  1. Now that is the truth. If it's a box set I want to buy, I will get it on vinyl. Anything else, I'll just download the FLAC.
  2. You're telling me. The other ISP here has uncapped service at 7mbps (1.5 mbps faster than what I have right now) but this isn't available in conjunction with any of their other services...and if you don't buy their other services, the 7mbps connection is way overpriced, leaving me to choose uncapped at 1.5mbps or capped at 5.5mbps. But, this is why I rent a seedbox periodically.
  3. seedbox? It is basically a dedicated server used strictly for "seeding" torrents. At home, my bandwidth is limited to 70GB per month and I constantly exceed that....so the use of a seedbox allows me to seed torrents 24/7 at 100mbps and boost my upload stats (and thus my ratio) on the various torrent sites I use. As an example, I had a seedbox going for a couple months back when I shared LEAP with everyone. In 2 months, I uploaded around 4TB and downloaded about 500GB across various sites.
  4. Yes. This is a TQWT (Tuned Quarter-Wavelength Tube) design that Terry Cain developed after reading the Fostex Craft Handbooks which were widely available in Japan and very hard to find here. If I remember the backstory correctly, apparently the Japanese have a fairly engrained knowledge of speakers...even being able to learn acoustics in lower-level education facilities. edit: As always, James Melhuish's site comes through. And yes, if simulation is your game, you simply must get MJK's MathCAD sheets. Martin is also kind enough to explain the derivation of the formulas used and how to do the simulations. Don't be afraid to jump in.
  5. Just ordered my server from Vectoral. 2000GB bandwidth, 80GB HDD, 100mbps up/down. Perfect for stealing the interwebz.
  6. Something like this?
  7. Either Vectoral or LayeredTech, I think.
  8. yeah but this is probably one of the dumbest things I've seen g00b do. Totally dumb on his part. I guess he'll have to deal with that, though....or he'll just leave things alone for another 3-4 months and not care.
  9. Boring day at work today. Well, not just today. Can't wait till the Winter semester.
  10. CA.com is CA.com, as always.
  11. Looking for a new seedbox today....been too long without one. Should make for a fun evening.
  12. Have to be huge to get any bass as that is not really the focus of a PA driver. 50-15 at best, as we say here.
  13. Oh, and no one needs to worry about where the drivers are made. There are enough buildhouses that are capable of doing XBL^2 drivers (it's really just a little extra machining) and capable of doing them very well. From what the other XBL^2 guys have told me, Dan has made some very good connections with a number of different buildhouses. Sorry if I missed it....copper in the rebate, on the pole, or none?
  14. It comes from misinterpretation. You take 30mm of linear stroke on a low Fs driver, throw on 1-2kW in a ported enclosure tuned to 30 Hz or lower and you get a low end mammoth....with a top end that sounds limited by comparison. The beauty of the high stroke XBL^2 drivers is that you can cram them in small enclosures and have nice even response for several octaves...the Brahma was a perfect example of this, if integrated well. They got a bit of a bad rap for no real reason. Like every driver (XBL^2 or not) the enclosure has to suit the driver appropriately...I mean, it's a filter right in the middle of your bandwidth! I am very interested in the new Mag. Can't wait to see more and would love to hear more about this composite cone. Very intriguing.
  15. Loud and cheap. If they look cool and not homemade that would help as well. Words outta my mouth.
  16. Jesus, I need to spell check before posting rather than editing it afterwards.
  17. Here too. Have had to plug in the truck the past few days overnight. It's not like it helps the piece of shit GM product. Tell me about it.
  18. I remember from when you were posting pictures. The end of the sentence is great. I know it sounds so awful but if you saw the part selection and build quality on it, you'd think the same thing. I wanted to listen to it and do a review but a) I didn't have the time, b ) I wasn't impressed, c) I don't think a review would have even mattered...the people who like RD Audio will like them no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary, and the people who dislike them (like me) will always be considered "haters", whatever the hell that means.
  19. Even in the internet world where part selection is almost identical from one sub to another and build quality is often pretty average, RD Audio falls well beneath the water mark. The Classic I bought was a disappointment in virtually every respect....just wish I had listened to it before selling.
  20. Who is this Deephaven character? I like the way they think.
  21. Thanks Neil, I will be interested! edited by Sean
  22. Getting cold up here again. "Feels like" -40 Celsius/-40 Fahrenheit.
  23. ? http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs_pages.php?page_id=42 Dynamic Motor Analysis is a real thing. Not only do they FEA their drivers and simulate BL(x), Cms(x), and Le(x) curves, but they also have a Klippel on hand that can physically measure (more or less) the same thing. Much more than just your static small signal thiele/small parameter analysis (Dynamic vs. Static). Honestly, if it's from JL Audio, you can almost always bet real, viable, and impressive engineering is behind it. A lot of manufacturers do that however. Very true, although not always in house. It's amazing how many companies use FEA....even on at, say, Boeing, FEA is used very extensively in the design of the entire airplane.
  24. Agnostic doesn't have to be a cop-out, though. I spend a lot of time studying theism and atheism alike, although my end result is always agnosticism.
