Welcome to the IHoP
Thanks Can I pick your physics knowledge about turntable stands? With the damn springy floor that I've got in the apartment...going wall-mounted would be ideal if not for damaging the wall Of course you can. OK, given my really less-than-perfect environment (3rd floor, carpeted floors, no wall mounting available), how would you suggest building a stand to best prevent outside vibrations from affecting the 'table? I've seen roughly two camps on this, one seems to be using a very light stand that's spiked to the floor, the other involves just getting as much mass as possible and putting the turntable on top of that.

I've seen Mc meters being sold as external units, even then they're not too cheap...- Welcome to the IHoP
I should just put an ad on Audiogon and see who bites. Cary Audio's got a pair of monos that I've been looking at, and of course there's the Fi monos...but I don't think I want to pay more per tube for less power, and zinc cathodes don't look anywhere near as cool- Welcome to the IHoP
Could just buy mine and have a finished pair- Welcome to the IHoP
Nah, not yet...next week I'll crank them up- Welcome to the IHoP
They need sanding and trim to hide the edges of the ply (will do on Saturday)...but here's what they look like now And yeah...they pass the knuckle test pretty well.- 1200 RMS but no D Class amps
Actually, I haven't noticed an issue with FM reception in my install, and if it was there, I'd definitely notice. Now, the noise floor sucks for single-sideband and AM reception when the Tantrums are on. Almost unusable from 20 meters (14MHz) up to 6 meters (50MHz). So there's definitely broadband noise there, it's just the noise-rejecting capabilities of FM keep most of it out of the receiver's front end.- Welcome to the IHoP

I would think red lights would be easier on the eyes at night than blue ones.- N00bish computer questions.
Thanks, got some good info out of here. I didn't know about XP having a limit on RAM it'll recognize. I guess I'll wait for the price on the Seagate 1TB drive to come down a little- Cool New Forum.
SPL competition subforum but no SQ competition?- N00bish computer questions.
I'm going to be getting some money in shortly, and I figured I'd put it towards my music computer to finally get it where I'd want... As it stands, I've got a Dell Poweredge 600SC running XP. 2.4GHz P4, 512MB cache, 256MB RAM. Hard drive right now is a Western Digital 250GB IDE, 8MB cache. Obviously, that's nowhere near enough storage for me. I was thinking about taking advantage of that guy that's selling WD 250GB drives over on CA.com for pretty good prices, Sean's mentioned before that the 2MB cache of those shouldn't cause a problem when searching/during playback...I have three open bays, what would be the easiest way to combine three drives so it looks like one ~750GB volume? I assume some kind of RAID controller, any opinions of what RAID config. and what brand of controller? The RAM on this machine is upgradeable to 4GB. I take it I should max it out? Or somewhere in between...RAM for it is dirt cheap as it's not commonly used in "consumer" desktops. Also planning on going to a 20-22" LCD monitor, any suggestions on brands to look for? Thanks in advance- AQ HDc3 comments
Nothing wrong with paper cones. Some of the best sounding systems I've heard have been with Altec woofers, and those things are about as unassuming as you can get. I know you're joking, but I don't see what point you're trying to make...- Something for you SQ Guys!
Meh.- Bored with icon
What do you mean, bored? What's the Icon not doing for you?- AQ HDc3 comments
What's reasonable, though Most of the reviews I've seen from them are along the lines of "it gets loud yo".- AQ HDc3 comments
I think if you're concerned about SQ at all these aren't the woofers for you.- Welcome to the IHoP

Tomorrow, hopefully it warms up a little so I can run the planer outside without freezing...because right now my options are either freezing my balls off outside or spending an entire weekend with the shop-vac picking up pine shavings from every little crevice of the basement...neither of which are particularly appealing to me...- Welcome to the IHoP
Well, sanding did make them a lot less noticeable, now they're to the point where I can't feel them running a fingernail over it...I guess once I get a few coats of sanding sealer and stain on it it'll be impossible to tell from more than an inch away anyway...- Welcome to the IHoP
Happen to know any tricks for getting rid of scratches on ply? Picked some up from the base when I was flushing the front baffle...I was going at it lightly with 320grit on a random orbit, but I'm afraid I'll go through the front veneer if I go too far down, in which case I'll be le pissed...- Hexibase Box Design
Without complete dimension markings it's pretty hard to say whether it'll be a good choice... Man, I need to start designing regular ported boxes with Sketchup, slap a logo on it and gain a cult following...- One of the reasons why i love Audio
