Input on 8's
Actually, it has been done years ago - when consumers began to get tired of big boxes with big woofers in their livingrooms. Companies began to downsize their products; producing speakers with smaller woofers that fit in small enclosures which could dig deep. The first real breakthrough believe it or not, was the Energy 22. In 1981 it set the record for deep 'subwoofer-like' bass from a modest 7" woofer in a bookshelf sized enclosure. Nothing could beat it at the time. Magazine reviewers and store owners were comparing them to products 3 times their size and up to 8 times their price. The 22 woofer was good to over 2kHz and produced very good midrange. Yet it could dig so deep you would think you were listening to a sub. So, all a person has to do is go backwards in time to recoup that 'lost science' that seems to be missing today.. Best, Mark

Ok good. At least you've decided on a box size and a driver. Shheezzz... Don't worry too much about the driver displacement. Too much emphasis is placed on this for no reason. Do you really think you will be able to tell the difference between a 4.314cu. ft. box and a 4.5cu. ft. box. I don't think so... Take that poly fill and stuff it... handfuls of it, don't worry about stapling it down. Keep it away from the port area of course, but stuff it nice and tight. Right up to the back of the driver. Then listen to it...

Where did all these fancy smilies come from? Jeremiah, you've been struggling with this for at least a couple of months now. Just buy the damn driver already - be done with it. Build yourself one box and see how it sounds to you. If it shakes the ground you stand on, you're home. If you don't like it, build a different one. What's the most it will cost you? $20? C'mon man, quit living inside the box modeling programs. Take back your life... Best, Mark

If you want to go ported, I would suggest a minimum of 4.5 cubes. If you cannot achieve that internal volume and still desire a ported config, use plenty of stuffing (fibreglass) to help absorb the backwave. Going ported will provide you with more output, but as the others have said, it will not be quite as articulate as if you went sealed. Best, Mark

Post your results - good or bad.

She likes them actually. They blend in well and aren't an eyesore when you walk in. We talked about getting a coloured grille cloth for them but now see says no, saying she likes the look of the ribbons. I'll swap out that tweeter like we talked about and let you know the result.

Do it... I just got them together so I'm still fiddling with it. I'm using a DCX but will build a passive version when I get time to do so. Right now its ~2.4khz 18db/oct. The HiVi's sound sweet, detailed and airy - just like a ribbon should. Do it even if you don't have pillars... Best, Mark

I'll put everyone's mind at ease. They sound good.

IXL 18.4 HT sub
Another option for ports is to use Sonotube - very cheap and easy to get.

Here's the first round of Gio's MTM using the HiVi tweeter. Despite the high rise, Gio said it is quite pleasing to the ear.

Input on 8's
Hmm.. interesting feedback thus far. Ok, lets look at this from different perspectives. Depth: What would be an adequate depth that folks can live with? Frequency Extension: Might not be too difficult, but will take some tweaking. The MJ can go beyond 1k already and sound not bad.. for an 18.. Technology: The XLS is a beautiful line, as are the Aura's. Them suckers are expensive tho. Are folks prepared to pay a premium price for another boutique brand? Specs: Small VAS sounds like the bottom line here.. Thanks guys. If you can tink of other things, don't hesitate to share... Best, Mark

Input on 8's
Alright, Aaron has pushed me to start looking into this... I would like to hear your input on what it is you would like to see in an 8" size. There are so many brands to chose from nowadays, from big-box companies to boutique 'internet-only' proprietorships. Some really good, some not so good. What is it about the 8" you purchased that made you decide to get it? Best, Mark

This much is true. You wouldn't lose your shirt if you plan to sell it as well...

How long before SPL model?
Well, jumping from a 10" to a 12" will certainly provide you with more air movement and will be louder given the same efficiency. Regarding the TC-1000, it looks like a nice driver, but you can get three MAW-12's for the price of one of those. The SPL driver is a ways away, so if you are looking to purchase soon, go with the TC. Best, Mark
