CLD - turns vibration into heat, ie it helps reduce panel generated noise MLV - Mass Loaded Vinyl -> is a mass barrier. Acoustics can only be stopped by mass. The more mass the better the barrier. MLV needs complete coverage otherwise sound will "leak" around it. It is by far the best mechanism for reducing road noise. Case and point my E34 M5 had MLV over the whole floor. CCF - Closed cell foam: stops buzzing/rubbing and is a good mechanism for decoupling the MLV As for evening things out. For BSR (buzz, squeak, rattle) there is only a need to treat what makes noise. That being said if something does it on one side the likely hood of it starting on the other is higher than the odds of you winning the lottery.

There was a record setting flood that rolled through Ellicott City this past Saturday night, very close to me. The main bar that has been there for nearly an eternity was pretty much destroyed. Yup, sounds about right. The software is accurate enough and you're likely using it correctly, finding a middle road capable of delivering you what you need with compromise in the right places is the key that experience will eventually get you. In a trunk port noise is harder to detect, so you can scrape by with less port area a bit easier if that's the case. Small enclosures are always harder to deal with when it comes to port design because of how much faster exponentially the port length grows as tuning is lowered or port area is increased. You may have to model and build a few different designs to learn for yourself and decide which compromises you can and can't live with.

What is your goal? ie, what are you trying to accomplish? A real measurement mic is $1000. You can surely use the non-calibrated Dayton, but you should also understand the differences and corrections required when using it in different sound fields and depending on your goals that may change what you need completely. If you just want to measure relative 1/24 octaves just use the onboard mic and whatever free ware. Make a change and see the relative difference. Just don't expect absolute values, but in reality absolute values will just cause you to do dumb things if you are measuring for the reasons I think you are...tell us though and I can give you better guidance.
