Stereo Integrity Mag v.4
I have the new Mag in an enclosure that's about 1.15 cubes before displacement, so maybe 1.05 after. It's powered by a Crossfire BMF1000D, giving a rated 1000 watts to it at 1 ohm. I must admit that when I first put power to the sub I was a little disappointed. It seemed pretty lifeless. However, you must give it time to break in. After about 3 hours of listening time I was much happier. It sounds excellent, tonality is superb, and it does blend with the mids very well. I must say that it definitely sounds different than any other sub you've probably tried (though I haven't listened to any other XBL^2 enabled subs), and you probably wouldn't believe me unless you actually heard it. At least I didn't realize just how different a sub could sound. The Mag gets about as loud as I thought it would. It's not blow-your-doors-off loud, but it can give things a good rattle and blur your vision a tad. However, as others have said, it definitely cannot soak the power like previous versions. The sub I replaced this with was a 15" v.2 Mag in a ported enclosure, and that sub could take everything my Crossfire could throw at it. But I'm a little timid to say that I did bottom out the new Mag. Let me tell you this- IT GIVES YOU NO WARNING. This sub sounds perfectly linear until you literally push that volume knob one notch too far, and then it will bottom. It is outstanding that it stays linear throughout its entire excursion range, but that's also a cause for apprehension for me. Other subs will let you know that it's getting a little too far by giving audible distortion signals. The Mag does not. It's volume 22: "Damn this sub sounds awesome, it's really getting into a groove," to volume 23: BRAAAP "AAAUUUGGGHH!!!! turn it down turn it down." It scared me a little. This sub sounds like pure sex when I played Def Leppard's "Let it Rock." It will handle The Crystal Method's most crazy basslines with ease and detail you've never heard. It'll play all four bass notes in Young Jeezy's "Put On" in perfect form and without exaggerating any of them. This sub has absolutely 0% distortion. What you are hearing is what the artist put onto the track. There is no overhang from previous notes or boominess. But there are things that will take some getting used to for me. One is the loss of the crazy low end that my 15" Mag had. I loved that thing. It didn't quite had the tonality that this sub has, but it was pure brute force and I loved it. The new Mag is not an aggressive sub. It's punchy, but not as punchy as I would have thought. Don't get me wrong, it's not sloppy either. It's just something in the middle that I can't quite figure out. It's punchy with a laid back theme. I dunno. If you're used to concerts where the kick bass from their loudspeakers snaps you in the chest, this does not sound like that. It also has some.......interesting......quirks. It seems to have a natural attenuation above 70 hz or so, and this may be why it blends with the mids so well. You can still hear the sub, but you don't feel it. Which is another weird thing about this sub, is that you can feel the pressure on your ears but it seems transparent. You can't feel it or tell where it's coming from in medium volume ranges. Which is great, I mean the other day I was driving down the road and turned my head to look for oncoming traffic and was like whoa.......I actually could not tell where the sub was located. It seemed to be emanating from all directions. When you crank it up that goes away, though, but that is likely mainly because it was overpowering my mids and highs. Speaking of cranking it up, I mentioned how you can hear it but not feel it so much at medium volume levels. This sub is different than others I've tried in that regard. Others steadily increase in both feel and hear, but this one really only gets felt in the upper 20% or so of it's output. It will give you a nice massage at about 90% full volume. This is an outstanding sound quality sub, and it will get the job done for any true audiophile. It also has a fairly small mounting depth. However, for me and my Explorer that wasn't really a concern. If I had any suggestions for my own tastes, it would be to deepen the mounting depth to a more conventional design so that it could have more usable throw. A slightly more aggressive sub may suit me better as well, and I kinda miss the lowend monster that the 15" was. But these are my own fault for picking a subwoofer that was not entirely in line with my tastes. I do have a bit of basshead in me. I did want a smaller box (my gf was also pushing for that pretty hard), and this obviously has that advantage, along with weight saving. I forgot to mention build quality, but come on, it's SI. Build quality is never an issue.

Welcome to the IHoP
Or some jerk that has been backed into a corner Ford's CEO is doing the same thing. What they fail to mention is they're already billionaires and only work a few hours a month anyways, so it's nothing to them. The first thing they need to do is get rid of the UAW. WTF? My link was actually to the Ford CEO taking the $1 a year payment. Then MSN must have later switched it to the GM needing 12 billion article? Damn MSN trickery.

Bandpass vs ported
download the alpha. I don't know why, but the alpha has more options than the beta, and I think actually came out after the beta. Doesn't make much sense, I know.

>30mm Xmax <20Hz Fs D2 15's
High Sd? So just a larger diameter driver? haha. I take it you just want something to belt out the lows between 0-40 hz or so? Your parameters are pretty hard to find by themselves, much less together. Especially the <20 hz Fs in a car audio subwoofer with high excursion. The Dayton Titanic is somewhat close, 20 hz Fs but only 20 mm xmax. The Audiopulse Axis is close, 22 hz and 30 mm. It's $721 on partsexpress.com. The Adire Tumult has 34 mm and 19 hz. Good luck finding one though.

Welcome to the IHoP
It's officially cold. I've gotten out a pair of tearaway pants to wear over my shorts at night after my shower.

00 mercury sable
It's a Ford/Mercury, so it has 5x7/6x8 speakers. I just bought some 5x7's and they dropped right into my Explorer's holes. You can make some 6.5" spacers pretty easily. As for the EQ......it depends on how much headache you want vs. how much you think he'll actually use it. You'll have to find out if the EQ has low level and high level inputs and outputs and if the factory amp has low or high level inputs, and you may have to buy one or two LOCs depending on what they each have if they aren't the same.

Whats the best sounding HU in your opinion??
My mid-grade Alpine is better than the mid-grade Pioneer I had before, and a whole lot better than the entry-to-mid-grade Kenwood I had. That Kenwood was garbage. Absolute night and day difference in sound when I upgraded it to my Alpine. My friend has a clarion and it does pretty good. But I don't know about crossover options and all that, I've never had a deck with them on it. They're all too expensive for my tastes.

Welcome to the IHoP
I still can't acces my messages to give you a reply doh. But that's ok, no immediate biggie. It was more of a general topic, I wasn't going to employ it on my newest sub/amp creation.

Question about FIQ 12
It also depends on your definition of "high bass." What frequencies is that? 60, 80, 100 hz? IMO, a sub shouldn't be crossed over above 80 hz. If your system is lacking in the region anywhere between 75 and 200 hz, you need to address your mids because they aren't up to snuff.

Welcome to the IHoP
good morning. I haven't seen my gf since last tuesday, and apparently that's a good thing. She's very sick, started out as a sore throat and escalated into can't talk or swallow and yesterday started throwing up. She's back at her parents', so I probably won't see her for a couple more days too. Hope I don't catch that stuff. Made my new box for the Mag this weekend. I used Birch plywood, and I friggin love that stuff. It's so light, my 1 cube box weighs like 12 lbs, compared to like 80 for my 4 cube MDF box I had in there. The whole 4x8 sheet was so stiff too, it didn't flex hardly at all even when only supporting one end. The MDF would darn near touch the ground hanging off the bed of the truck from bending so much. I'll post pics sometime this year. and maybe a review.

Need a lesson in RTA and Crossover set up
the bandpass on the mids is reversed. you want the high pass at 100 and low pass at 3500.

small yet long question about FI Q 12"
that sub has dual 2 ohm coils. 1.75 is the Re of each coil. Amps and subs alike are rated at nominal loads, which is the dual 2 part. So you putting that sub on that amp would be no different than putting any other dual 2 ohm sub on it.

Bandpass vs ported
if you have the alpha version it's under the same tab as frequency response graph. Just above the graph.

Need some Tech help
how did it get blown? Electrical or mechanical failure?

Not positive on what to get
You definitely need extra batteries. They don't put an extra strain on your alternator. In fact, a much worse strain on the alternator would be if you only had one battery, because once that battery starts getting drained by the system and the voltage drops to 10 volts or whatever, the alternator has more work to do to get it back up to 12 volts. More batteries = closer to a constant 12 volts. They'll store the current you need for prolonged playing. More current capacity = less voltage drop. and dampening, ha. No amount of dampening will save your vehicle from two 18s and 6000 watts. You can try though.
-
Bandpass vs ported
you'll definitely want a wider passband than .3 hz, haha. Aim for about 5 hz or so. That way you have a little room to play with as far as what frequencies will be loudest once you actually get the box inside the vehicle. Otherwise you'll be building box after box after box. And don't forget to look at the impedence graph. If your box is loudest at 42 hz but you have a huge spike in impedence up to 50 ohms at 42 hz, it's not going to be as loud as it could be. Cabin gain will not even it all out. 24 db is way too much difference for cabin gain to help, and not to mention that power handling is probably lower at 41 hz in that box as well.

Alternator/ battery/ cap issue?
dropping to 12.7 on a big bass hit isn't too bad. It's probably fine.
