searched through quite a bit of the posts. Some of the math and that calculators I have used said I need around 138sq. in. of port. But I have read that when using aero's you may only approx. need 2/3's of that. So with that in mind what's your opinions. If this is wrong can you point out some more pla…

I am trying to plan how I am going to build a box to go in the ex cab of my toyota truck. I am putting 2 Fi Q15's in it. The space I have to work with is 53'' wide 17'' depth and 22'' tall. I was told to use 1 layer of 3/4'' MDF then after the box is done add a 2nd layer of 3/4'' MDF to the outside of the box to help reinforce it, is this right? This is the first box I have build so I just wanna make sure I get it right. But this is what I have come up with so far, how does is this right, the subs call for about 4 cub feet each tuned to around 33.

Hi i'm new to SSA forums but been around for a while on others. Who has run any type of isobaric set up before? The low end is efforless and immense and all from a smaller enclousere. Also the smaller cab plays the higher freqs really well and just makes for a very flat output over the whole range whilst still staying controlled. Basicly the iso' only makes use of the extra motor and has no real use of the other cone. Or even the other basket for that matter although the other basket make the whole rig easier to mount. I am thinking about a dual motor design and just simply linking the the 2 motors by extending the the formers so they meet. Who thinks this is a good idea…

alright. ive got the dimensions. i have 2 options of building this. its kind of going to be trial and error until i find the right height i want the desk to be, but here it goes. the box needs to be 4.5 cubes each (2 seperate boxes) and tuning...im guessing like 20ish or 24hz or something? 95% of the time its for rap music. once in a blue moon i may watch a movie on it. but for the most part, i want it to sound best on rap music. the dimensions im working with are 39" x 37" (width and length) using those 2 dimensions, i need to see how high it will be to make 4.5 cubes after determining the tuning and port length, etc. if i like the height, ill build the box using that wi…

The site lists 1.8 cu.ft. for the IXL 12 SL. I am assuming this is for either home or car use, so would a box approximately 1.52 ft3 with pollyfill be adequate? More specifically my dimensions are: 17"x15.5" top/bottom 15.5"x11.5" r-side/l-side/inner baffle 17"x13" front/back internal: 15.5"x14.75"x11.5" This is attempt number 2 for a box. I needed some mdf for door speaker baffles and had to buy a whole sheet so I figured out all the numbers for a 1.35 cu.ft. box because thats what i remebered and had it cut at lowes today (actually I have enough for 2 boxes that size). I got home to make sure i remembered right, and of course 1.35 is for the icon, the other sub I was t…
