  1. This. I tried doing exactly what you are trying to do. It worked ok at low power but at higher volume even with the port about 6" from the sub I had unloading issues and lost cone control. I think a passive radiator might work for your application. Plus you can often tune it to different frequencies to find what you like best and displace minimal volume. I redesigned and it sounded much better. Not everything is a win lol
  2. We'll be there for Saturday. I guess I need a speed pass to park with the club?
  3. Wow that turned out great! Damn nice for your first go at it. I wish I had that shop space. Didnt realize you had that much room to work. 70% of what I do is in my living room lol. I have a garage but not much space to work since the supra is in a 1012 pieces. I do have the same bosch router though. Love it!
  4. Awewome! You must be excited. You have double posted everything all week lol
  5. Have you considered a passive radiator instead of ported? I would rather have a sub more suited to sealed than sticking in yet another sub that isn't.
  6. I wasnt trying to be a prick. Its just how I took what you said. Then contradicted that talking about how yours is tuned at 39hz. You didnt state if it was a bandpass or not. For a bandpass thats tuned real low.
  7. Thanks guys! Someone was asking so I thought id explain if it was a little unclear. The last set of 3 numbers was averaging on music bass boxing style using songs that peaked at the frequency I listed. It wasnt peak hold "burping" with music.
  8. Assuming you are talking about a 4th order bandpass that youd tuned to 39hz you think mid 20s ported is dumb? Besides that yeah not much music drops that low but most people that tune that low only care about the low end. And as such mostly only listen to music in that range modded or otherwise and are willing to give up output at the higher end.
  9. Are you talking about a solder pot or a mini torch? I use a bottle of map gas and a nozzle from AutoZone. I think it was around $30 or so. You need some serious heat to solder that big of a terminal. Or you could use a swedge or hydraulic crimper. Also if you use shrink tube be sure you slide it far away from where you solder or the heat will shrink it before you slide it up.
  10. Solder kit as in an iron/gun? If so that wont cut it. As far as solder the size of the wire doesn't matter really. What I do is pull out a big run off the spool then fold it lengthwise in half then half again etc. I find that roughly pencil size works well. You dont want to use too small because you have to hold heat on it too long. Too big and its harder to control and get it where you want it to feed. Just dont use some goofy plumbing solder. I like Kester 44 and Multicore.
  11. Just created a box account. Thanks for the suggestion. I just pm'd chop and swift the info. Let me know what you think.
  12. Thanks guys! I was most happy about how the low 30's high 20's weren't far off from the mid to high 40's. I guess I did well planning the enclosure since that was what the goal was. For future I'd like to have the same response so hope it goes as well and it wasn't just luck. I may play around with the gain a little but at the same time my side windows were pretty unhappy at anything in the high 30's and up. Swift- I made some new songs I'd like for you to try but not sure how to get them to you. Email maybe?
  13. I was able to get a demo of shizzzon's car today. Besides being folded up in the front seat I was pretty happy how it has turned out so far. Only thing I wasn't happy with is he forgot my usb drive, again. lol. It is about the loudness I expected overall, but for being tuned where it is and one sub barely playing it played a lot lower than I expected. It was however a lot louder on the higher frequency range than I expected. His famous park and pound song about made me dizzy lol. I brought my video cam but was too caught up going thru his 9,000 songs I never got to. Good job so far Sean!
  14. First thanks to Shizzzon for helping me and supplying the meter. I wanted to test it as it sits. We didn't do any testing with positions, change amp gain, etc. Everything is set pretty low as of now due to partially my electrical and me starting on the conservative side until I get a better feel of it. Noone makes an alternator for my truck so I will have to do a custom bracket to mount one. Enclosure is a 8.5 cf3 tuned to 29hz or so with a 18 Fi Q on a sundown 2000d. It is in no way built for numbers, just wanted to see where it is to start with. We played with some tones to find the peaks and went from there. Enough jabber here is what we found. Sealed on the dash 142.7 at 31hz Driver door open on the dash 143.3 at 32hz Sealed in the kick 142.4hz at 29hz and 142.5 at 41hz Driver door open in the kick 143.8 at 31hz and 144.6 at 48hz Avg on music 27hz 139.4 31hz 140.8 39hz 142.1 Overall I'm pretty happy. I'm sure that is more in it, but for first testing I was hoping for over a 40 at or around 30hz and peak at 145 or better. I made the first one even higher than I expected and almost made my 2nd goal. Not bad for what it is I think and sounds good on music. It's only up from here. Something wicked this way comes.
  15. From the owner: yes we use the ti frame because I owned over 500 of them when I opened the company last year and they were bought before scott atwell bought the appearance patent..if he wants to come after me he can but it will just be a heartbreaker for him and there has been no companies put out of business by scott or aa as worse case scenario would be whatever company would have to pay a small amount of profit from speakers sold with that basket and only if scott could come up with the funds to sue said company as he would have to sue all 7 companies currently using the basket here in the states. the real kicker is that Jonathon Demuth owns 73% of the frigin tooling so for every basket bought he gets a frigin percentage of the profits....killin us all from the backside..so appearance patant for the 15 and 18 owned by scott atwel....appearance patent for the 10 and 12 owned by thilo stomper and the real money being made by the guy that bought the tooling....im in the process of tooling all new baskets so I can bypass all this mess...lol...
  16. Nice Steve!! How does the sound compare to the z?
  17. Sean with music? Say it isn't so! That dude looked nervous before you even started lol.
  18. Ive seen hair tricks out of a trunk setup before. There is more to it than where you have the enclosure. My current build is with a c pillar. Most of the reason why is because of my windows not because I'm trying to chase a number.
  19. That is called a c pillar wall. There are plenty of them out there. You will need to measure the space available to see if you have enough for what you want to build. You may have to build inside the truck to maximize what is available.
  20. You have limited space so you are building a bigger enclosure? Limited in a sense. Perhaps I should have been more specific. It is more of a square foot limitation and not cubic foot. I have over 110 cf3 to the front seats but I choose not to lose the back seats. I can build a bigger enclosure in the cargo area but to keep it below the window line limits me to 22" height to keep Meca street legal. If I keep to those limitations the net volume would be smaller than I want. Add to the fact it wouldn't solve the problem of the sliding windows. I can run modified and do a wall. If I build up using the full cubic volume of the cargo space I have roughly 40 cf3 gross. Using the current enclosure and making a pseudo wall sealed off I did not like the sound. Next option is the bandpass wall. Maybe it will be what I'm looking for. I see it as an option to try, not just because the cool kids are doing it.
  21. Since you asked I'll tell you where it fits in for me. I'm getting ready to design and build a c pillar wall in my land cruiser. Currently I have 1 18 in a ported enclosure on a 2k amp. I like the sound and response but I want more output. I am upgrading to 2 18s and a second 2k. The problems are currently the sliding side windows are vibrating badly. Enough that it is audible and worse one is starting to leak a little when driving in heavy rain. Secondly the area I want to build in limits my enclosure space so up is the only way to go. Sure I could fit a larger ported enclosure but the side windows would be even worse. I tried a ported wall with the current equipment and did not like the sound. Next option is a 4th order bandpass. It will seal off from my sliding windows and will allow me more space since im building up. The reason I decided to try this was because I think I wasnt getting any loading with the ported wall. The mid 40's were louder but it rolled off steep below 35hz. Maybe this will not be what im looking for either. But I wont know until I try. I like experimenting with new things. Some have had positive results. Some have not. No feelings hurt. Learned a few things along the way and worst case is some time and wood.
  22. As with anything it depends on the design and install. A bp design depends on not only the size of the sealed section but also what ratio ported to sealed as well as port area and tuning. It's easy to screw it up and not all subs are bp friendly. Basically the higher the ratio the more efficient but at the expense of frequency response. You can easily build something that is a one note wonder or sound like crap or both. But I think with the proper sub and design and goals it has a place.
  23. You think $1k for a 5k amp is ridiculous? Back when I got into car audio in the late 80's the Rockford power 1000 amp was $2000. Back then it wasnt uncommon to pay atleast a dollar per watt on anything of quality. I guess it is all about perspective and to me knowing how much stuff cost back in the day it seems much cheaper. Dont get me wrong though this still isnt a cheap hobby.
  24. Different cars and installs like different things. In one of cars about 3" and another nearly a foot seemed to sound the best. I always try to design the enclosure so I am able to move things around. Of course that isn't always possible on larger enclosures. Don't feel bad about your friends giving you a hard time. I'm not far away from 40 and I still like it loud! One of my friends was giving me a hard time about how much money I spend on audio and I told him I could say the same about his golf clubs. He likes to play golf and I like audio. It's no different. Except I can enjoy audio anytime I want
