Would have been cool to fit the SSA logo in there, but this one's nice too.

The Recipe for Giggles
Ingredients: 1 SoundSplinter RL-i8 D4 1 T-Box enclosure, 10H x 18W x 36L 1 Sundown Audio SAE-1500D prototype (fresh!) 1 Pioneer DEH-5900iB 1 slightly aged Toyota 4Runner, deadened and wired 1 middle aged Male (paunch optional) Preparation: Combine ingredients and mix thoroughly. Insert flat, narrow item (paring knives or screwdrivers work well) into "Gain" control of SAE-1500D and turn clockwise 1/3 rotation. Turn on the Pioneer, insert an audio CD of your preference. I prefer NIN's Only for this recipe, but just about anything will work well. Slowly increase volume to 1/2 and sit back in your seat. Serves 1-4

2002 Toyota 4Runner
Two words: Holy crap! The SAE-1500D prototype came in today. Although the sink doesn't match my SAX-100.4 or SAX-100.2, it looks sharp. The all-black cover has a rugged simplicity that I really like. I first plugged it in without changing my sub's wiring (series @ 8 ohms). Even at 1/3 gain, it easily outmuscled the 100.2. After rewiring it to 2 ohms... whoa. Not only have I identified numerous areas for deadening, but I'm going to have to deaden the front license plate!!! [Remember, this is a single RL-i8] I chit you not, me and my wife were laughing our asses off. The entire 4Runner was shaking at half-volume. I really want to check out the excursion on the RL-i8, but I'm worried the neighbors will call the cops. I'll try to find somewhere to video the new combo over the next few days.

Another 'which sub' thread!
Don't underestimate the RL-i8, it's a mean little driver. My listening preferences sound very similar to yours. I've been powering my single RL-i8 with a Sundown Audio SAX-100.2 at 8 ohms, and it sounds great. It has tremendous output in a ported enclosure, although the SQ is best in a sealed box (duh). I just picked up a SAE-1500D prototype from Sundown for the sub. If it sounds as good as I think it will, I'll be putting the SAX-100.2 up for sale.

Sundown Audio SD-1 "Blowout" Sale
These sound like nice subs to play around with on the cheap. Unfortunately I'm strapped for cash right now, hopefully some of these hang out until next month.

new to fiberglass
I should also mention this build log over at DIYMA. Jmelan did some incredible work on his 4Runner. This thread details his door pods and sub enclosure. Really great stuff, shows what a dedicated first-time fiberglass user is capable of.

new to fiberglass
Here is a rough outline of my notes. I'm also considering some custom door pods and possibly a custom sub panel for my 4Runner. I have not built anything myself yet, but I've been studying the work of others at DIYMA and FGF. For a rear mold: Tape out your mold area Apply your poly resin (B440 is recommended) Optionally, lay out some rope or other "spline" constructors to create additional strength Tear/cut up your glass mat, apply it to the resin, add more resin (repeat for as many layers as needed) Allow to dry, remove, trim the edges For the facia/front mold: Create your frame off the rear mold base (from rings, frames, dowels, etc) Stretch your "fleece" (polyester felt, spandex, etc... something that will hold the resin without flexing too much, but will also allow proper absorption of the resin) Staple/CA-glue/hot-glue the "fleece" to your framework as needed Apply your poly resin Tear/cut up your glass mat, apply it to the resin, add more resin (repeat for as many layers as needed) Allow to dry, remove, trim the edges Build-up/smooth the surface with Rage Gold, sanding in the "green stage" For a paint finish, use SEM primer and texture paint Hopefully I haven't left out anything major. This probably will not answer all of your questions, but will hopefully get you started in the right direction. I've done quite a bit of research and feel comfortable about the supplies I've mentioned.

2002 Toyota 4Runner
I just finished up the T-Box and installed it in the 4Runner. The output is at least the same as the last "t-line" attempt although the curve is flat all the way down. Denim, you need to come hear this one. P.S. I'll try to get some pics uploaded tomorrow, I'm exhausted from being at the hospital all day. P.P.S. The SAE-1500D prototype is arriving on Monday. I can't wait to hear that amp pushing the RL-i8 in this box!

From: Used, B-Stock, and Refurbished Amps
I had never bought any Sundown Audio equipment prior to my purchase of a SAX-100.4 and SAX-100.2 from SSA. I have been very happy with the sound quality and output of both amplifiers. I was so satisfied that I purchased a SAE-1500D prototype on here just the other day. Jacob (sundownz) makes some awesome amplifiers, and his customer service is top-notch.

Jacob, you rock! Just got my UPS notification for the shipment.

Welcome to the IHoP
I've created a blog detailing my son's condition and recovery, if anyone's interested.

Help Wanted -- Pick my components!
Either. The basket won't fit the (stock) door housing, and even if it did, it would block the window. The vehicle is a 2002 Toyota 4Runner. I will probably create some custom pods for the doors like this guy, for the Seas CAs. As mentioned elsewhere, I'm going to order some HDS tweeters for off-axis in the kickpanels. This thread now supercedes anything written here.

I would've gotten that one instead, but the hum would be audible in my 4Runner.

Looking for a New Vehicle
The more I see of the newer Tahoes, the more I'd like to have one for a SPL system. Since I don't have $30k to blow on a toy audio system, I think I'll file that away with my dreams of owning a Porsche.

That doesn't sound right, considering the production SAE-1000D is rated down to 1 ohm, and Jacob even said the prototype has been tested to 1 ohm. Sorry for the confusion, by 1/2 Ohm I meant .5 Ohm. Oops, my bad. I should have known that's what you meant.

Oops, nm... I just saw shipping is included. Sold! Where do I send payment?

It would be louder... even @ 2 ohms you have double the power on tap. Hmm... yeah, louder is good. How much for shipping to 21158?

Not to be a nag, but how do you think the SAE-1500D proto would compare in my current scenario? I have a SAX-100.2 bridged @ 8 ohms to a RL-i8 D4. I estimate the sub is probably getting around 200 RMS. Thanks!

Yep, that prototype does roughly the same power as the current SAE-1000D. Just to drive it home... the production SAE-1500D *will* meet power ratings no problem This is a prototype and improvements are being made as we speak. Yeah, I hear ya. Just curious, what's the difference between the SAZ-1500D and the upcoming SAE-1500D? Is the SAE class A/B?

Prototypes for Sale!
Sounds like the SAE-1500D would be a nice fit for a pair of RL-i8s? Same output as a SAE-1000D minus the warranty?
