Thanks for your time, Anton Miller ---------- its a very nice sub! i wouldnt want to go over 900 watts for too long on music, i had it going at 1300 watts for a while there and the coils got a little stinky, but nothing too bad... plus thing box is f'n huge for this sub, just a good comparison vrs a BTL. 7. Same copper coil that has been in the subs since their introduction. This test was done in December 2010 with all the newer motor / spacer updates.
  8. Sundown SA-12 Review - DIY Mobile Audio "I have had this sub for a few days now and am finally getting a chance to really give it a good listening to, mainly on my commute to and from work and this evening i finally had some time to just sit in the car and play some random tracks. The car is a 2008 Scion xB, the sub is in the rear cargo area in a 2cu ft ported enclosure tuned to 29hz (I will be updating my build thread with that info as well) Sub is on the drivers side facing the hatch port is on the passenger side facing the wall which was recommended to me and works VERY well. Build quality is outstanding, great fit and finish on all parts. Nice thick paper cone, stiff high roll foam surround, woven and tied down leads the list goes on and on, Jacob really scored on this driver. Here is a shot of the driver in the car. (pardon my dust i was short on time) So on to listening impressions. The details : sub is wired to 2 ohms off of a Sundown SAZ-1000D which is rated for 600 @ 2. Perfect Match. Right now the sub is crossed over at 80 hz and sub sonic is set to 25. I don't really listen to a lot of rap or test tone music so the ssf is more or less a fail safe just in case. Quick impression: The SA-12 is a GREAT sub, even at 80hz it is very easy to blend with my front stage and does not get boomy or sloppy. The transient attack is very fast. The impact is awesome when you start to put the boots to it, it has been a very long time since i have seen movement from my winshield wipers with music playing BUT it is NOT an SPL sub only! The SQ of the driver has been stellar so far, extremely musical, very quick, and can easily go from a nice subtle sq sub to a cut right through you sub on demand. And it retains it's composure very well at high volumes, I honestly have NO issues with this driver so far. My musical tastes are far from average and span a wide spectrum so i will list the tracks i have really paid attention to so far and will add more over the next few days. Sublime: What I Got (reprise)- I have always loved the bass line in this version of the song, the high and low transitions are reproduced very well with the SA-12, very effortless, tight and with great tonality. Jonny Lang: Lie To Me- Absolutely outstanding impact on this song, the kick drum comes through with a hard hit and great sound, the paper cone really sounds awesome on drums, it is a sound I have missed and without doubt have regained Lee Rocker: I'll Cry Instead- The driver really reproduced a lot of details i have been missing with the stand up bass in this song. Nice attack on the slappy bass line and the notes are heard individually, not just mushing together staying clean and sharp along with the drums, never faltering a bit. Eagles: Hotel California (live)- Pretty much a must play with any sub test in my opinion, and i was able to take it from a nice tonal blended sub to an absolute beast hitting me in the chest with this track, while continuing to play both drums and bass individually at all volumes, neither one overpowering the other. Boxenkiller - My favorite drum and bass track to play around with. Another track that i was really able to bring the beast out with and still keep the bass guitar nice and defined tonally. Drum rolls, kicks and bass guitar were all reproduced to some very high levels while not ever approaching boomy or distorted sound. Bob Marley: Turn Your Lights Down Low (remix)- This is the version from the Chant Down Babylon album. Drum machine and synth bass that can get nice and low and fun to play with and also some fun little transitions here and there. Reproduced very well although in my opinion the recording could have been better, the sub showed that it really likes to dig deep and stay clean. Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Flying Saucer Dudes- The sub fell in love with this track! The drums are sort of all over the place going deep and back to regular, bass line everywhere. Overall a fun track to listen to made even more fun with the driver that this is, Stevie Wonder: Superstition- A truly classic song with a fun and rhythmic bass line that the SA-12 is able to reproduce flawlessly. Each note discernable from the last and never stumbles. Stevie Wonder: Ribbon In The Sky- Had to play this one for my girl, her absolute favorite song in the world and the SA-12 plays the stand up bass line with the subtlety that was intended, very well defined and you can feel the notes as they are played without mushing up the mix. This is one where the sub really amazed me in its ability to play music. Tool: Sober - Outstanding attack! I could feel every rake of the bass strings throughout the song. The Outlaws: Green Grass & High Tides- Very typical southern rock bass line. Fast attack throughout the frequency range reproduced effortlessly staying clean high, low and everywhere in between and hearing each note clearly. A fun listen. Overall I am 100% satisfied with this sub (FINALLY found one i like) and i have yet to find anything negative to say. I do not hear any motor noise from it and it does what i want when i want it to. There will be more tracks listed and impressions given as the days pass, and if any of you have some favorites then throw them out and i will do what i can to give it a listen. I also hope to be able to gather a few members from here very soon so they can give it a test as well but this sub is definitely a winner in my book."
  9. We did an updated one today with an SA-15 never dropping power under 700 watts and even increasing to close to 1000 watts near the end : "My clamp meters weren't set quite right up until about 1:45 and we come online reading power at 838 watts (remember we have been seeing power for a while already this is just where I get a good reading)... at 2:45 dropped to 754, at 3:45 dropped to 725, at 4:45 dropped to 722, and at 5:45 dropped to 709 -- so here we are at about 40% over rated power on a sine wave with only 15% power drop over 4 solid minutes. We decide that the driver hasn't been strained yet so crank it up to 790 again at 6:01 then again to 851 at 6:20 then again all the way to 970 at 6:36 and we let it go for 30 seconds until 7:05 when we shut it off to cut the sub down NOT BLOWN. Over 5 minutes of sine wave torture... coil is dark but not blown. Not many drivers in this category would stand up to this test." We have about a minute and a half before I get a good reading at 838 watts... power was in the 500-600 watt range for that time period. Counting this time period we did around 7 minutes total power on the driver. Coil was only darkened once we cranked it up to the 900+ mark well into the test... practically no coil smell until that point. So... essentially you have to batter the driver constantly with 20-50% over rated power on a constant sine wave for 5-7 minutes to darken the coil... not even actually causing thermal failure. Put some thought to that on what an equivalent amount of thermal stress would be on music... especially with the driver moving. I got in real close in the video so you can really see how LITTLE the driver is moving.

  11. That is due to the dual spaced spider -- one spider is glued to the basket, then there is a custom tooled ring, then a spider on top of that, then a steel bolt-on ring on top of the whole assembly. Actually fairly complex but gives us more lateral coil stability!
  12. No -- I plan to keep the SA-10/12/15 pretty much as they are for some time. The lines above the SA will have their own basket tooled up at some point... I have a ton of renderings completed for the new frames (nothing public yet) in 10s, 12s, and 15s. They are a bit too expensive for the SA line but will be used on all our bigger stuff when completed.
  13. No it's not -- we used a similar motor structure on a prototype SA-8 recently but this is the first time this motor will be used on production. It looks somewhat like the SD-2 motor due to the shape of the back and top plates, but is it's own unique structure.
  14. It will be on it's way to me soon for testing of performance and final specs... also production costs should come in soon so I'll be able to get a cost to customer price shortly  On to the photos of it all put together !
  15. So far: 3790 watts @ 152.6 dB with new box. At the moment it won't support more power (two small SP1000 12v batteries and stock alternator) -- I may drop my 16v batteries in tomorrow.
  16. Car Audio Classifieds -- Part I of this project from April 2010. Continued from last year... since we proved the prior box worked so well even made from super low grade plywood we finally got around to making one from genuine Russian 13-ply birch plywood. Derrick was up for some testing yesterday and was able to stay up here to work on this box for me today -- on to the pictures : * Back wall cut -- have some weight on the port to hold the glue down for a bit as it will be permanently attached from the inside. * High strength 3M Epoxy glue to hold it in.
  17. Just in last night -- soft parts and spacers are done !!! * Our surround tooling was modified a bit for the wider surround landing on our new frame. More glue surface area to the frame! * Custom gasket with our logo to fit our new frame. * Modified magnet boot to fit the revised motor structure * Venting spacer like the big brother SA-10/12/15 * Custom tooled ring for our spaced spider setup (notice through bolt holes for the steel bolt-on ring) * New custom tooled spider - 10mm wider than before! With DUAL round leads -- we mean business! ----- Prototypes should be done next week... then we'll have them early next month. Once the prototypes are built up we can get an idea of the final cost on these guys.
  18. ~1000 should be pretty safe on them.
  19. Indeed -- the 4th order I made for some SA-8s used 0.25 sealed each
  20. Congrats to Jon Kennedy for winning IASCA Southeast Regionals SQ in the PRO class with a pair of SA-8s -- he is a part of Team First Amendment. He also won a Bass Boxing challenge presented by Team Epsilon/PPI against Chad Romano -- a friendly challenge, of course! They plan to continue the friendly challenge at SBN this year  Jon runs PPI amplifiers and an old school Boston 3-way set. I am going to get some more details from him on the actual bass boxing scores and the install but for now I'll share the photos I have -- the box is a 4th order that fits under his truck seats.
  21. Yes, NS v.2 + cost of the copper sleeve.
  22. Ours are a standard phone cord -- if the other amp is as well then it's fine.
  23. I've been driving around with the first prototype for some time now and I really do enjoy it quite a bit -- I haven't made one with the "beefier" coil yet but I believe that it will really perfect the sub and will likely be what I offer when these go up for sale... once I get a moment to work on my own stuff again I'll build one with the other coil to test. I intend to make these publicly available for sale once the next run of NS v.2 motors arrives.
  24. The solder or the terminals may have an issue right at the terminal -- test on the tinsel leads directly.
