It's a fine beginner crossover. Personally, I wouldn't use a passive without a Zobel or impedance compensation network and this design appears to have neither although the tweeter appears to be padded down, which is good.

Nothing wrong with horns up front. You'll find two challenges, though: 1. Making them aesthetically pleasing. 2. Finding a mid that can keep up with your horns. In general, the compression driver is very efficient and the horn only exaggerates this, so you'll need quite a mid to go with it.

In all due fairness... The poster started a thread and said "this is SQ" and then posted pictures of several Tru amps and IDMAX subs; no front stage at all. What the owner of the vehicle may or may not have up front is important, but that has nothing to do with my point.

Yeah, DIYMA is kind of cliquey sometimes. Then again, we're a bit the same over here. For some reason, the Southpark episode about the aliens taking their jobs comes to mind. I want to try my hand at one of the BVR designs that for the FR125 (Harvey or Mikasa) but don't have the patience for that much wood work right now. Do you recall what parts cost is on that amplifier?

Looks more like "This is money." Don't mean to down it, but I have found IDMAX to be above average but not great, TRU seems to have earned their reputation by charging a lot of money and not making anything stellar, and that much bass output means nothing if the other stuff don't keep up.

You should get hold of the schematics and maybe we can looking at building a few if FR is worthwhile.

Sounds good. I read your posts as an indication that you are going to be quite involved in the audio world on a continual basis, which is great. There is a forum right around the corner that you will be wanted at.

The FR's are really good for full range response with a good bottom end in a small enclosure (0.25 cubic foot bass-reflex works fine...see their EL1 kit). That's the beauty of a 4.5" driver with 6mm of Xmax. If you go with a horn (look for the PAWO horn...I use a slightly modified version of it currently) you can get a lot of low end oomph. As far as it's full range capabilites, it is probably the best full range driver I've heard. Detail is a little lost on the top end but I'd say that's the case for any single full range driver without a whizzer cone...and I don't particularly care for whizzer cones. I don't know of many for around 50W per channel. I personally imagine that the parts might make it fun but cost prohibitive...but then again, I've never built a full amplifier before. If you do go the full range route and put it in a horn, you can get very respectable output with less than 10W, and there's lots of those designs around. DIYAudio.com is a good route to go there. It is likely that I will be a "representative" of sorts for CSS on the side in addition to SSA...not really in an aggressive stance but just helping those who are interested in their stuff. If you are interested, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

This is something I'll try to expand on in the morning, but if you have a lowpass filter in place with an f3 lower than the f3 created by the inductance of the coil, then the dominant factor is the enclosure, which is really just a highpass filter. Interesting additional note here: the mass of a speaker is also, in effect, a highpass filter. So yes, it is very relevant because frequency response and transient response are utterly and completely related. In short, Dan describes the effects that inductance has on a speaker quite well, but it is a tad misleading.

Hi Kelvin, I'm afraid it doesn't quite work like that. Each individual port, being of different lengths, will behave as a Helmholtz resonator at different frequencies. It is not the approach you would really want to take, in my opinion. Have you considered building a slot port? Cross-sectional area is easily achieved and you can easily construct a long port by utilizing 90 degree bends or "L" ports.

Power on tap? 2.5-3 cubes sealed or 4 cubes tuned to 28-32 Hz.

I actually enjoyed the movie, multiple times no less. but of course maybe that comes with being low-down & dirty Oh, I have watched the movie 4 or 5 times now. It really rides a fine line between so dumb it's awesome and so dumb it's just awful. But I can't say I'm surprised it didn't get a lot of mainstream approval.
