  1. I do not know if it will be made so I have not estimated pricing. Nor do I know if the design is even done -- just sharing photos of stuff I'm working on at this point.
  2. Sample is here -- needs more work before testing is to begin -- but here are some pictures next to an SA-8 : I may have to make the motor a LITTLE smaller too -- it's a huge battle to mount it with speaker wires *laughs*
  3. It is broken - someone hooked it up backwards.
  4. If it's still on the list I still have it. I will mark items as sold when they are sold/
  5. I am going to revise my suggestions a bit... honestly 0.5 - 0.7 should be used for pretty much ANY power level. Based on more real world testing with customers -- a heavily abused SA-8 can mechanically damage itself in the larger boxes even on lower power.
  6. For the most part Team membership is for SPL competitors - with a few exceptions for large builds that don't necessarily hit the lanes. Although, 90% of the emails I get for Team membership include zero SPL experience.
  7. I know it's way early, but have you set any price on these and have any specs for enclosure size been tested? I assume they will come in D2 & D4 configurations. Boxes similar to the Nightshades... so about 3 cubes ported. Could go a bit smaller if needed - to 2.5 to 2.75 I haven't set pricing yet.
  8. 15s should debut around years end.
  9. Okay guys... ran through a TON this morning and I have less than 10 not replied to. So almost everyone should be taken care of. I am delegating some emails to Brandon for responses so don't be shocked if you hear back from him and not me Thanks for your patience everyone!
  10. Funny thing... coils aren't totally destroyed, just really black. Did not completely unwind yet. The one on the right started to come unwound a little at the top -- both coils still read but read lower than they should (shorted windings). The one on the left still reads normally on both coils ! The former got so hot it bubbled out - this is why they locked up at the end of the video. We hadn't quite reached total coil melt-down yet - but we had exceeded what the former will handle !
  11. It's not an amp - that is why We put the guts of a 1500-watt light dimmer inside that case and used the terminals as connections for it. This way we can adjust the power coming from the wall socket to the woofer.
  12. We got bored a few minutes after close and decided we were going to smoke a pair of mechanically damaged SA-8s -- well it turned out to be harder than we suspected to thermal these little guys... even the 2" coil SA-8 was able to out-last the Type-R 12" that we tested - I am pretty satisfied with that. Video comment : "Comes online at 69v/9.5A=655 watts so 325 each... crank it up a bit and land at 81.5v/10.5A=855 watts so ~427 each. All the way down at 3 minutes we are still at 82.6v/9.16A=756 watts... we keep playing nice until 5 full minutes elapsed at right around rated power levels then crank it up all the way to 115v/12.5A=1437 watts or 718 each !!! Then continued to play for ANOTHER 2 minutes or so at this power level before smoking the coil." Not too shabby for subs rated 400 RMS each... especially keeping in mind that at 60 Hz there is very little excursion so coil cooling is nowhere near optimal. On music with higher excursion the coils will cool even better. So remember... SA-8s are MECHANICALLY limited... chances are you will not smell them or hurt the coil, ever. So don't do the "smell test" to see if you have too much power -- watch the level of excursion and listen for mechanical distortion! Pardon the opening remarks *laughs* Brandon didn't let me finish introducing the video.
  13. Was caught up for a short time but they are backing up again - have been pulled away to build alot of subs recently... Nightshade v.2 orders are coming in quick. In any event - be patient if you have emailed me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ0eZj82gI0 Here we are cutting up the Type-R.
  15. Once I finalize a few tweaks to the thermal design of the SA series I will begin production... so within a month I think.
  16. So it's not a total waste I took some pictures of the Type-R after we blew it... Brandon took the hammer to it before I got many "before" pictures *laughs* It is worth nothing that you cannot remote the Type-R motor from the frame as far as we could tell. * Around the edges you can see where air vents to the outside in the slits between the top plate. * The special curve on the pole flattens BL * One piece frame / shorting ring assembly... the magnet was busted out to see this... magnet is multiple V shaped pieces.
  17. Well here it is... I was very sad that it didn't last longer thermally : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os4TZTpLNSI "Done to compare with SA-12 results... we dialed in power as close as we could but the Type-R didn't last long. Few samples of actual power applied : 28 seconds = 497 watts / 51 seconds = 667 watts / 1 minute 18 seconds = 717 watts -- woofer didn't last much longer when exposed to a hair over 700 watts. Conclusion... SA-12 coil cooling is more effective."
  18. I'm not planning to test other brand subs at the moment... but I was interested in the Type-R for my own information as I was actually pretty impressed with the design behind it. Still am impressed with the way Alpine worked a one piece frame / shorting ring into it... split magnets are cool too... as is the nice BL curve. But I was let down that it wasn't stronger thermally.
  19. A bit saddened... the brand new Alpine Type-R failed after about 1.5 minutes of the same testing (as close as we could get it anyway). I'll put the videos up after lunch for that.
  20. This is the voltage adjustment rig - Brandon's custom creation
  21. Testing to see how well it keeps the coil temperature down by seeing how much power compression we get. Quoted from video : "Testing our new "woofer power test" rig... we have an adjustable voltage knob on the wall socket to get the power level we want. For the first 2 minutes or so we are trying to read on the "power" setting on the clamp but it didn't want to cooperate so I changed over to simply amperage and voltage afterward. At 2:20 we have 11.64A/61.6V for 717 watts... after a full 4 minutes and 45 seconds at 7:05we still have 11.19A so the sub is still seeing 689 watts. So we are seeing VERY little power compression even above rated power on a pure 60 Hz sine wave after 7 full minutes -- which is not even taking advantage of the air cooling as much as a lower frequency." I'll use this data to examine how my upcoming tweaks to the cooling system work. Pretty boring video... but I figured people would get mad if I edited it in any way
  22. So... how many people want 15s ?!
  23. Glad I can help.
