  1. Taking longer than I anticipated. I'm working on the SPL-12 right now and will move onto the IXL. I anticipate 3.5 - 4 cubes but will let you know for certain once I listen to it.
  2. Heh, like you need another sub... I call fixed!
  3. You can certainly go with a larger sized sealed enclosure if space allows. Don't be shy by going as high as 30% larger. It all comes down to how easy a box that big is on the eyes though. Best, Mark
  4. This build log will hopefully provide enough information to those folks who are interested in the SPL-12 for high volume car audio use. The criteria consists of: - Mach 5 SPL-12 wired for 4 Ohm use - 3.8 cubic foot bass reflex enclosure tuned to 46Hz - 2001 Pontiac Bonneville - Crest CPX-3.0 PA amp providing 3000 watts power into 4 Ohms - CD source with all necessary test tones - TermLab ****************************************************** Here starts the frankenbox Frankenbox meet frankendriver Box inside trunk Details Box tuning turned out lower than expected as the impedance measurement shows below. The port tuning ended up being 40Hz and not my expected 46Hz. For interpretation, the dip between the two humps is the box tuning. The lower hump is the peak of the port and the upper hump is the peak of the driver in the box. Happy and Disappointed I knew the Bonneville wouldn't produce stellar results as it's a highly damped environment to begin with and separation between trunk and cabin is above average. I chose a frequency of 42Hz to burp as that was the highest output frequency in my test sweep. I took three sweeps which obtained 139.9db at the highest peak. During the first two burps my Crest power amp kicked out and during the third, the breaker to the garage blew. It was at that point I knew I wouldn't get anymore out of my current setup. The amplifier output peaked at 108 volts AC to produce the highest volume level. So overall, I was disappointed that my system could not produce more output, but I was happy that the driver took the power with ease, and seemed like it was looking for more. If I had an extra 2000 watts I would not have hesitated to use it on this driver. After the tests, I played a couple of songs from the DB Drag CD to see how the sound quality was. What came to mind immediately was the bass being very solid and tight. I noticed no overhang whatsoever. The bass actually left me feeling excited as I listened to it, if that means anything to you. Needless to say, I found myself turning the volume higher and higher, only to trip the power amp again. It certainly won't win any SQ competitions, but what I heard, I liked. I can only conclude (in my own biased way) that this driver will perform quite well for a daily, but make sure to have an ample supply of power as you will need it. For the pros, I leave it to you to decide whether the SPL-12 would work in your setup. I see myself using one in my car.. Best, Mark
  5. I agree, and no disrespect intended here, but check the obvious. Coil wiring, terminal wiring, power to the amp, etc. You mention that some songs slam and others don't. Verify you have steady power and everything is clamped down real good. If you can reverse the phase on the amp, try that to see if its a phase issue.
  6. I should have some answers for you this weekend. m

I couldn't read this thread properly on account of the homemade Birch tree sunglasses I have on. The blubber is almost done and I don't want it to burn because it has a fishy taste to it then. I don't have too much time right now - the woman is giving birth to another baby in the igloo and I am almost done making the papoose. WooHoo! Another family allowance cheque on the way! I thank Louis Riel for bingo and slot machines! Long live First Nations! AY!!!!
  8. Been a long day... IXL-15.2.2 and SPL-12 specs are now up on the website for those who are mildly curious. Thanks for being patient. m
  9. I'm exercising the suspension(s) right now. Mmmm.... The smell of burning excess glue... In all honesty, I had no idea where this would go, but for poops a giggles I did get a 15" proto done up. We shall see what it is capable of. m
  10. Folks in the pre-order will probably receive the subs before I am able to post the specs. Guys, please bear with me as I get this stuff done...
  11. Yup. Given how the protos were shipped, it was the only option. Paid extra for custom foam molding as well..
  12. While catching my breath from lugging a pile of boxes around, I thought I'd crack one open: Back to work now..
  13. Just thought I would post a random thread about the shipment of SPL-12's that arrived on Friday. I will be receiving delivery tomorrow and updating the website in the coming days. Those who have pre-ordered, please shoot me an Email - [email protected] Also in the bunch are the IXL-15's. I'll be posting info on those in the coming days as well. Best, Mark
  14. Listening to M5's system in his truck a week or two ago, it sounded quite "dead". No vibes that I could sense anywhere...
  15. Glad to hear you're liking them. I usually recommend ~30 hours break-in time but YMMV.
  16. Just make sure you guys flush twice, we need the extra water
  17. That's true, but it doesn't come close to the 200,000 lakes Manitoba and Saskatchewan have..
  18. So I was in MN/WI this last weekend. I must say it is beautiful country out that way..
  19. Ah. Thanks.
  20. What is "lossless"?
  21. I guess you guys are aiming more at tunes than anything. When I go ARRR! hunting its usually for movies, but Miriam pulls down the odd song or two..
  22. Just read the blurb on OiNK... and understand now..
