New Alternator
I'm going to be running 2 1,000w Sundown amps and 2 10" SSA Icons and today my alternator went so I guess it's a great time to upgrade. Any recommendations? I really have no idea what I'm looking for, but definitely would prefer something more budget-oriented as I don't have a lot of money right now and need to get my car back in working order. This will be for a 2000 Sunfire.

copying movies online to dvd disk
Not only is it illegal (which is probably against the rules here, but I don't know), but why would you want to take a streaming flash video file which probably isn't very good quality to start with and then further reduce the quality by converting to DVD? Maybe you don't care as much as I would, but it would probably look like complete ass. If you want high quality rips either rip them yourself or find a quality private torrent tracker.

When you say "fed the same signal" do you mean hooked up to the same amp or with the amps bridged? Because from other peoples advice I think I'll buy the package deal (10" Icon + 1000d) and then when I have money later down the road I'll buy them again. I'll use the box I have for now since because it's dual chambered I can just put one sub in at a time. If I want to build a new box down the road, I will. I guess for the subs and amp I'm looking at getting... 10" SSA Icon + Sundown Audio SAE-1000D - $479 10" SSA Icon + Sundown Audio SAE-1000D - $479 The total is less than the SSA Icons and the one large Kicker amp, so I'll go with the package deals. I'm kind of lost when it comes to component speakers though. How are they typically set-up? Could somebody expand on the active vs passive thing since I'm lost on that? Like I said, before I just replaced the 6x9's in the back with new ones and the same with the ones in the doors. Looking at component sets, none come with 6x9's. Component sets seem to only come with two tweeters and two speakers. Right now I have two tweeters (stock, and down by the floor, not sure if thats very optimal), two speakers in the front on the door near the floor, and two 6x9's in the rear. All four speakers being Sony Xplodes. As for deck, I'm really interested in the Pioneer Avic-D3 if I can afford it and/or find a better deal on it. I'm open to suggestions for this though as I'm also unsure exactly what to look for. The feautures in the Avic-D3 just caught my eye. My only real requirement is that it has a built in hardrive or some sort of ipod interface or SD card reader or USB reader. I hate dealing with CD's and would like to avoid them as much as possible. The ipod interface on the D3 especially caught my eye. Leave my Ipod in the glove box and just access everything from the D3 like it was just a built in harddrive. I also like the bluetooth feautre. Originally I was interested in the Z3, but is it really worth the extra price? What feautures are offered for the extra price? Also, any recommendations for wire? I'm assuming I'd need 1/0 guage for the big three and run 1/0 guage to a distrubtion block and split it into two 4 guage lines, one to each amp? Also, how many square feet of damplifier do you think it would take to do a small 2000 Sunfire? Would it be worth it to go with Damplifier pro or would I be wasting my money. If it's worth it, I definitely don't mind as I hate rattling. Right now even with my chitty duals people hear me coming, but they don't hear bass. They hear rattling. Also, am I going to have to put money into anything else, like a larger main battery or alternator? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to a lot of this. I really do appreciate you guys helping though. EDIT - What about this for wire? http://item.express.ebay.com/Consumer-Elec...cmdZExpressItem

I think I want to build a new box anyway. My current box is dual chambered because a friend of mine said that was better than single chambered (any truth to this?). I figure if I build a single chamber box I'd make better use of space and I like the look of 1 wider port anyway. Also, maybe I could put a window on the backside with blue LED's inside so you can see the magnets... idk just some ideas. Any recommendations on square port area or does that not really matter?

How much can the Sundown SAE-1000D be found for though? The MSRP is $400, but couldn't I find it cheaper than MSRP and it pretty much be almost the same cost in the end as the kicker? Would the Sundown be enough power though? I know the RMS for both is 1000w, but you also said the driver can handle more. I've also heard the Sundowns are underrated as well though, correct? Also, my box is 2.3 cubic feet. Is that ok? The optimal is 2.5. Would a 0.2 difference make any difference? Sorry for the stupid question, but what exactly does that mean? I know nothing when it comes to component speakers. When I upgraded from stock I just took my 6x9's in the back and replaced them with Sony Xplode 6x9's and did the same for the speakers in the door.

denalilvr, any reason you would pick the kicker amps over the sundowns?

Thanks for the reply. What are the recommended tuning and cubic footage for the Icon though? I ask because I already built a box based on FI Q's specifications. I have no problem selling the box if you think I should build a new one for the Icon, just asking. The box is tuned at 32Hz, but I don't remember cubic footage and whatnot. It was around the higher end of recommended size, since it is 1.2 recommended for one 10" I went with around 2.4 split into two different chambers with a 1.25 inch wide port on each side. I could go measure to get exact cubic footage if you need it. I definitely don't mind building a new box though. It was actually kind of fun.

Thanks for the suggestions. Also denim, I don't really have a set budget in mind. Once I look a bit more I may be able to give you an estimate budget though. Once I figure out around how much a quality setup will run me. Also, thanks for the recommendation on the SSA Icon. I never gave it a thought, but was looking at some videos and it looks impressive. How would it compare to the FI Q or SSD or an Alpine Type X? I really like the slogan on the main ICON page... "If you want a class leading sound quality and vision blurring output, but do not want to make your checking account sweat, the ICON is the right choice."

Well, originally I was thinking of getting two 10" Q's with BP power option. That would come to a total of almost $600. I was only going to buy one first and then add the other one later, rather than buying everything at once. The box I currently have was built around FI Q specifications and is split into two separate chambers, one for each sub. So any sub(s) that are $600 and under I guess. If I can get a single sub for less then 2 FI Q's that will be just as nice, I'd prefer that. Also, since I'm not very happy with any of the components in my system right now, yes, I am looking at upgrading pretty much everything. New head unit, new speakers, new subs, new amp, etc. I won't be able to do it all at the same time due to money constraints, but I figure I'll do one thing at a time. First on my list is probably sound deadening since rattling is annoying as hell, and even with my duals there is quite a bit of rattling. I couldn't imagine a really nice system without deadening. As for extra battery / larger main battery and bigger alternator, I'd prefer not to as that would even add to the cost more, but if I really need to in order to get what I want then I will. So, to answer your question, yes I am willing to do so. I definitely plan on doing the Big 3 as well, but unsure what wire / fuse holder & fuse, etc. to use.

first big three
This is probably a stupid question, but... Is 1/0 gauge wire the same as 0 gauge wire? Because looking on parts express I only see 1/0 and it's pretty expensive as well. What wire do people here recommend and where do people usually buy it?

Not at all. They aren't loud at all and my whole setup just sounds like ass. I think that's why I originally said I wanted an SQ setup, because I want something that sounds a lot better than what I have now. However, I assume even going more SPL oriented but with good componenet speakers it would be both louder and much better sounding than what I currently have. Anybody else have any specific recommendations?

How I define SQ is pretty much just enjoying my music. I've been in some cars that don't even have decent subs, but they overpower the component speakers to the point where you hear nothing but bass. That's great for SPL I guess, but this is a daily driver and I want to enjoy my music. So I guess I don't really want a SQ setup by definition. Just a good setup for a daily driver that sounds decent, but also has plenty of low end.

Currently I drive a 00 Sunfire with no sound deadening, crappy walmart Sony Xlpodes for components, stock HU, and chitty duals. I did build my own box for the duals and they sound a lot better than they did in the box they came in, but my system still sucks. I'm limited on cash being a college student and all, but I don't want to skimp on stuff just because. I'd rather save up for something nice if I have to. Also, I SQ is my main concern. I mostly listen to rap and would really like to enjoy my music, and with thoughts of getting an in-dash DVD unit, that's something to think about too. I also want to be really loud as well though... for those times you just feel like showing off. If you guys were in my situation and wanted a really nice SQ setup that got really loud as well, what would you guys do? Being tight on money I would probably be upgrading one thing at a time. Any product recommendations? Originally I was going to first Dynamat my car (trunk rattles really bad even with just duals), then get two 10" FI Q's (the box the Duals are in are actually built to spec for the FI's), a Sundown Audio 1500D, a Pioneer in-dash DVD unit, and I had no idea about components or an amp for components. There's also electrical in my car and wire to worry about too.. Will perform the Big 3, and I'm assuming I'd need a better alternator and battery. Any wire recommendations for doing the Big 3? Also, keep in mind where I live the only decent system is a friend of mine who has 2 Alpine Type X's. So that's the only thing I've really heard besides cheap walmart / best buy stuff.

Box design help
This is my first real system and I plan on running 2 10" FI Q's with a Sundown Audio SAZ-3000D. I have plenty of experience with woodwork, but since this is my first real system where I'm building my own box, I need some help with that. First off, originally I was planning on facing the subs inside the car and seal off the rest of the trunk. It's a 4-door and I can't really remove the back seat, but the majority of the time the back seat is down anyway. However, after reading a bit more I've heard a lot of people mention and tests done to show the subs may actually be louder facing the rear of the car. What do you guys think the optimal setup in my car will be? I'm driving a 2000 4-door sunfire. Also, if I do face them towards the rear is it still a good idea to keep the seat down? I know the max recommended for two 10" FI Q's is 2.4 cubic feet. I plan on building a box around there. However, does the recommended take into account port volume or driver displacement or do I have to take that into account myself? If I build the box 30 inches wide, 13 inches high, and 18 inches deep with two inch wide ports on each side (two ports since I'm splitting it into two chambers, one for each sub) I'm assuming that would give me 2.69 cubic feet without driver displacement (but taking into account wood thickeness, 3/4" MDF). With displacement it would bring me down to 2.45 cubic feet, a bit less if I take into consideration that it's split into two chambers. So I think I have box size and dimensions under control? The problem I have is port width, length, volume, etc. I plan to tune at 32Hz since I heard this was optimal. I was also recommended to do 15 square inches of port per cubic foot of volume. So how big should each port be? Any input? How wide do you think the ports should be? If it were 2" wide, I'd do 9" long, 1.5" wide, 12" long, or 1" wide, 18" long?

My first "real" system
How so? The RMS on the subs is 1000w each and the amp puts out 1500w @ 1Ohm. Wouldn't that be 500w underpowered? If I get the Q'a with the BP option (which I plan on doing), wouldn't that make them even more underpowered? Also, say I was able to fit a 15", two 12's, one 12, or two 10's. Which would be loudest? The problem is, I think I'll have trouble using as much of my trunk as possible because there's the issue of actually getting it into the car. The fact that mine is a four door makes fitting a box through the door very difficult, and a large box is definitely not fitting through the trunk, which is why I think to ensure I don't have any problems I should just go with two 10's or one 12.

My first "real" system
So I'm assuming everybody thinks my plan of 2x SAZ-1500D's and 2x 10" FI Q's is a good one?
-
My first "real" system
Wouldn't two 10's be louder than one 12 though? Also, I think I may just get the SAZ-1500D because the RMS rating @ 1 Ohm is 1500w and run each sub off of that. However, a friend of mine said I may not want to go 1 Ohm because it will be more demanding on my electrical system and with the money spent beefing it up, I'd be better off getting an amp that can supply around that at 2 Ohms. Any thoughts? I don't want to underpower my subs at all.

My first "real" system
I listen to mostly rap, and some rock. I think I'm going with the Q. Sound quality is important and compared to my Duals I'm guessing it will be a LOT louder. I figure if I build the enclosure well it should get pretty loud while sounding extremely good, which is what I'm after. So I think I'd definitely be happy with them. So does two 10" Q's with a Sundown SAE-1000D powering each sound like a plan?
-
My first "real" system
I can't run fit a single 15" in my trunk. I can either fit one 12 or two 10's. Also, one thing that just caught my eye with the Q is the lower frequency response. It seems a lot of people are recommending going with the BL's rather than the Q though, but then other people recommending the Q over the BL. I like loud, but I'm just afraid I'm not gonna like the sound quality. I want something really loud inside and outside the car with a lot of air pressure and "punching" but at the same with with good sound quality since im putting a DVD navigation system in and really like to enjoy my music. You think 2 10" BL's is my best option? Would those two be better than 1 12"? Also, any recommendations on amps? I just don't want to spend a ton of money, but ~$500 for an amp is reasonable I guess. I'd like to go cheaper, but I don't really want to sacrifice my system just because I wanted to go cheaper. Something that will definitely give the subs enough to work to their full potential. Price range for subs is the same idea, dont want to spend stupid money, but dont want to skimp either. The $300 price of the BP Power Q seemed like a decent price. I couldn't afford two at once, but I was planning on running one and then adding another later when I got the money.
-
My first "real" system
Right now I have cheap Duals from best buy, so this is why I call this my first "real" system. Originally I had no idea what I was looking for, just that I wanted good sound quality since its a daily driver and I wanted it LOUD. I ran across a few choices and like the AudioQ HDC3's, but I figured I'd go with the FI Q's instead as I've heard they get pretty loud while still sounding extremely good. Heard great things about FI as a company as well. I am driving a 00 4-door sunfire so fitting a very large box isn't really going to happen. I have enough trunk space to fit a larger box to fit two 12's (maybe), but the problem is getting it into the trunk. So my options are either one 12" or two 10's. I have decided on going with two 10's and building a decently sized box for them, split up into two seperate chambers, one for each sub.. both within the recommended cubic footage. I'm only going to be picking up one 10" for now, but buying another one later down the road. I think I will be powering each Fi Q 10" (with BP power option @ 2 Ohm) with a Crunch GP2500D as they seem like really nice amps for a decent price, and if I decide I need an amp for component speakers I'll pick up a GP4100 (since I'm going with a GP for the subs, figured I'd do the same for components), which I'm assuming should be plenty for the current Sony Xplodes component speakers I have and any upgrades in the future. What do you guys think? As for a deck, I think I'm picking up a Pioneer AVIC-D3. Everything sound good for components? Looking for input from other people running FI Q's. Thanks in advance!
