Fine Woodworking
I build things out of wood. I'm tired to building subwoofer enclosures. I'm tired of building coffee tables, end tables, grandfather clocks, cigar boxes, pens, bowls, desks, etc. Anyone else have any brilliant ideas for a good project? I'm about to get started on something, but my house doesn't need any more useless clutter that just sits around. I thought of a coffee table with a subwoofer enclosure in it ... I don't have an amp to power it with so forget it. Thought of a poker table ... would get used for a few weeks and then put in the basement with everything else, so forget it. Bookcase? TV cabinet? Already have a cabinet and I can't read. - Steve

Awesome As I mentioned before I used two 9515's with two VR2000D's in 14 cubes. I think you'll enjoy it - Steve

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa ... You're not 16. You didn't just get your license. You know what you're talking about; and you didn't spend your parents money. Why the heck do you have one of those ? Enjoy it, Kent. I think you might like the XBL2. - Steve

Duh ... gotta share the chit out of the person beside you. I think I'm guilty of wanting to build something cool ... and something I don't have is a HT setup. Unless you have some other briliant idea for something I could make out of wood that I don't already have - Steve

I won't watch movies through it ... well, maybe the odd one or two. It'll just mainly be for music purposes. And video games - Steve

Wonder if it's possible to use the crossovers out of the JBL three ways I have ... probably not though, unless you used the exact same speakers. Crossovers = teh ghey. Honestly ... just thinking about the crossovers pisses me off. I think I'd be happy with just two main towers and my subwoofer, to be honest. Surround, eh ... yeah it's cool ... and I may as well do it right the first time. I got to thinking, "Why do I want to do a HT setup?" ... my answer ... I just really want to construct a few nice pieces of fine woodworking without making another goddamn desk or table. I really don't care about filling them with speakers now, that'll come in the summer or later on. My thought process is all over the map. - Steve

Steve vs Home Audio
I've got an old school record player, Sony 100 disc changer, an old AKAI amp (from what, the '70's?), and a pair of JBL 3-ways. It sucks. So ... as some of you know, I do fine wood working in my spare time (coffee tables, china cabinets, cigar boxes, gun cabinets, pens, bowls, anything out of wood). I don't need another table in my home. What I do need, are some towers and subwoofer enclosure so I can eventually throw in some speakers and my uberwoofer. I'd love to make some enclosures out of a nice mahogany, eastern maple, oak, ash, anything really. I don't know chit all about HT. So I have to break it down real simple so I can understand it. I was thinking about two tall side towers, and center enclosure (center channel?), and then the subwoofer enclosure. Suggest anything else? I don't know how many speakers and what size to put in each tower ... I've seen between 2-6 mids in each tower ... 6 won't work, since I really don't want to spend a lot of money later on plugging speakers in them. So I was thinking perhaps a mid or two (5.25", 6.5", 8"?) in each tall tower, along with a single tweeter in each. Perhaps go with a 6.5, 5.25 or 4, and a tweet in each? I don't know, I'm looking for suggestions here. Airspace of the towers needs to be decided. I'd rather make them big because I can always add material to the inside of them later on depending on the speakers I choose. As you can tell, I'm only in the beginning stages here. I'd just like to build some nice towers and sub enclosure to get a head start on this. Sorry for the lengthy post, hard for me to organize my thoughts. All suggestions welcome - just keep it simple please. - Steve

Honestly it seems like that is the only productive thing to do over there now. And I don't know just how productive that is ... more enjoyable for me, anyways. - Steve

RE's new sub
Yeah, no kidding. While their subs are built to take abuse (or so it seems), I'm sure someone will find a way to blow one up. - Stev

Different cone materials, better sound?
Talk to Laine about it ... I questioned the choice of certain cone materials and he explained it quite well. If I took the uberwoofer and changed the current cone out for a poly or paper or titanium cone with the same Mms and all, I don't think I'd notice the difference. If the rest of the driver is designed properly, cone material shouldn't be a huge factor ... I'm not 100% sure, so don't listen to me. I think it's a bigger factor with midranges than subs. As long as it's stiff enough I guess. Could take to Mike (SoundSplinter) about it too ... since I'm sure he had his reasoning behind choosing the cone he did. EDIT ~ Just found this. - Steve
