I was just thinking of this the other day and my general knowledge of physics dosnt lead me anywhere. Extreme DB levels seem to be in the mid 170's and slowly getting a little bit higher. Would it be phyically or humanly possible to make a subwoofer that moves air fast enough to create a sonic boom? It just moves faster and faster until the air it is displacing breaks the sound barrier! In which case I think that would be able to be higher than 170's, though im still not sure. What do you guys know about something like this? Im sure there is some sort of law of physics that would completely disregard this theory.

I dont compete. My last 3 systems were with the port on the right hand side. But I like the design of the center port and it will also help with loading issues. Will it sound different with the port being in the center since im used to it being on the right. These are the 2 im looking at heres one heres the one i really liked

I tried to read the threads on how to make a slot port and etc. etc. I tried to use the ones on the net, but people keep saying they are off. So if you happen to have microsoft excel, you can use this on and plug and chug some numbers in to get your required port length. This is based off the equation on JL Audio's site and it also takes into account End correction. If anyone has any input or if the JL Audio equation is wrong, then let me know, I just wanted to do my port right. http://www.uploading.com/files/CFXVZ5QA/Sl...ulator.xls.html

Now I know this has a lot to do with individual preference so this will be very subjective. I was thinking today about where cassette tapes rank as far as audio mediums. I have never seen a real list broken down anywhere, just someone saying "Vinyl is better than CD's" or something of that nature. Let me know if I forgot anything, but this is what I could remember off of the top of my head (not in order obviously). How would most "audiophiles" arrange these from best sounding to worst? DVD-A/SACD (possibly separate?) Cassette Tape Vinyl Digital Storage (Flash/Hard Drive) 8-Track Reel Tape CD

Ok I was wondering what is the typical impeadence rise of voice coils? this is why I ask. I have a TC sounds 3000 15 dvc 2 in a 3ft^3 sealed enclosure. I currently am running it in series to get a 4 ohm load on my Phoenix Gold Tantrum 1200.1, This amp is 2 ohm stable. now I have read that at rest most coils are under their rating (please correct me if I am wrong) so does this mean when power is put to them that thay rise to their stated ohm? maybe totally dependent on manufacture? enclosure size? sealed? vented? my main question is is there a better way I should be wiring my sub to my amp? (or is this the best way) if I wired in parallel would I get a 1 ohm load or …

pretty much my truck is telling me no to this system. I installed my box, wired my subs, wired the amp, fired it up... nothing amp comes on, zero output to subs. I do hear a whine through the door speakers if I rev the engine. -installed new RCA's -I have a 1/0 copper wire running to the frame as my ground. and after no sound I grinded the frame down to bare shiny metal. -checked all the fuses. -checked all the wires. -Rechecked all fuses and wires. -moved and jiggled the whole length of RCA -took the remote wire out and jumped a wire from the power to the rem When I turn the volume up on the HU as soon as a hard not comes through, the amp hits the subs once then goes int…

so many of you get that you need a pretty big amp for a pretty big woofer, but intuitively this makes little sense right? a big motor should in fact be more efficient! bob explains this pretty well why this is not true... http://www.sunfire.com/pdf/woofwhiteall.pdf

Hey, I just bought a Velleman HPS10 oscope a couple days ago. Im trying to configure it, but am stuck on one step. I cant set up the x10 measuring probe. I set the scope and probe to the 10x position. I also set the voltage/division to 1v and time/division to .1ms I think I set it to AC mode too. Does the "~" sign symbolize AC mode? When I touch the "Probe Test" point on the back of the scope, the screen of the oscope doesnt appear to show a signal because its blank. The directions say to adjust the trimmer. What exactly is the trimmer? Also, should the negative probe be grounded in this step? If so, what should it be grounded to? Thanks in advance for the help.

okay so a couple weeks ago my first h/o alt that i had singer instal a self excite and extrenal reg. on started being all buggy and sometimes not charging at all when i would turn on my car, well it just finally started getting colder in mn so I kinda wondered if that was the problem, anyway i already had a better alt on the way, a mechman 320 self excite. and when i installed it i was in a friends heated garage, and it fired up right away. Now every morning on my way to work it takes like 5-10 minutes of straight battery power before the alt kicks on. however if I drive home from work, get same problem, but then maybe an hour after car sits when i get home I go out aga…

ok, see if you can follow me, to create a sonic boom an object has to travel 720mph rite? A driver displaces air to make sound rite, so if I had a sub that would displace air at 720mph could I create a sonic boom in my car? Or would it create an ungodly amount of db's? Also, how loud is a sonic boom? Or is speed and sound not relative to pressure? Or would the sub make no sound at all since it would be traveling faster than the speed of sound or would it just be delayed? would the car explode? just trying to keep those good minds working. lol

Hi Guyz, Not sure if I'm in the right section... Firstly, please don't flame me on this one... Just trying new things. Let's say I will use a Maxxbass 103 processor that adds upper harmonics to the sound, making a component sounds like it is playing deeper due to the psychoacoustical effect. I have also read that it actually decreases (on some frequencies) the Xmax by 4. The component I'd like to use in that example is the RL-i8 Here is my question: Due to having the Xmax decreased, will that mean the component can handle more power 1/ for not reaching maximum excursion with the power applied 2/ for having a dual voice coil instead of one - that might sound stupid…

Hi guyz... Happy New Year, all the best, keep safe and healthy. On to the topic. I would like to know if an amp @ 4 ohm pushing 600 watts will draw the same (amperage) as opposed to the same amp pushing 600 watts but at @ 2 ohm (hope that is english lol) Not sure if it has been answered before. Thanks for the help. Kelvin

So within a few months I will be getting the '13 Fusion and I want to do an active setup. I really don't know much about the speaker choices, best crossover points, processing so I'm relying on you guys to help me get a good front stage. Right now I want to start planning; don't want to rush it when the time comes. So what will I need? amp, speakers (2 6.5 mids and 2 tweeters), minidsp? I will keep the stock hu and use a LC2i. My budget as of right now is undetermined as I want to see prices of everything then see what I should spend. My goals really are simple. I want it to be loud enough to hear vocals over the bass when the subs are high and I want the mid bass t…

Alright all you smart folk, here's what I am wanting: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...tnumber=180-960 I want to be able to run that directly off of my car's electrical system. You can see from the description that it runs off of 6VDC from the included power supply. So, what would be needed is a power supply to convert the 12VDC from my electrical system to 6VDC. I've also had something about Zener Diodes mentioned to me....but I'm not really sure what those are all about. Anybody want to give me a quick run down of the best way to go, and how each is accomplished (i.e. what a simple yet effective PS design would consist of, what Zener diodes do and if they …

I've been toying with the idea of using a horn in a spl application (one note wonder, as efficient as possible) for a few weeks now.. Instead of a regular wall, with the woofers and port on the wall, me and a friend had the idea of using a horn, with the opening as the whole front of the wall. It would be a front loaded horn, exponential, loaded with some sort of efficient pro-audio woofer, not the "horns" that have popped up in the car audio scene. Apart from the difficulty of fitting a horn (around 22ft long for the woofer I'm thinking about, should be shorter for a very narrow bandwidth), any problem with using it in such a small space ? Or any sort of other problem…

I've been looking around at some different subs, trying to decide what I want to do for a summer project. I want to do my own work, i.e., build my own box, replace door speakers, etc. I've been looking at subs on Parts Express, like Dayton and Tang Band. I've been all over their websites, but can't find any recommendations for box sizes or types (ported, sealed, etc). So, my two questions are: 1) How do you calculate box size requirements using the specs that are provided? 2) How can you tell what type of enclosure a sub will work best in? I'm specifically interested in very small applications, as I'd like to try and run multiple subs (three or more) and try to retain s…

I am working on my enclosure, and am wondering which way to face the sub. I have 2 options with my limited space, either face the back side of the back seats, or face the rear hatch glass. If I go towards the rear hatch, I cant get much of an angle towards the glass, it would be about 3" below the horizontal line. Sub in question will be a 12" RL-p. MattB

Anyone who's read through my build log knows I had a set of Bravox CS60K components in there for awhile before going to the FR/MB setup. I tried a lot, and I do mean A LOT of things to get the speakers in the component set to sound right and was never able to succeed. In my pursuit of having all the handier tools at my fingertips to use and play with I have been trying to get a DATS V2 from PE for most of the summer and it was finally back in stock this past weekend so I finally got it ordered. It showed up yesterday and to play around with it I connected one of the old midwoofers from the Bravox components just to give it a shot. I got a weird result on the numbers …

I'd just like to bring up a certain point to the every raging debate whether cone size plays a role in a sub's "quickness." At a certain frequency and excursion, any sub's cone will be traveling the same speed. No argument there. But what about the transitions from rest to that frequency and from one frequency to another? I'm looking at the Force = Mass * Acceleration equation here. If both a large sub and a small sub have the same motor structure, I believe it is safe to assume the force is constant. Therefore, an increase in mass has to lead to a decrease in acceleration. Are these differences in acceleration large enough for us to hear? Am I missing some other pa…
