PR box for a car set-up??
There's really no need in a car. The big advantage of PR's is to be able to get the enclosure to peak extremely low, while keeping the overall size of the enclosure smaller than a traditional bass reflex because the port lengths would get massive. IMO, they're not really needed in a car because you have a lot of cabin gain down below 30Hz anyway, so having a subbass setup that has a peak down there is only going to make things sound very bottom-heavy. In a room, however, it's a different story...

Blowing up my car with pure sound (2 years to go!!)
Depends on whether or not Tommy K. shows up that day Much louder with less cone area, and less power, I believe.

upgrade from original plan?
Digital Designs Z series, in an older Volvo. World record scores don't happen because of the equipment, though, they happen because of the countless number of hours and days that go into testing and refining it I've always thought the idea of comparison sub shopping on Youtube was idiotic. Because it's all about the enclosure, and there are a multitude of ways to make a subwoofer move a lot and not have impressive output. And there are a lot of ways to have a lot of output without a lot of cone travel.

Not with the back seat still in place, no. And walling off your first car right away would be a horribly bad idea, IMO. Get a few years of driving experience under your belt, so you can learn to handle something with a different weight distribution...I don't know how much experience you already have behind the wheel at 14, I know I had a fair amount by then, but at my HS there were plenty of people that couldn't keep their cars on the road without anything blocking their rear visibility or changing the way it handles.

To be honest, it'd be a shame if you're deaf by the time you graduate HS. I like things loud too sometimes, don't get me wrong - but driving around with that much is not going to end up well...

MDF or birch
I went with ply for the BIB's because I was staining them, and I didn't feel like painting MDF... The size of the enclosure might also play a role in what you choose - real birch ply doesn't come in 4x8 sheets, but smaller square sheets...so if you have something with larger sides than that...

SSA Icons- 2x10 ported or 1x12 ported or 2x10 sealed?
IMO, the Icons run fine off of 400-500W

KnuKonceptz Cables
My apartment setup uses a lot of the Knu Krystal mono interconnects...you really can't beat the build quality for the price. At least they aren't run by idiots, like Monster

SSA Icons- 2x10 ported or 1x12 ported or 2x10 sealed?
I'd prefer the two 10's sealed. If a Type R is your reference, these will shatter it, easily

Given the right conditions, yeah.

Welcome to the IHoP
Talk to people around the world, at least with the big one. Also a pretty good source of first-hand news...

solder
Given a choice I prefer 95% tin/5% silver solder, but it's not needed for power terminals. The most common mix (at least in the US, where lead-free RoHS compliance hasn't happened yet) is 60% tin/40% lead, rosin-core solder.

My reading for today... http://www.w8ji.com/mobile_and_loaded_antenna.htm Net result - big antenna going on the van. Real big. The 9-foot whip isn't tuning worth a crap below 7MHz. I thought I'd be able to tune 160 meters through 6 on one antenna, but it's not looking like that's possible...might have to do 160-40 on one and 20-6 on the other, would remove the pesky problem of the tuner going apeshit on 6 meters because 9 feet is near a halfwave... Antenna physics just suck. No doubt. Might be in the market for a new battery as well, I don't think the Yellow Top is holding a charge like it once did...time to modify the battery tray methinks.- i wish our president had the balls to say this
That role is getting quickly phased out. It's hard to police a country that has your balls in a vice, and increasingly, we have ours in many. For example, I thought the call to boycott the Olympics in China were pretty silly. They hold so much of our currency that if we actually pissed them off, it'd make the inflation we have now look like chickenshit... If nothing else changes in this country, we're going to have the rude shock of waking up and realizing that the rest of the world simply doesn't need us anymore. We'll be written out. Irrelevant. Placed aside. And the scary thing is, I don't think people here will even wake up to that fact until it's already happened. Is anyone actually that deluded to believe that? I don't think complete isolationism in the vein of feudal Japan - or in the modern world, North Korea - is a viable option, but there seem to be a lot of countries out there that can sustain their GDP's without having to resort to their military as the solution for their problems.- Memorial Day
I have a massive amount of respect for anyone in the armed services. That respect doesn't extend, however, to whoever's coming up with policy decisions lately. The first half of that letter is pretty galling, IMO...I think I'd have a lot more pride in America if we took as much effort in diplomatic efforts as we did in military ones.- DIY RCA's
The ones that came with Knukonceptz Karma series cables. What's weird is that the Krystal series connectors are a lot easier to work with. Unless you're coming up with custom end combos (TRS on one end, RCA on the other, that sort of thing), it's hard to come out on top economically building your own cables. By the time you've bought good connectors, you're over the price of what you'd be paying for a good preassembled cable. The only way to compete with that kind of economy of scale is if Dave, Ramos, you & I all chipped in for a massive order of connectors and we just used that if any of us needed cables. Which actually isn't a bad idea...- HELLO!
This place is even more intolerant of that, FYI. I don't hate you because I don't know you at all yet, but do something like that and I'd probably do the same thing- HELLO!
Just curious, what did you do to get banned from ROE? I didn't think anyone could get banned from there, at least the old incarnation of it- Damping Factor/Slew Rate/Muddy Sound Question
I'd go on Madisound and just browse Read some reviews on Zaphaudio.com, but I'd look at all the drivers I could in the price range. I don't think I'd buy anything until I had the vehicle there to take measurements.- Damping Factor/Slew Rate/Muddy Sound Question
I wouldn't worry about an amp's DF, to be honest.- time to upgrade highs
IIRC, the onboard Xover functionality of the 9855 is the same as in my 9835, except with the addition of that godawful Glide Touch...if that's the case, it's more than enough to get going with a simple 2-way active setup. The 5-band parametric EQ isn't quite as nice as separate L/R channel EQ's, but it's enough for a start.- Welcome to the IHoP
The one today I think beat that, from the time they walked down the aisle to when the photos were done must have been inside of a half hour. Always better than waiting around for hours...- Whats the best sub out there at the moment.
Exactly. Even if there was such a thing as a "best sub", it would be meaningless by itself, I'd worry about other things well before that. It's covering such a tiny fraction of a percent of the total bandwidth... - Welcome to the IHoP
