  1. I don't get it. He has to manually control the throttle, but yet when the blades open, nothing. . . .

Diesel is controlled by fuel only, not throttle valves.

Was working with a new diesel engine at school and the "throttle valve" was their ONLY to reduce shudder when the engine is turned off.

    just my guess

Really? I did not know this. I don't know too much about diesels anyways, but I thought I knew the basics.

Its why it is so easy to get more power out of a Diesel, just dump more fuel in it.

  2. Drinking some Pinot Grigio tonight. :)

don't let a woman pick your wine :P

Oh so true. If she picks she drinks a couple of glasses, instead of the normal she drinks one and I drink the bottle. Its not bad though, easy to drink.

  3. The typical metal coil thermometer are fairly inaccurate and need to be calibrated every so often, I love/prefer digital thermometers.

The typical digital thermometer are fairly inaccurate and need to be calibrated every so often, I love/prefer thermocouples.

Thermocouples are nice. Do they make controllers that have a meat probe, grill temp probe, and air temp probe so it can run it through an algorithm, give estimated cook time, and notify you when it has reached your desired temp?

  4. Got a question for you technically advanced guys.

I am looking for a device to store engine data for a specified amount of time that I can hook a computer to (via 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth, Direct cable, etc..) and pull the engine data off for analysis.

I will most likely be plugging it in to some sort of "off-road" vehicle (e.g. Rubber Tire Loader, Grader, Excavator). One problem I have is that I don't know the diagnostic connections available on these vehicles (if they are even available) but that is actually something I can work around by picking different vehicles if I must.

I'm mostly concerned with finding a product that has the ability to store data that I can tap into every once in a while and pull all the data off. Data I'm looking to collect includes engine revolutions, oil temp, vehicle speed, etc...

    Any ideas?

I would actually give Caterpillar a call, I'm assuming that you are doing this for your grad class/research and see if they have anything that can do such things.

  5. Do any of your guys who spend all day in front of a PC in a cube have any tips on eye and wrist strain. The normal stuff isn't working.

I'm going to buy some grip strength stuff to work that all day, but my wrists are becoming weak not just grip. And my eyes are being a bit goofey lately. I thought about those goofy Gaming glasses but I would feel really dumb. Any yello tinted lens would cut out more blue light and help I suppose, but seriously. I'm slowly falling apart in this cube.

These provide an excellent wrist/forearm workout.

  6. for super huge aplications the sheet metal could just be stamped durring processing to create the dimples. The other factos are maybe the dimples only provide aid at certain speeds. Perhaps after a certain point it's prohibitive thus race teams don't use it. I don't know.

One guess might be is that if it's making all of those voticies perhaps it's creating low pressure there and would then create lift. That would be awefull in any and all practicle aplications.

I think one of the larger reasons is that it is ugly as hell and no one is going to pay extra to save just a little bit of fuel and have an uglier vehicle.

    With the exception of truckers.

  7. Going over to the neighbors for a few drinks. Crazy. The guy is exactly my age, just paid 3.6M for his house and then spent 500k remodelling it. Add 50k in taxes a year and I don't get it, but will let him buy drinks.

Knowing what your neighborhood looks like, doesn't surprise me in the least bit.

    Have an enjoyable evening. :)

  8. West Detroit Metro. Probably am going to pay the $800 to have it shipped though. That comes out of my pocket, but my wife would rather me not leave. Perhaps I'll fly out on a work day anddrive back. I could use some goodies from Chicago and with the blue tooth could actually work the whole day.

I'll just hitchhike up there and drive it back. :)

  9. and for some reason she's all crabby about the exposed studs in the doorway and thinks I should make a real covering for the passthrough instead of a 3/4 oak 4x8.

I told her it's fancy oak but she doesn't think it's acceptable.

My Uncle actually did that. Built his house nearly inside out. ALL of the lumber supporting the house is exposed, but it is also all finished. Not exactly the cheap way to build. :P

That would be pretty damn sweet actually.
