Is my amp failing?
What are some of the issues you read about in regards to the V1 model?

Is my amp failing?
It is a V1 model of the 1200D. I bought it new from Jacob back in February of last year, installed it this past summer, then out of nowhere last week I was left with a trunk full of smoke and a car filled with the smell of burnt out components. When I first noticed the smell as I was driving along I assumed that someone was burning something outside and the smell was just coming in through my vents..........boy was I wrong. As soon as I stepped out of my car I smelled nothing but fresh air. Thinking that was kind of odd I decide to pop the trunk to which I was greeted with a haze of white smoke!!!!

Tell me about it man. My trunk still smells like burnt electrical components.........

Is my amp failing?
I got a chance to open up my 1200D and, as I had suspected from the smell of things, a component was blown. As can be seen in the pics below it appears that a cap blew and the resistors in the vicinity of the blown cap were fried. I am assuming this falls under the warranty.

Pics of what appears to be a blown cap and some fried resistors on the board of my SAE-1200D.

Is my amp failing?
I will do that as soon as I get a chance. For the meantime I went ahead and completely disconnected the power from it. Man I tell you a bad amp is the last thing I needed between interviewing, deciding on a job offer, or continuing on to grad school this last semester in college lol

Is my amp failing?
Last night it was. I disconnected it today when I was doing some preliminary troubleshooting so I don't know the current status. This morning I measured the impedance of my speakers and they seemed to be fine: -AA Havoc 2ohm DVC wired to 1ohm => 0.9ohm readout from multimeter -Image Dynamics Comp Set 4ohm => 3.6ohm readout from multimeter This morning I disconnected the remote turn on and signal cables from the SAE-1200D, assuming it was the culprit, but I left the power and ground plugged in. After driving to class this morning with only the 50.4 running my comp set the smell returned. My next course of action is to completely remove power from the SAE-1200D to isolate whether or not the smell is coming from the 50.4. I also have a Kinetik HC600 in the trunk of which the voltage was fine and there were no obvious signs of irregularities. Between classes it is hard to spend much time troubleshooting so I am just doing what I can throughout the day. All help is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks!!!! P.S. I have not adjusted my setup in a few months and things have been fine until recently.

Is my amp failing?
Last night as I was just listening to the radio as I was driving along and I began to notice an odd smell in my car. My volume was low, and I have not played my music loud in a while. Initially I thought maybe something was just coming through the vents outside. However, when I got home and popped my trunk I was greeted with a haze of white smoke!!!!! I am running two amps; an SAE-1200D and a SAX-50.4. Upon further investigation this morning I checked the impedance of all my speakers and they are what they should be and my voltages are correct at the amp. After letting the trunk air out a little bit I noticed that the smell seemed to be associated with the 1200D and not the 50.4 as a result of actually putting my nose to the amps and smelling them. I'm in a rush to get to class so I will provide more details on my setup later. I was just looking for some quick insight. Thanks, Thomas

Sundown 50.4 Crossover
Thanks man, this suggestion worked out great! This 50.4 is heads above the Kenwood eXcelon KAC-X40 that it replaced. Music is much more clean and defined.

Sundown 50.4 Crossover
Yes, I am going to be using all 4 channels. MLI65's will be running on channels 3/4. I have an ID comp set that will be running on channels 1/2. I may ditch the passive crossover that came with it and try my hand at active.

Sundown 50.4 Crossover
Yes you can do it with the 50.4. Great! How do I go about doing this? Would I simply set the channels in use to Full and adjust the HPF and LPF accordingly?
-
Sundown 50.4 Crossover
Is there anyway to achieve bandpass filtering???? For example if I am running a pair of MLI65's and I want to restrict them to frequencies between 70Hz-2.5kHz, is that possible with this amp or any other 4-channel? Thanks

Speaker whine from sub amp????
Ha ha. It's all good. Now I just need to get my hands on another pair of RCA's to try out.

Speaker whine from sub amp????
I got you man....calm down lol. I was not trying to be funny about anything.

Speaker whine from sub amp????
What is a good reputable brand of RCA's that you would recommend? I am currently using JL Audio, however they are not their top of the line model.

Speaker whine from sub amp????
Thanks for the advice on upgrading the engine and alternator grounds, but I have already done that. Does anyone have any experience with the aforementioned AudioControl devices (Matrix, Epicenter, Overdrive)????

Speaker whine from sub amp????
Once again, thanks for all of the replies. This weekend I did some investigating and testing. I tried the whole RCA ground thing to no avail, checked wiring, disconnected my antenna wire, etc. Still no results. The only way to get rid of the whine is to reduce the gain on the 1200D. The downside to this is not being able to get the output I desire by having the gain low enough to eliminate the whine. As a result of this my conclusion is that my RCA out voltage from my deck, Kenwood DNX-5120, is just too weak. What do you all think about AudioControl products such as the Matrix, or Overdrive, to increase the pre-out voltage to my amps?

Torn between 50.4 and 125.2
Are you saying I need 4-channels due to having 4 speakers, or because of tuning capabilities? In regards to rears, I have been hearing for a while that they are a not needed. I can understand this for someone driving a coupe or a pickup where the cabin space is smaller and the probability of someone riding in the back is slim. But when it comes to mid-full size sedans and SUV's I am at a loss on this concept, unless you do some kind of custom fabrication where you are running 2 or 3 sets of speakers up front. If someone cares to enlighten me I would be more than appreciative. Thanks

Torn between 50.4 and 125.2
My reasoning is because I would like some rear fill to "fill" out the sound and give the rear passengers a little more than just whats coming from up front. In addition to that my reasoning is based on the fact that I currently do not posses the time or skill, unfortunately lol, to go through the process of fabricating custom mounting positions to get optimum performance solely from a front stage. My car is an '08 Altima 3.5SE Sedan. I was thinking that putting a dedicated mid-bass driver in the rear doors vs full-range 6x9's in the rear deck might give me some better sound.

Torn between 50.4 and 125.2
Here is my situation. I am in the process of redoing my system and I am currently only running the Image Dynamics CTX65CS comp set up front. Next I plan on dropping a pair of Image Dynamics CX64 V.2 mid-bass speakers in my rear doors. Between the 50.4 and the 125.2, which do you think I can get the most performance out of? My thinking is that with the 50.4 I have more tuning options, and with the 125.2 I will have more power. Both sets of speakers are 4ohms. What do you think???? I know the 100.4 would be the better option, but I don't have the space to fit it nor do I want to spend that much more.

Speaker whine from sub amp????
Thanks for the replies!!!! I probably will not be able to get to this until the weekend, but I will post my findings.

Speaker whine from sub amp????
My amps are practically side by side, and yea I did not notice the whine until swapping the 1000D out for the 1200D. I am at a loss as to what the issue could be......
-
Speaker whine from sub amp????
I am currently running a Kenwood eXcelon KAC-x40 for my comp set and I have had no issues with any whine or hum coming through my comps. However, yesterday after swapping out my SAE-1000 for the SAE-1200 I now have a whine in my comps when I plug the RCA's into it. With the volume at 0 the whine is still there. I think it is odd that I am getting a whine in my comps when plugging the RCA's into my sub amp. When I remove the RCA's from the SAE-1200 the whine goes away completely. Any insight into this would be more than appreciated. Thanks!!!! Good Component Set & 6x9's????
Anyone????

Good Component Set & 6x9's????
Just looking for a little direction on a decent 6.5" component set, and maybe some 6x9's to match. They would be running off of a Kenwood eXcelon KAC-X40. I am currently running an Infinity Kappa series component set and 6x9's, and they are just too bright for me even with tuning on the amp and deck. In the past I have had success with Kenwood eXcelon speakers and silk dome tweeters, but I was just curious to know other good options within a $300 price range. My deck is a Kenwood DNX-5120, and my sub stage consists of a 12" AA Havoc running off of a Sundown SAE-1200D. This is all in a '08 Altima 3.5 SE. Thanks!!!!
