Your vehicle suspension may not like you.... Looks to be killer man.

What voltage to set gain to?
Everything looks ok. Headunit is solid and the box is right on the money. As you have stated you have the sub-sonic filter on that driver can handle everything down low to it so that should be OK. As for the surround coming off - I have searched for reports and this is not a very common issue so no reports of defect or repairs were available. I think if the glue you put on is good and stout you will be fine. I do hope you didn't over do it though, or you will knock the sub out of whack. The cone is not heavy on subs and the additional weight will possibly hinder your driver and cause tilt. Best of luck.

18" Xcon ported @30HZ
I have always done a different approach with this. In the past I did the 15 per cube but found some craziness in that they got monsterously huge. I developed a fromula that has (as far as the enclosure program I use) worked well at keeping the port noise down. I take the driver or drivers in the chambers' displacement (cone movement, not the physical) and take one third of that for area. It shows great results and works around the drivers that you use to prevent more port than the driver will need. I am curious if anyone else has tried this? So far the few enclosures I have built in the past have sounded good and the ports have been utterly quiet. In this case for the Xmax right at 76 sq. inches (based on the numbers of 1210 sqcm and xmax of 31mm= 187.55 sqin. sd and 1.22 in of xmax) No idea on mechanical max but I would guess you won't be pushing to that extreme will you?

What voltage to set gain to?
Something else comes to mind. What is your headunit? It can also create distortion if the RCA voltage out is over-driven and distorts.

What voltage to set gain to?
If you followed that diagram then you are fine at 4 ohms. Now what is the Subs model number. I will check for background of problems and solutions for your surround. What size box is it in? Ported or sealed? Also if I were in your place I would set up that woofer at 40 volts thats 400 watts or check your voltage at the amps power terminals. Do so idle and when playing the sub. Get your voltages and write 'em down and we can go from there. I bet when you are pushing that amp you will see some drops unless you have upgraded the electrical system or put a capacitor in-line with your amp.

What voltage to set gain to?
You may not realize but that amp is not capable of 500 watts if it isn't pulling on a solid 14.4 volts. Kenwood should rate at the more realistic voltages between 12 and 13. I'm gonna go on a limb and say 400 watts would be more accurate. Anything after that will be seeing a real ramp up in distortion. Something else, you stated the coils are dual 2 ohm. Did you wire them series or parallel? If you have parallel configuration (+ to + and - to - ) you should go for the low voltage of 22.36 volts. This amp is stated to be 1 ohm stable but it is a Kenwood so do so with caution.

Speaker suggestions for sax100.4
Best of luck to both of you on that. I have heard some nice stuff from Boston. I await your review Sir. Focal has been incredible in the past so them Polyglass sets ought to be phenominal. I believe they have the tweeter attenuation on the crossover which makes it easier for the pillar installs. At least they won't ring your ears out.

Trouble squeezing it in!
I would take some pics today but its a little dark with this freak storm we are having. Have to wait until it is a little brighter due to my camera flash being screwed. Have to use camera in the cell. It's looking like we will mash that 15 in there.....eventually.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Thats cool. Any pics? I am just curious as to the volume. Is it suited for the XCON to get that low?

Trouble squeezing it in!
Sounds loud for sure. What's the tuning frequency and the systems frequency range look like? Power recommended and the dimensions would be good. And the price too. And a pair of white cotton gloves to keep 'em clean.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Thanks for the time. I guess some things aren't meant to be. I may never get the big boy in this ride. That doesn't mean that I will not get a different ride. I may just get me an Exploder and get an XCON 18. That would be nice but probably a long off proposition. Must get back to work before I go shooting them bills out of my wallet. Well I'm gonna crash. Got to help a neighbor put his fuel injection system back together.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Good luck with that. Around here, too many a**holes let the nails fall out of their truck. I went 8 years driving before I ever had a flat. The year I got my first, I had like 10 flats. Pricks and their irresponsible handling of sharp objects.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Well that has come to mind but I am thinking that it would be hindersome. First that woofer is enormous. I wanted it to fire up at the rear deck, so it might not be able to squeeze in. Second, the spare tire is in the bottom. I just know if I had a box I couldn't get out, I would surely have a flat someday real soon after.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Nope I would have to rip them out. The problem with that is the support brace is still going to hinder me in height.

Speaker suggestions for sax100.4
Just because the amp is rated to do it doesn't mean it must. He can break out a tone cd and play 1khz tone and go for the right voltage. Never heard of an amp not having better THD numbers when the gains are low. Good luck with your shopping.

Trouble squeezing it in!
Well Quentin, things aren't looking so good for squeezing that XCON 15 in my Malibu. I have measured and measured and it would appear that the opening to my trunk is too d**n small for 3.5 cube box ( I calculated 5.3 cubes external : 16.75 x 32 x 17 ported and tuned at roughly 30hz with external flare, double baffle and bracing is added). Inside the trunk there is plenty of room but they made the lid so narrow it appears I have no way to squeeze it in. Will it play in a small sealed box well enough or should I just port a 12. Remember that I am looking for them deep throaty notes to really shine (similiar to them old round solo-barics, just louder. Or is their a better suited 15 that can squeeze down into a smaller ported enclosure. I'm gonna get cardboard and start making mock enclosures to see just what the largest box could be. I thought about running it from the back seat and sliding it back but that d**n door is just as bad as the trunk lid. It would appear that GM is not Woofer Friendly. I await any suggestions you may have. Crutchfield is now selling FOCAL! Is Focal falling from grace? This chit ain't right man.

12w7 vs. xcon 12
I think we are seeing the range of consumers here too. If you can cross your sub at 50hz and still get loud, you have killer mid-bass or no output there at all. Poor bastards like me have to squeeze as much (bandwidth) as we can out of our woofers so that the mids and highs can keep up with output without sounding like total chit.

Why do you all love 10" subs ?
As I read further through my HT book, I understand that the LE rating gives you a map so to speak, of how the drivers resists the flow of the signal. I understand as the inductance rises it causes the woofer to appear more resistant to the current. If the woofer is to heavy for this frequency it builds up the energy and you get excessive heat buildup. Too much gets you a good burn. Thats if I have read into this right.

As I read more on this driver technology it seems I have still much more to learn. The whole statement is partially right and somewhat wrong.

12w7 vs. xcon 12
Makes sense to me. Never really thought about the blending of the stages. I was merely looking at the subwoofer itself. I would see the xmax as aiding the driver at being capable of them lower frequencies as they require twice the displacement as the octave above (unless your enclosure aids them of course). But I do agree that the front stage is the most difficult. Between cars and indoor acoustic characteristics, it is obvious that the car murders frequencies much more so than that of your living room. I have noticed that my car in particular kills mid-bass and seems to really amplify them freggin' tweeters. Bass is really a simple fix, just get more in the trunk. It takes roughly 2 times the power for me to hear what would appear to be a balance in bass and the rest. I am sure if metered that would show me that it isn't as bad as my ear hears. As far as this comparison is concerned, the ability to reproduce accurate notes, I would say they are both amazing. I still think the XCON is the sensible choice. I might even say go with the XCON 10 as it would hold its own against that 12W7, IMO. The question is how low and how high are we looking at this sub playing as far as frequencies are concerned? That, to me, is the limitation of the drivers compared here. One is much more broad in its range (XCON), at least from what I have heard. Have no inductance data to confirm the higher frequencies of the XCON, it has just been said that it can. The W7 becomes more passive as the frequency rises. Of course the best reason of all is the awesome price difference. :bigclap:

12w7 vs. xcon 12
Pretty Sure you can't buy a sub from that dot com and get JL to honor the warranty. The authorized dealers run the W7 at $840. Here's their site that talks about this http://mobile.jlaudio.com/jlaudio_pages.php?page_id=111 . It would be stupid to pay more than $100, IMO, on electrical devices of any kind and not get that protection from the initial defects that can occur. So for the real deal, warranted products the SSA is right now less than half the price on the 12. To M5: Wouldn't the xmax play a part in 20-40 hz range SQ a bit?

12w7 vs. xcon 12
Haven't heard the XCON but that don't mean that this isn't obvious. The XCON will be a better listening experience for sure. The W7 is awesome but I can't fathom the amount of control the motor on the XCON is going to have on that cone. It is just such a sick design and even more sick is the fact that you could almost buy 2 XCON's for the price of one JL W7 12. Absolute sickness. How do they do it?

upcoming install in a 2008 Tahoe
I second that. Had a jerk-off down the road from me who thought it was ok to just sit in his driveway and rattle everyone day or night. I don't mind the drive-by beating anytime of the day. It just makes it hard to concentrate or enjoy the nice and quiet of a summer day when someone pounds. I have enough beat to annoy but I try to keep it quiet until I'm moving at highway speeds. This same fool was beating in his drive one day and I walked down and asked if he wouldn't mind turning it down. He said he was tuning. I replied that he tunes alot and should seek professional help with it. He then stated that he would shut it off when he was done. I reminded him of the noise ordinance of 50 feet ( an ordinance that is a little over strict I think). He replies that he can do it because he's working on his system. I walked away and give my Blue buddy a call and he was there in minutes. Mind you I have never talked to this jerk before. He told the police that he would keep it turned down if we stopped bothering him. We being me and the 3 neighbors that were at my house when the police arrived. I laughed and told the police that I wouldn't press the matter for a ticket as long as I didn't have to listen it for more than the time it takes to pull up and get out of the car. The best part is my neighbor whom is actually closer to him is the judge that would have been presiding over the court he would have been summoned. He does not know this I guess. I try to be reasonable with people on this matter. I really think it would be drastic to just eliminate the whole realm but these a**holes will convince legislators everywhere to do just that if they don't respect people and the sleep/lifestyle habits of others. I even turn my system down at intersections to not annoy the others sitting there. I love music and I love having a good bass foundation. Just makes the whole experience that much better. Not to mention I had erractic sleep patterns due to being an on call worker. I never know when I will have to crash to be ready. Before I was laid off anyway. It just makes me mad when people think that everyone sleeps at the same time they do.
