  1. Toggle switches to disable the different bands: I can kill the tweets, 4.5's, 7"ers, and subs all separately, run any combination... just subs and tweets, just mids, whatever at the flip of a switch!

    Why?

Toggle on the subs I can understand. Toggle on the tweeters with wideband midrange I can sort of understand. But why would you want to kill the midrange or midbass drivers?

  2. your vehicle has a resonate peak where it's loudest.

If you want to find that seal off your box and meter it.

What's that gonna prove? The box volume ported will be too big for sealed, the alignment would be WAY off. The concept behind using a sealed box to find vehicle resonance works, sorta. You have to have the optimal sealed box volume to give a flat response (in open air anyway), you also have to have the speaker in the same position, firing the same way. Another factor I've found is the louder you get, the more the frequency can change.

The sealed enclosure wouldn't necessarily need a flat response or be in a certain alignment as long as you had a method by which to reliably measure the enclosure both inside and outside of the vehicle. Doing this you would be looking for relative differences in response rather than absolute values.....the frequency with the greatest variance between interior and "anechoic" (outside using proper measuring techniques) measurements would be the peak frequency. You are probably right that as things become highly pressurized and resonating the frequency will change so it's not perfect, but it might help get someone in the ballpark and a starting point to fine tune from. SPL ain't my game though. And I realize this would be extreme overkill for answering the OP's question.

  3. I would ask them if the alternator is actually a specifically designed high output alt or simply a rebuilt OEM unit. The Infinity page doesn't say anything, but on the GM page it says "Using a Delco AD244 alternator, we install a heavier wound stator and higher amp rectifier and rotor to give these units more bottom end power and higher total amperage output." Which to me reads that they take an OEM alt and "upgrade" the minimum amount of parts.

Keep in mind this is a piece of marketing, but DC has a comparison on their website which would probably be relevant to give you an idea of the differences: Click Me

  4. The SA-8 would have more motor over the DCON but the DCON is an amazing sounding sub woofer. I have both and the SA-8 has more output with the pair to the ear.

The DCON 10" in a 1.33ft^3 enclosure tuned to 33hz sounds amazing in my truck and in the wife's Bonneville. The output is impressive but the sq is where it shines imo.

In his proposed enclosure and power the Dcon would have more output over pretty much the entire bandwidth than the SA-8.

  5. Let's say for example I get 2 amplifiers, one is rated a 1000w @ 4 ohm load and the other is rated 1000w @ 1 ohm. Would one amplifier use more current than the other theoretically? Or is 1000w the same expense no matter the impedance?? I know some other conditions affect this answer but for argument sake, lets assume they are exactly the same except for output at different loads...

You are asking the wrong question.

What you need to focus on when asking this question is amplifier efficiency rather than just the impedance of the load.

If both amplifiers were the same efficiency into those respective impedance loads, there would be zero difference in current draw.

What ibanender is likely eluding to is that most class D amplifiers will be more efficient at 4ohm than 1ohm, so the 4ohm impedance would likely result in less current draw. But the reason is because of the difference in efficiency, not impedance. It just so happens that efficiency is generally correlated with the impedance of the load the amplifier is driving. The same difference in current draw could occur between two different amplifiers of the same power driving the same load simply because of a difference in efficiency between the two amplifiers.

So, moral of the story.....current draw is directly related to efficiency, not load. Efficiency is generally correlated with the load (lower the load, lower the efficiency). But efficiency of different designs and amplifiers will be different, so driving a higher impedance load does not guaranty a higher efficiency when comparing two different amplifiers.

  6. i told him id be screwin myself out of 300w rated power

Which is actually pretty irrelevant for daily driving type of listening, unless you are also worried about numbers on a meter. The difference on music more than likely wouldn't even be audible, though you could measure the difference on a meter.

and more "real" power. then he says saz is rated at 1500 @ 14.4v so i brought up jacobs testing thread and proved that it does well over 1500 at 12.8.

Jacob's tests don't prove a whole heck of a lot, other than 90% of forum members misinterpret the information.

That said; by all means keep the Sundown if you are happy with it.

  7. The Sundown amps are rated at 12v, not 14v.

    ........

    Tested Voltage & THD : 14.4V & Less than 1% THD

According to the website they are rated at 14.4v. It's certainly possible they will output their rated power at 12V (though I've never seen any actual bench test results). It's also possible Jacob actually used 12V to come up with the power ratings and decided to list the rated voltage at 14.4v instead.

But the website and manual state 14.4V.

  8. All 3 of the tweeters 95Honda linked should be able to play pretty low (relatively speaking). All of them have an Fs in the 500-600hz range, so they should be able to handle 2khz or so so with ease. General rule of thumb is that you don't want to run a tweeter lower than 2x it's Fs. Obviously there's more to how low it will play than only it's Fs, but it's a good rule of thumb to use as a "quick reference" when comparing tweeters. If you have a shallower slope, plan on crossing the tweeter a little higher. Generally large format tweeters are going to be able to play lower than compact tweeters.

As for crossovers.....yes, the crossover in the headunit would be fine as long as it's has the appropriate xover slope and frequencies that you need.

  9. How is this the first install ever when "chris the man" claims to have 75sqft in his car already? Is this the "prototype" deadener or the actual product?

Either way the owner of Audio Technix and his minion have already proven themselves to be less than stand-up characters. I would never use nor recommend their product based solely on their behavior.

Business is better sent to someone worth sending business to.

  10. Apples to Grapes here? ...

    http://www.grapplefruits.com/

Grapples are excellent, the wonderful new flavor of Grāpple® brand apples. Imagine the sweet distinctive flavor of Concord grapes combined with the crispness of a fresh, juicy Washington Extra Fancy apple.

This makes them a perfect snack at home, at school, or at sport functions. Their glowing expression will say it all...

    WOW! Pass me another one!

    Yum. :rofl2:

Reminds me of...... They go boom like so!

(it's sad that most of the people on here won't get this joke anymore :( )

  11. Oh that's right, the high school drama website. I'm not hip.

    Naw man, that's Myspace. :P

    :werd_msword:

Facebook is where housewives and ex-wives go to bitch about their personal lives and relationship issues so that all of their FB "friends" side with them and make them feel vindicated and empowered.

So I guess really you were right Ryan. It's high school drama perpetuated by middle aged women :P

  12. I would try to stick with car audio marketed wire for no other reason than I've found them to be more flexible than the home audio type of wire. Those Dayton RCA's are great unless you need to make a tight bend near the connector. I have $75+ worth of the shorter lengths in my garage that I couldn't use in my install because the cable wasn't flexible enough to fit how I wanted/needed.

  13. What are the model number for your current drivers, and what enclosure are they in?

It's possible that simply building a new enclosure for your current subwoofers will get you closer to your goals. If it's possible to get better performance with a different enclosure with your current subwoofers, that would be the cheapest and easiest route. Unless you just want something new to play with as well......which is fine too.

  14. Too broad of a question and how the company and individual defines what is "spl rated".

For some drivers it's not a good idea. On others it would be fine. Others still may not suffer from the potential for physical damage, but simply not reproduce music very well.

It just depends on the specific driver.

  15. You know everything, everybody else is wrong, you're right,

    Glad we agree :)

In regards do the first sentence, how are you measuring distortion? 10% distortion from a sub is not only common, but accepted as "clean" by the human ear. Again, how are YOU measuring distortion? Not on paper, not a lab test, YOU in a car, measuring it.

Measuring a W7 in my car is irrelevant. I don't need to measure it in my car unless I want to know how it responds in my particular vehicle in that particular enclosure on my power with my system settings. None of this defines the objective qualities of the W7 itself. "On paper in a lab" is the only meaningful way to objectively measure and evaluate a driver. I know you understand this (or atleast I think you do, I suppose I could be wrong). Despite our disagreements, I don't take you for a dummy. I'm less than impressed by your debating skills, but I know you're not stupid. This however is another one of your sidetracking techniques because you can't directly rebut my comments. You aren't going to be able to find anything indicating the W7 is an objectively poor driver, because it's not. It's a well designed driver. It's performance attributes, pricing or perceived value might not fit your, or someone else's, personal performance preference or goals. But that doesn't make the W7 a bad driver, just not the driver for every situation.

With that, I'm done with this conversation. I've clearly explained my points, and the conversation will quickly either head no where or become circular. Both of which are a waste of time.

  16. "It does exist"... I have 75sqft of it in my car dumbass.

The owner referenced a prototype and then a product they are coming out with. Not that is out. Perhaps a misunderstanding. Either way, he seems to be shooting himself in the foot pretty early in the business plan with his poor methods of promoting his product. And having cronies like yourself certainly don't help the situation any. Turning off customers and recommendations before the business really gets going is a great method for failure. Because I know I sure as hell won't be buying any now, nor will I ever recommend the product based solely off of the you and the owner's behavior.

Great job. Keep up the good work. Losing sales is a good part of any business model.

Trashing a competitor because you simply can not compete with audiotechnix pricing. In fact no body can. A product of such high quality and such a low price that can not be reckoned with. Intimidated are you? I'm sorry that you must bring it to this.

You must have me confused with someone else. I have no product for sale and affiliation with no business.

I'm leaving this argument not to return. Im sure col will do the same.

    Thank god.

If you want to bring it even further past that... Than we can go there trust me, my biceps at bigger than your waist.

.....Sorry to sac tap your pathetic unmanned comments with my shear masculinity and ability to whoop all of your guys asses.

My dick's bigger. There, glad we have that out of the way.

But argue with me. Not cthedinger.

    LOL....

  17. The actual product we are coming out this is way better than the prototype, since the prototype product works amazingly it gives customers an idea of what they can expect from the actual product we are coming out with.

So right now you are "selling" vaporware?

I never said I designed the product. After seeing all the samples, comparing customer service, and looking at companies price I got an idea for a product that I wanted. I am a customer service guy, thats what I do best.

So you didn't get an idea for a product, you got an idea for a price point then had someone else design a product (that you didn't understand) to fit that price point. At present, said product doesn't actually exist.

Your marketing plan so far consists of promoting a product that doesn't actually exist and that you don't actually understand, making apparently outrageous claims about it's performance then deleting those comments, and finding reasons to trash competing products such as the picture of RaaMat you posted earlier? That's pretty tactless and demonstrates terrible business ethic. It also helps if you type in English. Your grammar and spelling is atrocious for an individual promoting a product and business.

Sounds like a solid plan you have going there.

  18. There were other high displacement drivers out there for 3 years before the W7 came out, so they weren't even "one of the first".

Reading comprehension. I said high displacement low distortion drivers on the mainstream market.

Either way, you are sidetracking the conversation, as usual. Your first sentence proves my point. Consumers dictate appropriate pricing for the market. JL can offer the driver for sale at whatever price they want. If the W7 were overpriced, it wouldn't sell. That simple. You didn't actually argue against this point, you simply tried to make up reasons of why it is so. You can argue why it sells all day long, but that's irrelevant. It's another one of your "I can't support my argument so I'm going to take the conversation in the direction I want it to go" tactics. The fact is, it does sell. Consumers find value in the W7 at it's available pricing. That is what's relevant. If it were overpriced, it wouldn't have sold much less been on the market at it's current price point for almost a decade. I find it very hard to believe that the only people purchasing this driver for a decade are uninformed marketing driven mindless drones. Are there some? Sure. But is that the entire customer base? No. Are there valid reasons for paying extra "for a name"? Yes. Is the W7 going to be for everyone? No. Is it expensive? Yes. But that doesn't mean it's overpriced. If it were overpriced, if consumers didn't see the value in the product at it's pricing level, it wouldn't have sold much less been sustainable in the market for almost a decade. That simple. You can't argue this point. You can argue why it sells (as you tried to do), you can argue it's price vs performance compared to competitors......but those are side arguments. The simple point is, consumers wouldn't buy it if they felt it were overpriced. JL priced it appropriately for the market. If you are not a buyer at it's pricing level, that's fine. You can have valid personal reasons for not purchasing a W7. Not everyone is going to see the value in the W7 at that pricing. And that is fine. But that does not make it overpriced.

Second; I never said the W7 was the best or only driver in the market. I simply said it's not hype. They have been verified for a decade now to be well performing drivers. That simple. You can't argue this point. They are objectively good drivers. I did say "one of the first", which they were. There were not many drivers in the mainstream market that offered both that level of displacement and low distortion/linear BL. But this is again a side argument to the main point, so I don't want to linger on it (though I'm sure this is what you will focus on, rather than the main point, in an effort to make yourself feel "right"). The main point is that the W7 is an objectively well performing driver.

So, you can either respond with something relevant to the conversation (which doesn't seem to fit your M.O.), or don't bother responding at all.

  19. Also the reason I asked all these companies for samples is because I truly wanted to know what all of them are like. Then I got an idea for a product that I liked and thats where it all started.

How did evaluating samples give you get an "idea" for a product you'd like when you didn't even understand how that product works?

Wouldn't need to understand how a certain product functions before you get an "idea" for a product design?

You had to ask Don how CLD worked after you were promoting your product. So, how did you go about designing the product and it's performance aspects before you understood how CLD even functioned?

  20. Yes, the slopes will combine. If you have exactly the same crossover frequency on both 2nd order filters the slope will be -24db/oct and the signal will be down -6db at the crossover frequency as opposed to -3db.

This is exactly what a Linkwitz-Riley crossover filter is. Two cascaded 2nd order filters.

If the xover frequencies are staggered, things are little different...but the filter slopes will still combine.
