Official "I'm excited for the RLi-8's" Thread
> pffttt, make more holes I'd love to, but the problem is that 6 holes between 360 degrees is differently spaced than 8 holes between the same. Therefore, if I just drilled extra holes in the current gaskets, there would be at least 2 holes that would go unused and look aesthetically displeasing I swear these 8" drivers have been an absolute nightmare! Can't wait until I have a freakin' skyscraper full of 'em so I won't have to worry anymore

Official "I'm excited for the RLi-8's" Thread
Oh my, my restless friends!.. been a busy week, in the midst of it all gettin' a better computer system up and running (dual core Athlon x2 3800 woot - my first AMD chip!). Aaanyway, about these here RL-i8's, I have some good, and some not so good news. Turns out that the first batch will be done in only a few days - BUT, we've hit a snag in that our new basket has 8 mounting holes, and the gaskets we have on hand only have 6! After a quick solicitation of our US based part suppliers, it seems that there are no tooled 8 hole gaskets readily available; and so we will attempt to continue looking find some both here and in China, however the Chinese suppliers are on their new year's holiday until February 7th. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I just want to make sure that these babies are dressed up proper before they are unleashed - so keep your fingers crossed! If it ends up taking too long to find appropriate gaskets (ie. more than a couple weeks), I will most likely start shipping them out sans gaskets.

Great idea, but it's Friday and time to break into the beer Hopefully I'll see this thread as a reminder come later on! Thanks for the suggestion

Yep, email will definitely score you a "real-time" answer, as it may take me a few days to get around to updating the website. Dual 4 Ohm RL-i10's are in, and I will be sending out notice to everyone on the waitlist this weekend, as well as updating the website over the weekend as well. The first batch of RL-i8's went on the production line today and should be ready by the end of next week! Also, I now have the RL-s15 rebuilt and ready to ship again. I'll probably make a thread for all of these updates towards the end of next week when the 8's are ready to ship.

thanks mike
> When can the public pick these babies up? Can't say with any certainty as of yet, since I am in the process of sourcing plate amplifiers for a possible 'plug-in' system using these 6 ohmers. If that happens, there will only be a limited quantity of raw drivers released, possibly here on SSA. Really can't tell you at this point though - rest assured the reformed RL-i8's will be ready before these go public. That being said, a fresh batch of RL-i10's just came in, so the RL-i8's should be following suit shortly thereafter =]

Need cabinet size help for dual RL-p15's, sealed
> So for two drivers would I double the cabinet size to 4.1-5? > That does seem a little small to me. Indeed, the RL-p's are optimized for relatively small boxes. You can go bigger by all means, which can aid in your low-frequency output considerably.. however, you also run the risk of experiencing boomy or muddy sound which is characteristic of an underdamped enclosure. If you do decide to go so large, I would recommend setting your low pass crossover lower than you normally would. But honestly, if you really want massive output on the low-end, the RL-p's are a natural for a low-tuned vented enclosure.. which, considering the amount of space you're considering using sealed, would be more practical overall! My suggestion would be up to 4.5 cu ft net volume per driver tuned between 18 - 22 Hz. I myself use my RL-p15 in a 3.5 cu ft @ 25 Hz but am likely going to swap out for a change soon just for the hell of it.

Hah, you guys are ruthless! Truth be told I'm gettin' steeped on the RL-i's what with the retooling and so many non-house parts. So in the interests of keeping the cash flow stable I simply can't handle a group buy on those right off the bat. But if you have a keen eye and a quick trigger, you'll be able to snag a deal or few that I'll be posting here at random

> theres that 6ohm 8" and a remake of an RL-i 8 rite? Correct - and if all goes as planned, there will be two voicecoil configurations offered on the new RL-i8 (and 10's!). Man I'll be happy once these are back and fully stocked. I am very sorry to those who may have had their hopes up for months on end at this point. I really didn't foresee this taking so long, but unfortunately there isn't much I could do to speed the process. Just wish the scope of the delay had been made clear from the get go, but unfortunately I was speculating off of poor information coupled with some random instances of damn-that-sucked-ness. Sooooooooooooooooooon!

Oh Sixty my man, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Luke of Santa Cruz, California (also a former customer) snagged that proto 8" not more than three hours before you posted here! If it falls through, you're next in line - but he seems very excited about the purchase so it's not lookin' too good for ya Once I get more of these in hand and decide what I'm ultimately going to do with 'em (I'd still like to reserve most of 'em for a plug-in custom HT enclosure w/ matched plate amp) - I'll probably let another one or two go on special down the line. For now, keep that trigger finger sharp! .. and for all you guys complaining about the single 6ohm, don't worry my friends! The retooled RL-i8 will be making its comeback shortly and will be available with the option of lower nominal impedance. As I said, this special edition 8 isn't necessarily for stand-alone retail anyway (though who knows how things will pan out in the end  ) On that note, I can't believe those RL-pizzles aren't selling up there! $157 for a slightly used RL-p?! $199 for a totally new one with a few scratches?! Odd, considering I'm still getting orders paid for at full price through the website - looks like we may need to recruit some new members, that or the people visiting my website should be doing some more homework Only 36 hours left for this batch of sales!!

You'd be able to crank out 2" peak to peak if you really push it. Throw-wise, it is similar to the RL-i8 and should make for just under 1.5" peak to peak of linear excursion. I have yet to make up boxes for it - but once I do (likely this coming week), you're more than welcome to come give her a listen.

From: Official "I'm excited for the RLi-8's" Thread
Unfortunately, I only have a very limited stock of these new single 6ohm 8's (with no plans to rebuild additional stock in the future), and have it in my mind to source a batch of custom plate amp's to put together a plug-in-ready woofer for the home audio market. So as it stands, this is by far your best chance to snag one of these new 8's at such a steal. I may offer 25 pcs or so for stand alone sale on the website (not for $80 mind you!), but should my dreams pan out the majority of these will be used in fully finished units.

Well Mr. Swiss, if you keep an active eye out - you might be able to find a special on an RL-p15 pop up between now and then. ^bump^ for the covert release of our newest 8" driver (NOT our redesigned RL-i8 mind you, although similar in capability). Principle differences include: Foam surround No copper shorting ring Slightly higher power handling Single 6ohm coil

RL-P Box
> in context of this topic, do you prefer the RL-p in a larger sealed box, or a small ported? For optimal sound quality, I would opt for the larger sealed box over a smaller ported box. The small ported box would get a little peaky for my taste, unless the tuning was very low (but then the box wouldn't be that small anymore ). > which one of these would work best I would definitely run with the ZV112-2030 (12", 2.0 cu ft vented @ 30 Hz). In fact, that's right on the money for the RL-p12
-
RL-P Box
> optimal sealed for two RL-P 12s getting 800 watts a piece in an SQ application I'd aim for about 1 cu ft net volume (+ ~0.2 cu ft driver displacement). If you are not concerned with the ultimate lows, you could go down to around 0.6 cu ft net volume for a very flat smooth response. Alternately, if you want to put a greater emphasis on the low end and overall output to boot, you might want to go up to 1.25 cu ft net volume. Always a tradeoff.
-
RL-P Box
Neither of those enclosures is going to be optimal for the RL-p12. I would either step up to an RL-p15 and run with the 2.5 cu ft, OR .... save at least $70 and build your own to spec! I'm sure there's a few members who will draw up plans and cut-sheets tailored for your application at a low cost (~$10). Also check out the [Competition & Fabrication forum]

Ive got some port noise...
True, you may be hearing the noise from the pole vent exhaust but damn, it must be close to the back wall if you are! Even so, you are a little low on port area so I'd continue the plan of beefin' that up regardless. Do a baffle or an extended ass - it all sounds good to me! The big ass idea would also, as the other Mike pointed out, allow that rework to go largely unseen.
