  1. i'm confused...you ran it with 8 gauge when we said to put in 4, put in a bigger fuse size, and your amp started smoking?? I am a bit confused if that was the case. The sundown's are great amps, but contrary to what some people test them to, they are not indestructible. Run the 4 guage and get the proper fuse size and you will never regret it!
  2. So k, lets say I want to ditch the big sub idea(maybe an Rli-8 or something like that instead), or the sub all together. You'd recommend maybe getting the 9887 or similar and running these koda's active? The 6.5's put out a decent amount of bass, but I think maybe I'm just a bit scared of running them at full potential because I've been so used to running a stock set-up with the sub covering the mid range duties as well. Lets get some recommendations for me then on an active set-up. I have the Rockford 800a2 currently, but I'll need to upgrade to a 4 channel correct? So lets say this as my new set-up maybe... Sundown 100.4 or something similar in output Alpine 9887 Adire Koda 6.5's running active for the sub...maybe a powerful 8" or something along those lines. I saw sundown was selling the subs for 40 bucks if there's even any left. I have a 1500D I could use to run any of these options. Rears I just have a crappy set of JBL's that I fade out unless I have passengers and remember to fade it back, but so far none of them have noticed.
  3. You guys really think its worth running the koda's as active? I am not unsatisfied with the way they sound now, but at the same time, I haven't heard their full potential. kinda like running a sony sub and thinking its good, then switching over to Fi and realizing you were missing so much maybe? If I have to run active, the 9887 looks like a perfect deal for me then you guys are thinking? Or should I maybe up my anty and look into some other ones for running active? I'm not a hard core SQ guy or anything, but I am getting over running the whole big sub in the trunk thing and am trying to make the switch over to no sub and just the koda's up front. Lemme know!
  4. in many cases its not so much the amount of power but how clean the signal is being sent.
  5. Hey guys, here's my predicament. I currently have an Alpine 9881 that I use to control my 6.5" Component set of adire koda's up front. The koda's run off a Rockford 800a2 @ 4 ohms getting...maybe 150rms I think. However, I know I can get some better SQ out of them if I pick up my head unit features. Here's some of the things i am hoping for and what I am not really worried about. Need: Good iPod control ( I love the alpine one now, but am open to others) HP and LP filters (The 9881 now only has very limited options). A variable slope would be nice too CD Player(no mech-less ones for me) Good EQ flexibility (a parametric would be nice) T.A. Would also be nice Single Din Don't need: The main things I don't need are any fancy extras like navigation or whatnot and biggest thing would probably be that i'm not worried about running active. If I do decide to do active, it'll be far enough down the road that It'll involve a new HU and new amp and the works The 9887 is pretty high up on my list, but it is also a huge jump up from the 9881. My question I guess is if it is overkill and if there are a few HU's between those two HU's that will fit my need. The 9887 is a bit overkill for what I need, but it might also be necessary to get the other things I want. Let me know what your ideas are! As for budget...maybe 200-300.
  6. budget and power?
  7. If you're looking for hair tricks then go with some SSD's or MJ's or something like that. The more air you can move the better. Obviously if you have the money and power for the BL's, no reason I see why not to go with them. But if you are looking more for hair trick only and wanna save some money, the MJ's or SSD's are a killer option. Big subs, big port do it up!
  8. I used to have this problem and i don't really know what you're overall goals are, but for me, I opted to just go with the alpine route and I pretty much run everything off of my iPod. 160GB and it works perfect for me with playlists and everything. Now obviously carputer's can do much much more then just an iPod and you can add DVD and everything like that to it. But maybe the iPod choice or I think some Clarion devices have a USB input you can hook an external hard drive up to and use that to surf through the folders. Maybe something along those lines?
  9. I'm confused...you plan on adding all of that as a temporary set-up to earn extra cash?? I dunno what comps you're going to but you're going to have to be doing a lot to earn back what you spend on the system and earn extra cash. While the 3000d is an amazing amp,you really are going to need the electrical. Like...don't even add it into the budget if you don't have the electrical for it sorta need. I've seen a lot of your posts though and have been a bit confused. Are you planning on going with the MJ's still? Or are you switching over to some RF's? You can still get the MJ's and compete with them in some SPL set-ups. They move a lot of air and with the right install i'm sure you could put up some comparable numbers.
  10. you want to port them INTO the trunk??? Meaning you want a box laying across your back seat? I'm a bit confused. I think vladd's got some great advice for you though. As ridiculous as it may sound to some people, installation really is the key for these kind of things, not number of subs or the power you can send them. Stick with maybe 2 15's or something simple like that where you can give them the good airspace and I guarantee you'll be one of the loudest if thats what you're going for. Lord Baccus is running single subs in his explorer and he could come to your town and show everyone whats up I bet lol. The MJ's are nice subs and I wouldn't say they're a bad idea. But there may be other things that you can look into Also...a Toyota Camry and a 4000d will not be your best friend on a stock electrical. I don't know if you have a budget or what not, but there's a lot of unseen work that will need to be done before any of this can really be put into place. The ICONs are great subs though and aren't a bad choice. Get back to us and we can see what else we can come up with.
  11. Yeah, I mean its definitely not a boom box, but it does do pretty incredible in the low end. I think my box had its F3 at like...15Hz or something crazy like that. It outdid most other subs on songs with lower end even though they were just some cheap VMax's.
  12. Hey guys, just wondering what your input was about passive radiator boxes used in car set-ups??? I used to have a set-up of 2 12" VMax(the red older surround version) with 2 AE speaker 1050g PR's and its lows were pretty amazing. However, I had to have a pretty large box to utilize them like I did. Are there any advantages to me trying to use these PR's in say a SQ set-up or are there better alternatives out there? Let me know what your thoughts are! thanks
  13. haha yeah man how big of space do you have for these things? and can your car even handle that much power? otherwise I guess the best we can say is what shizzon came up with without knowing more. If you can afford the space and not the power requirements, then maybe look into some 18's or something for a bit more boom for your watts.
  14. I'm confused where you're getting that he has a sundown bigjon. haha maybe i'm just being blind or something. Or maybe just need some clarification. Is it you have two memphis 1500d's? or do you have one 1500d and a sundown 1500?
  15. he has a memphis 1500d. max power at 2 ohms
  16. Stick with what you like I'd say. You got the room and the power to hear a good sized difference in output I'd have to say. Double the power and double the subwoofer and seeing that you have enough room it should end up with a good output. How is the electrical looking?? Adding a whole nother 1500rms to the system will be a lot more taxing then just the single amp.
  17. what size box is that and with what tuning?
  18. As I understand it, polyfill works by making the subwoofer think its in a larger box then it really is. But you can only put a certain amount of it in. Did you have 4 15's in the previous box??
  19. Are you stuck with the 18's for a certain reason? I'd say put in the 15" BL's. You'll get more output from them in a good box then 18's in a to tiny of a box. If you have to stick with the 18's though I guess just put in some polyfill or something to try n' squeeze everything out of them you can.
  20. yeah, box plans would be awesome! thatd be much appreciated
  21. yeah, keep me updated with what yours ends up! and depending on how small your box is or if you even have access to a TL maybe post up some differences between sub/port forward vs. sub/port back vs. other variations!
  22. so you guys are doing sub back/ports back?? You got any pics of your installs I can take a look at? send me a PM or something if you want! INterested at seeing what you did with yours.
  23. Looking for some tips on the trunk set-up. I have an 18" BL in there currently that is upfiring as it is the only arrangement I could use and still get it in the trunk. I'm looking at switching to a 15" though and can change it around if you guys have tried anything that works well. Firing into seats, firing back, port arrangement. stuff like that that I was unable to with the 18". Looking to save some time before I start tuning!! maybe you guys have had some good tips for me to start with. Any other good trunk tips would be appreciated to. If I compete with this in my car, it'll be a first. I've typically only competed with hatchbacks
  24. Yeah, I'd say I've got some tips I was looking for! Thanks for finidng that old post for me. Weird it didn't come up when I searched. I think i'll just stick with a pretty standard box...45 degree angles in corners, probably do all thread bracing, and then just take my router and round off the port and side edges for a good look and functionality. seems to be a good place to start!
  25. do tell haha id love to hear what you thought!
