Just kinda throwing this out there...but for christmas my family is doing a secrete santa deal... with the rules being for the person you pick, you buy them one or multiple gifts that add up to one hundred dollars. I got my older brother this year... and one of the things on his list was a home stereo amplifer for surround sound. Car audio is more my thing, but home stereo stuff... I have nooo clue. Is there anything somewhat decent that I could get him for like $100 or less? If not, he has plenty of other things on his list. Thanks to all who can help me, and an early merry christmas to all!!

Anyone know of a decent home receiver or integrated amp that doesn't mind 4 ohm speakers? I had a Carver CM-1090 but my sister somehow got it. Still trying to figure that one out. She got my CD changer, TV, VCR and speakers, too. Not looking to spend too much and don't mind used.

anybody ever buy a refurbished TV? In particular an LCD? I'm looking to pick up a fairly inexpensive 37" LCD and found some good deals on refurbished ones. They seem to carry full warranties, but this is an investment I want to last for a few years.

  6. I helped my dad land a TC1000 15" when they were on sale, since he is going to only use 1 we went with the SVC version. He got a 300w Bash to power it, and now we need to nail down box parameters. I'm thinking of a box around 9 cubes tuned to 15hz, but I don't know where to place the port? Does it matter? The parameters of the sub are: 15" TC-1000 Qts 0.346 Qes 0.381 Qms 3.82 Fs 15.6Hz Res 3.66Ω Ls 2.64mH Lp 3.58mH Rp 3.16Ω Dia 320mm Vas 393l mms 238g cms 433um/N bl 15.0T*m Spl 87.8dB If you think a 9 cube ported box is the wrong way to go, please let me know what we need to build. This home theatre sub will be used mostly for movies, some music probably 80% HT, 20%…

Well I just finished my Heathkit AA-151. My first tube project. I had a thread going over at ForceAudio with all the progress and pictures but the site is currently down. I'll get some pictures up in a bit. I finished mounting the RCA Jacks today, which was all that was left of this project. Prior to today I have replaced the PS caps, coupling caps, and any electrolytic capacitor. I also changed any out of tolerance resistors, and I eliminated the Xtal Phono input and replaced to according input resistors to make an additional auxiliary input. All the input Rs were also replaced. I was planning to go through and replace all the components in the RIAA Eq with 1-5% …

A little over a year ago a older good audio friend picked up some B&C 12CXB's off eBay. He kept emailing me saying that he really liked these coaxials, and that I'd better jump on a pair before they were gone. I kinda held out for awhile, because folks tend to change their point of view over a period of time with audio gear. He never did, and kept razzing me to get a pair. He finally worked a deal with the seller for a I can't pass it up kind of deal..... We both have listened to the B&C 12CXT, and liked that coaxial, but both prefer the bit more lively sound of the compression tweeter used with the 12CXB. Older ears I suppose. I mounted and experimented with port…

So I was at the local Goodwill, heading straight for the "Electronic section." I always check for speakers, hoping one day I will make an awesome discovery. Well, this day, I spotted a set of interesting speakers. The first thing that I noticed was that they were heavy as crap! They were Grafyx Model 6 speakers I do believe. They looked exactly like these: http://www.oaktreevintage.com/web_photos/Stereo_Speakers/Grafyx_Model_VI_Stereo_Speakers_web.jpg I had never heard of Grafyx before, so I decided to just let them stay and not buy them (I have an old phone, so I couldn't search the interwebs for info). They where in great shape and only $30 for the pair. Did I make the…

Thinking of making a 2.1 system for my dorm. I am going to use an logitech plate amp so im looking at around 200rms for the sub channel. I was looking at the 8 inch Assassin, but i'm not sure if i should go for a 10 inch. What would be a good SQ sub either 8 inch or 10 inch. My main goal is for it to be a clear sounding sub that can get much lower then the stock logitech setup

I have a set of older cabinet speakers with 15" subs. The foam surround has disintegrated for a lack of a better word. I'd like to keep the speakers. The cabinet was made by a friend out of birch many years ago and he did an amazing job with them. Where or how would one go about getting them replaced, and if so, would it be worth the cost and expense. I'd do it myself if it was easy enough. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, I need more bass and was wondering if anyone has tried the "home wrecker" box... Not sure what sub I will be using, probably a cheaper on though, 15" most likely... something like kicker, alpine, Volfenhag, R.F. etc.... I figure no need getting anything too nice because most plate amps i see are only a couple hundred watts so... I am using some Aroura "Bass Shakers" and i frikkin love them but of course there is no real bass from them and my sub that came with the surround sound system just lacks... Any suggestions?, hopefuly "on the cheap"

Figured I would post up some pics of the 2.1 PC stereo I built for my mom about a month ago. Overall they perform real well. I doubt that anything in their price range could come even close to them. The pine baffles and pieces on the subwoofer all match the knotty pine trim that my brother and I milled for my parent's addition.

  17. Hello all, I just thought i would post a few pics of my recently finished infinite baffle project. I picked up 4 IXL 18s from SSA about 6 months ago and just now got around to A) having a house and B) setting everything up. It seemed like i would never get there but now that i have i cant get enough. i had forgotten how great IB sounds. effortless attack and flat to single digits. i couldnt be happier. (well apart from fixing a few rattling ducts ) anyway, thanks to mach5 for making the beastly IXL and to Aaron for allowing me to pick up the drivers and save some shipping money. Also a bunch of thanks to ThomasW for the cult IB site. http://picasaweb.google.com…

So i've had a decent home theater setup for a while now and i'd like to upgrade my sub first then look into new speakers & a reciever and what not if the sub overpowers them (Backwards I know...) I'd like to go with a 15" SSA Icon but i'm not sure about powering it. I don't really have a strict budget but I don't wanna go crazy buying the most expensive thing out there. I just want something that'll give the sub some good clean power. I know a lot of ppl use plate amps but I'm not 100% sure how they hook up... Like do you just connect the sub as you would to a car amp then run a normal indoor subwoofer cable from the amp to the reciever? Or am i just totally clu…

Hey everybody. I went on Madisound and found some Aura 16ohm 3" full range speakers for $1. I've never done an array before but thought this would be a great opportunity to try it out. I've got two different arrays going for a surround sound. The amp Im using to power the new speakers is out of a Logitech X-530. I pulled the speaker boxes apart and took out the speakers to also use with the Aura speakers. The original speakers out of the Logitech system are 8ohm each and are wired in parallel giving a final ohm load of 4ohm. I don't know what the amp puts out in rms or anything but I've hooked up a JL 12" sub to the sub channel and it makes quite a good amount of bass on …

  21. Someone posted up some macro pics of these absolutely beautiful drivers a while back. I think it might have been NDMStang, but I'm not sure. I think they were posted on this forum so that is why I am posting this here. It was a smaller (6"?) driver with a carbon fiber cone and chrome phase plug. I remember reading something about them being produced, but I never saw anythng about them again. Anyone know what I am talking about or have I had too many drinks on Cinco de Mayo?

hey guys... just to let you know i recently took a leap to build an EBS, an 8.8 ft3 sub!, using the mj18 and a rythmik amp plate and it is awesome! i am still playing with it and making a few adjustments to make it sound tighter. the box is large as you can imagine, 42 x 17.5 x 27.25 external dimensions with a port slot of 2.25 x 16 x 29, tuning at 18hz. it sits behind my couch down firing, with my computer table on top. so far, it sounds great but i need to make more adjustment with adding and subtracting fiberglass. placement of my room has been a challenge since my room is so big with 20' ceiling, with a lead to a kitchen. it's a z shape room with no wall for bass…

I've been messing around lately with some 15" Drivers David Moore at PSI has been custom building for me to use for a few of the HT designs I have been implementing. I was using a lot of the Parts Express drivers for a while, the Ultimax and Reference series for custom installs, but the prices were going up and my wholesale discount kept seeming to get smaller and smaller. Anyway, David's drivers work well, sound good and measure decent in 3.5 ft3 boxes. Here are some pics of the last few, I have been getting the ones you can see coated with Line-X and the hidden ones just plain MDF. I have been using between 750 and 1000 watts per driver...
