Okay, as the topic says, I'm tired of my RCA HTIB. I'm done for the most part with my car, and would really like to build a nice 2.1 setup. I don't have the money for a 5.1, and rather than getting a mediocre 5.1 I'd rather have a nice 2.1. First off, I need a receiver. I'd like to keep the receiver around $500. Only needs to be a 5.1 with some preamp outputs. Right now, I'm leaning towards and Onkyo. Any other companies you guys suggest? Second: I want to build my speakers. Bookshelves are not out of the question, but I think I might like to try a 3way floor standing speaker. I'll admit, I am new to the HT building so if any of you have a better suggestion let m…

Okay this might sound like a dumb question, but I still need an answer. On The Heathkit AA-151 there is a magnetic input for the Phono. My question being that there are the right and left channel RCA inputs and the ground pin (no phono ground tie spot on back of amp). Do I tie that to the chassis ground or common ground? I'm assuming the common because almost everything is isolated from the chassis. Just wanted to check so I don't mess up anything. Here are the schematics if that helps. http://www.wdox.com/pics/aa151l.jpg http://www.wdox.com/pics/aa151r.jpg Thanks

Anyone here run an active home theater setup? I'm looking at possibly running 4 100 watt bridgeable stereo amps (for mids and highs) and 1 200 watt bridgeable stereo amp (subwoofer) along side an active crossover (behringer or peavey 3way stereo-4 way mono design or something else..?) The end result will probably be a stack of amps hanging in the basement and an infinite baffle subwoofer using the floor as the baffle (I may go ceiling, not sure what will sound better)... I'm not real sure on speakers, I'll be building everything. I'm thinking of making a large "sound bar" center channel with 8 3" woofers and 2 1 1/8" tweeters... I've got some towers from my last passiv…

I've been eyeing a few different tube preamp kits and just wanted to see what you guys think is the best for the money. The Bottlehead Foreplay III has some great reviews, but it is $400. I'd prefer something less expensive and I don't need anything too crazy. Dual RCA outs are a plus and I would love to get my hands on an original Foreplay, but haven't had any luck finding one. I've been reading on DIYAudio.com, but everything is a bit scattered over there. Building from scratch is an option, but tube preamps are a bit new to me and it is tough deciphering "good" plans from the bad ones. Any suggestions are welcome and thanks ahead of time.

I have a set of older Akai home speakers and the 10" subs are gone, the rubber surrounds are gone. I want to improve the sound, but am not looking to spend to the point of buying a complete speaker(box/sub/tweeter etc.). Where can I get replacement 8ohm speakers for them? I've tried looking around on the web, but so far am finding "speakers" meaning the whole speaker box(and speakers with it), I'm just looking to replace the subs. I've tried searches with "home speakers/diy/speakers/etc.... I'm located in Burlington-Oakville Ontario area. PS: I'm not a stereophile by any stretch of the imagination as you can tell, nevertheless would appreciate anyone's help.

I am going to put this here since it somewhat relates. What is everyone using? I will be purchasing one soon ... missing some TV shows/sports games on nights that I stay at work late is not going to cut it anymore, and I do not want a VCR. I have not read into them much. I just want something fairly basic with a small-medium sized HD that is capable of 10+ hours at the very minimum.

  8. This thing is so powerful it's hard to get started, especially since I want out of the ordinary responce, not flat. Since it has 1/120th control I don't know where to start with Q... 60/120? Thats the default IIRC. I basically need to lower everything boosting nothing as I need to create a LP effect. I want 5Hz-10Hz to be 6dB above 11Hz-18Hz. I want 11Hz-18Hz to be 6dB above 19Hz-30Hz. I want 19Hz-30Hz to be 6dB above 31Hz-250Hz. This is all guesstimation, obviousely not a 6dB drop between 1Hz increments... just to give an idea of what I am after. I may simply center at 45Hz and EQ down 24dB and vary my Q until I am happy, unless I get some good feedback. Thank you for tr…

School is starting and I am looking to add a Sub to my BIB's. For amp duty I'm probably going with a Dayton plate amp (180 @ 8ohm and 240 @ 4ohm) Sub duty is another question... I have 2 options for the sub box. Option 1 - Small sealed under the corner table. I would guesstimate ~1.5 cubes net Option 2 - Shallow wide ported enclosure. Can pull out the couch little bit and create quite a bit of space behind it because of the way the wall and couch is designed. Don't have any good measurements but I think 4 cubes would not be a problem, and box can be as wide as a couch. I'm really leaning toward option 1 at the moment. I don't watch many movies so commanding low low end i…

I plan on going 5.1 with my PS3 and a Martantz 7001. For speakers I wanted to go with a couple SDX7s and a pair of FR125S for my first 4 speakers and maybe use a peerless HDS for the Center speaker. For the sub portion I think I am going to go with a tempest-X and a 500 watt Bash amp. Do you guys think it is a good idea to use a full range to pick up at 800 hz and up since I hear that is there the SDX sweet zone is in the 50hz-800hz region. I'm not to sure how I should go about blending the SDX7 into my setup. Opionions? Ideas?

so i haven't been on here for awhile since been i have been extremely busy with my new house, puppies, and building my currect truck but now that summer is coming around it is time to relax, open up the windows and blast some tunes. so here is my question. i have a behringer 2500 for my sub duties in my home theater. i'm looking for a sub or subs that handle music well in a home theater application while sealed. i've tried ported applications in my house and with vaulted and peaked ceilings it makes it way to "peaky" and was not to my liking at all for all kinds of music. so what subs should i look into for a floor firing sealed applcation. size isn't a concern and i'll …

Okay, I have a question. I really don't know how to word this, but I think you guys will understand. Okay, so I saw the thread a couple weeks ago (I think it was JimJ) and he was talking about these really big speakers his friend ordered. There are pictures of it in a garage. He then said it gets painfullly loud with only 7watts....That's whats confusing me. There is something I'm obviously missing here. How does it get so loud with only 7watts? Thanks

Well my goal is to complete a 2.1 channel system for home theater/audio. I currently just finished my build for my Fi Q18. I would post pics if I knew how to do it. But past the point. My next goal is to get rid of my Sony A/V receiver and replace it with quality audio components. And I think I have it down, but I feel like I'm missing something. I need an experts overview. I want an Equalizer, and I guess the ones I have been looking at have a built in crossover in them. How convenient this is the Equalizer/Crossover that I've been looking at http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.c...FTOKEN=50274444 Then I wanted to use one of these amps (haven't decided yet, I will …

I just wanted to post up and see if anyone here is running a projector for HT. I just upgraded to 4k resolution in my theater and love it. I went with the JVC RS4810 and the image is completely mind blowing. Plenty bright on my Carada 126" screen. I've been in H/T for yrs, so I figure I would share my build. My room 14x20, ran on 6 dedicated 20 amp circuits, CAT 6 cable ran to support my 1gb fiber connection. I can stream FLAC files, movies, etc. Speakers I run Polk Audio RTi12s, RTi3s, FXi5s, FXi3s, powered by a D-Sonic Magnum 1000S and Sunfire TGA5400. Subwoofers are dual SVS pb12/plus 2 subs controlled by the Velodyne SMS-1 sub EQ. I'm using the Pioneer SC07 as a pre w…

(Crosspost from the Daber Audio forum) Hey guys, I thought I’d drop a quick line and show you a project I was working on. This is my interpretation of a project I had found online and had found interesting. This is a pretty basic build, nothing too special. All of these pictures are from inside of my house since I needed my amp to make final crossver adjustments if needed. I sold my Thiel CS 2.2's to fund this build. The drivers are: 8” Hi-Vi M8N magnesium/aluminum driver woofer, 3” Dayton dome mid, and Hi-Vi RT-1C planar tweeter. http://www.daberaudio.com/projectimages/back%20of%20drivers.jpg The crossovers are not yet soldered, but you can see the individual boa…

Just finished these for my cousin. They are Murphyblaster Usher 2-ways on top and Tang Band 8" on the bottom. http://murphyblaster.com/content.php?f=usher2way.html Cabinets are built similar to my NCMS Rhythms. 2.25" fronts, 1.5" on other sides, internally braced. Drivers flush mounted. The top half of the inside of the cabinet is coated with a mix of 1/2 premix dry wall compound and 1/2 tacky glue. Cabinets are more than "dead". Outside is covered in black ash laminate. The front baffle is spaced 1/8" to allow painting with a good end for the laminate. Also looks cool if you know much about cabinets, because you can tell how thick the fronts are. . . Here is the …

A friend of mine would like to put together a system that is loud enough to be heard while playing drums. I guess the idea is that he plays while listening to music and he's tired of doing so while wearing headphones. budget: <300 for speakers and amp i'm doubt a small bookshelf system will be capable so i was thinking, with his budget constraints, pro audio gear. his best bet would probably be used gear but would anyone have a new option? he is not very interesting in building the enclosure himself and i live too far away to help him with that.

In the coming month or so, we are going to construct a bar and I am planning on integrating the sound system into the bar. I want to keep as much space as possible underneath so I do not want to construct enclosures within the front of the bar, rather I'd like to have an open baffle type of alignment. The goals are to have it be somewhat efficient and party proof. By party proof I mean I want it to take abuse. I was thinking multiple 6.5" or 8" woofers on ea…
