What happens when you physically push on the driver in the center of the cone with your hand when it's not in the enclosure? Any scraping/etc?

My stereo has always sounded better at night. I've always assigned it to the fact that the view of the drivers and other interior cues/dimensions are diminished, but I don't know for certain. I also usually work on speaker aiming and tuning with my eyes closed, I can concentrate better that way but the stage does seem to improve slightly (very slightly) when I'm not focused on the speakers themselves. One competitor, Mic Wallace I think, started covering his rear windows with egg crate foam for competition. Originally he tried it to see if it made a difference in response due to reflections off the windows. The difference in actual response was minimal but he seemed to score better on stage width afterwards because the front of the car seemed physically "wider" having the rear darkened by the foam over the windows. Other competitors used to put dots on the windshield for competition so that the judges eyes would draw the staging cues to the location of the dots. Others would put unpowered tweeters in the pillars to perceptually raise the sound stage. Not sure how effectively any of it worked, I don't know any before/after scores. But people have been messing with visual cues for decades. I would agree with Tire. It's purely a placebo effect, but there can potentially be slight differences in perception based on visual cues. In my install this summer I intended to have all of the drivers installed in such a manor that you can't physically see them, just to see if it made any difference and with my install plan it shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish (which was the main factor). As suggested, before rebuilding spend some time listening with your eyes open and closed and see if you think you can perceive any difference.

So, break through #1 was to literally directly copy your leading competitor? Is that really a break-through? And is the Term-lab algorithms protected IP that you are infringing upon? How useful is acoustically measuring THD in an automobile when everything in the vehicle is going to be resonating, skewing the results to the point of uselessness for an accurate THD measurement of the system itself ? Also not sure why this is such a break through, plenty of consumer-level (and many free) measurement software programs will measure THD. How is this any different?

Power handling IS NOT a power requirement. Two completely unrelated issues. How much space do you have to work with?

If you wanted that level of clarity, you would spend more time perfecting the installation before you even thought about touching the EQ. You need to fix the installation first, which could be the source of your issues.

How many amplifiers are you running? If you were running two amps, for example, you might be able purchase THIS and THIS which combined is 46A but only $100, 20% cheaper than the one you linked. Good thing about PE also is if you wire them up and run into noise issues, you should be able to return them pretty easily. And their tech support is awesome, if you wanted to call & discuss the supplies with them.

You do realize the "as clean as a class A/B" is just a marketing phrase, correct? So that's all it took to cure you of your bias against class D, a marketing phrase that caught your attention? If the frequency response, noise and the distortion of both amps is within inaudible tolerances....then the class D is every bit as "clean" as the class A/B....and there are hundreds of class D amps on the market that meet that criteria. Studio background has nothing to do with it.

Wish I could plan my taxes that well. My wife's income fluctuates so much due to her not working so frequently, and her varying amounts of unemployment which I have to pay taxes on at the end of the year that if I would end up fucking myself and owe a shit ton at the end of the year. No joke. My truck had some trans shudder and my dad (a mechanic) put some shudder fix in it....cleared it up in less than 100 miles and no problems since. I don't know what brand we used, got it from Napa I think.

How are the speakers installed? I've never had a set of 6.5" speakers that couldn't handle an ~80hz HPF with a decent slope at a pretty stout listening level.

Guy I know had an MS8 setup running L7, but it wasn't well implemented in his install and I much preferred stereo in that particular installation. I've had fleeting thoughts of trying it with my MS8 but would rather have the benefits of active than passive w/ L7. Chances are good you could get what you were looking for without having to result to the added cost and complexity of surround sound.

Which is the reason, for example, the JBL MS8 has ProLogic7. Not because it was designed to be an in-vehicle media center, but because the engineers @ JBL felt it offered one of the better solutions for improved imaging. But what good does that do to a signal recorded in stereo? The MS8 takes a stereo source, applies it's Logic7 algorithms and extrapolates out 5.1/7.1 surround sound based on the original source. Information that would have been "center" imaged based on the stereo recording is reproduced by the center channel, etc.

Then you have absolutely zero to worry about regarding either cancellation or standing waves. Wavelengths are way too long compared to the dimensions you are dealing with. Angled baffling, subwoofer placement, etc....none of this matters for you.

With a strapped pair of amps, each amplifier effectively "sees" half of the load. If you wire the subs in series-series for a final 4ohm load, then your final load is 4ohm. No changing that. Now, since the amplifiers are strapped each amplifier will "see" half of the 4ohm load. So each amplifier will effectively be operating at 2ohm, and will output power accordingly. If the amplifiers are 1500w @ 1ohm each, then they are probably around 750w @ 2ohm. So you would have a total of 1500w of power since each amplifier would be operating at 2ohm and outputting 750w, which is a combined 1500w. From above, each amp would effectively "see" .5ohm but the actual load is 1ohm. If you had two 1500w @ 1ohm amplifier strapped into a 2ohm load then yes, the total power would be 3kw.

Just because it might sound subjectively good now, doesn't mean it couldn't sound better I've got some other issues with the install. But I'm sure Randall is happy so I figured it wasn't worth the argument....

There isn't a minimum amount of power for the driver. There will be a minimum amount of power required to reach a certain level of output at a certain frequency, and that will depend on the enclosure as well as your environment. It's impossible to completely predict unless you know the power compression behavior of the driver and have graphed the response of your environment, but any enclosure modeling software is going to be able to predict output vs power in an idealized scenario, before those two factors are accounted for. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? What are your goals?

Talking about potential cancellation is meaningless unless you also include frequency and distance/dimensions. Also, angling the baffle will affect standing waves/reflections within the enclosure but isn't going to do too much about cancellation from the drivers (if any even exists). But as above, standing waves is a wavelength vs distance/dimension issue so you can't discuss standing waves without knowing those two items.

The amp would work exactly the same amount. The amount of actual "gain" an amplifier applies is generally a fixed amount. All the input sensitivity (gain knob) does is adjust the level of the input signal so that after the fixed amount of gain is applied the amplifier is (ideally) generating full power without clipping. That said you generally want the gain in the system as early as possible, so yes you want to maximize the range of volume you have available at the headunit and go with a lower gain setting at the amplifier. This will give you more control over the volume for tracks recorded at varying levels and the music won't get as loud as quickly giving you more general control of the system volume level. The SLA simply adjusts the level of the output of sources compared to the radio (IIRC). So if you set the gain with the SLA at +8 on CD then the preamps will probably clip earlier in the volume range, so take that into consideration. I would leave it on the lowest setting you can handle. Personally I would use the HPF in the HU so it's easier for you to set since you can set it from the drivers seat while listening to the speakers rather than running back & forth to the amp. If you find yourself unhappy with the options after listening to them then switch to the amp's xover, but the HU should be sufficient.
