noob entering spl competition.
Good job with the comp. I am a noob at this as well and have been learning from your thread and all the input the old hats are putting in.

XCON is installed.
i understand, its kinda like having a 400 horsepower 454 v8 against a 400 horsepower 4 cylinder, both naturally aspirated. right? even though the liters "displacement" are alot smaller with the 4 cylinder its still making power just like the larger V8

Trunk Battery
DiabolicCustoms replied to ShagggDiesel's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / ElectricalSeriously if you put that regular non sealed batt in the trunk and run it, it will release gases and sulfuric acid out of the caps. that is bad and dangerous. it will eat thru paint carpet anything close to it. plus the gas is noxious. if you going to do it place it in one of those marine battery housing you can get at autozone for like 15 bucks.

But does the old addage there's no replacement for displacement come to play though. 8-10 years ago walking around old whitley shows in ga guys used to say that spl was directly related to cone area? I haven't quite formed a opinion on the matter so i would love to hear some discussion.

Like i stated above Im not posting pics of a square box and a amp mounted just to the floor of the trunk, i am going to finish the box out with trim and paint, make my amp rack and then take pics of the finished product. i have some pics already in my build log for a 2004 mitsubhishi lancer ralliart.

Serious voltage drops
DiabolicCustoms replied to DiabolicCustoms's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / ElectricalThanks, I have the printout from the bench test. Nathan Perricord has never doen me wrong on any of the high output alts i have purchased from him. I guess its time to do some snooping around with the dmm. thanks for all the help. i wish it was a easy answer, like yeah you have your turn signals drawing all the power away from the amp or something. lol.

Serious voltage drops
DiabolicCustoms replied to DiabolicCustoms's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electricalits never failed to start or even hold a charge, never had to jump it. or do you think that under serious load it could be failing but still decent enough to run the car.

Serious voltage drops
Here's what i have Excessive Amperage 180 amp alt. 110 at idle big three plus more doen in 1/0 ga optima yellow 19 feet 1/0 ga to the trunk 5 inches of 1/0 from amp to ground MTX thunder elite 1501d during testing yesterday i found that on the voltmeter mounted in the dash (aftermarket) it would drop down to 12.3 and lower during a romp on the new xcon. i haven't tested at the amp yet but shouldn't the volt meter be a good indication of the drop in the rear? the alt tested out good the last time we had it benchtested by excessive. any clues or ideas?

Well guys and gals, I got the box carpeted ( not finished with looks ) and installed the amp temporary mounted to a spot in the trunk. My box worked out to be 3.6 after all bracing, double baffle, port and sub displacement, tuned at 33.9HZ. My amp is a MTX Thunder Elite 1501D , 1663 watts 1ohm at 14.4 volts. My first inital response was wow this thing sucks! Then I quickly realized that I forgot to turn the subwoofer control on the head unit up. DUH! This thing puts my two alpine type x 12's to bed. I haven't even broke her in yet and she is impressive already. Superb sounding, very clear all thru the frequency range. A little lit on the upper ranges but that could be box and amp issues. Could be the fact that I went from 12's to a 15 also. I didn't bother with pics of the box building as it gets boring seeing a square box with a port being built and I didn't do any special stuff to the box to make it look good in carpet besides running the edges down. Once i get my trim pieces made and painted and my amp rack made and mounted i will post those pics. I do have a question though, What would it take to get in the 140's with this 15, this box is as big as it can get for the trunk, its definately hitting harder than those 12's and sounds way better but im wondering what i could do to get in the 140s, keep in mind i haven't metered yet it just doesn't feel like a 140+ pull.

Fiberglassing the Inside
Hi, I have just decided to not go with glass as its not going to be a solely competing box. NOT that i wouldn't do it for a everyday thing. Its one of those discussions where everyone agrees to disagree i think. My box is nice and sealed up with wood glue and caulking and i have some nice transitional 45's in there. I think that'll do. But if we can get some serious examples or scientific reasoning than by all means lets continue to explore this topic.

MDF enclosure question
Cool thanks I figured as much and I do have a dbl baffle situation which I will be installing thanks for the replies

MDF enclosure question
I have wondered. Is it absolutely neccessary to run 2 pieces of mdf on the part of the enclousure where the subs mount? if you have bracing on the inside of the box wouldn't it be enough to keep the front "plate" from flexing from the subs? Besides being able to recess them whats the advantages of the second piece.

Smoked my Fi Q12
I have whats called artillery ears, its from being next to field artillery as it goes off, even with ear plugs it still doesn't help.

Smoked my Fi Q12
i have only 30 percent hearing in my left ear and my right is probaly not doing better than 80 so the distortion thing is hard for me to hear. what sounds good to me probally sounds like complete poop to others.

Alpine woofer improvements for 2010
I will never buy a head unit that isn't a Alpine, just my stance on things. And the MSRP is very very harsh on the wallet. I paid 400 a piece for the x's.

Alpine woofer improvements for 2010
the box for the type x's was like at the minimal i could go. so i know they weren't going at their best. when metered i only got a 136.8 on a TL on a music at a local show. they were clean all the way to what limit i could put them to. and the XCON is a 15 so I'm hoping that I can get more force out of it. Teh X's would get low and rumble but the one ICON in a box i heard and felt at a show was almost twice what those x's were doing. but yes I will definately post up and let ya'll know what i think.

Smoked my Fi Q12
FI has answered your questions, everyone who chimed in answer your questions, if we thought fixmyspeaker was the answer we would have said go to fixmyspeaker. and i don't completely see why setting you gains with a dmm is possibly the worst thing you could have done. if you don't have a o-scope and you aren't good with your hearing like me, what is another alternative? sorry for whoring your thread by the way.

Alpine woofer improvements for 2010
I had 2 Type X 12's in the wifes car. They were a phenomanol sounding sub. Clear and and somewhat powerful. Definately a sq sub. I'm hoping that the Xcon we are about to install is twice that from all the reveiws I have read.
