Dubstep
I hope this isnt a stupid question but here it goes... I have watched a good amount of videos on clipping a signal and what to look for on a o-scope (square waves). I was just thinking what if the producer makes the waves square in production? I know a lot of dubstep artists do this. I do listen to it on my system and some djs / artists do make good low bass. Just wondering if this will just amplify the clipping of the already square signal made in production and damage my system (like clipping any other signal). <- go to about 1:40 to about 2:04 to see what I mean. He will show the signal...examples: <-- bass is WAY squared off in this songhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnKw236ZQkA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0QznJ2cjKg

How to figure out a song...
ah HA! thank you! with that help i found Bass Hz analyzer program?? - SSA Car Audio Forum it says that the song peaks at 31hz... which is where my box is tuned at. But to my ear when I play " " on that same album, which also hits 31hz, it doesnt seem to hit nearly as hard. I wonder why that is...

How to figure out a song...
I have been searching around now for a good 30 minutes on how to figure out the bass in a song. I know you use some program and play the song through it. You then select a little bit of the audio stream and analyze it somehow and it will show how low the bass gets... (I am trying to figure out the bass line in song. When it drops to the second lowest, I have never heard my car rattle so much nor my woofer get so loud. The first bass "hit" is at 34.5 seconds. And the bass hit at 37.5 seconds I need to filter out. I see the speaker move for it but cant hear anything)

AA SMD 15" woofer
Alright I shall try that. May be more expensive but ill see. Right now I am throwing a 3500D at it. EDIT: I was thinking of keeping the box a bit smaller (4 cuFt) and strapping another 3500D to it. Not sure yet though.

AA SMD 15" woofer
Hey guys, Just wondering if anybody has gotten to test out the new SMD woofer. I was thinking of selling my current lvl 5 15" dc woofer and getting a SMD 15. As of right now my trunk is pressed for space and I cannot give the level 5 the room it needs. Well I can but then I run into other problems. Looking at the SMD 15" specs it looks like it recommends a 2-4 cuFt box. As of right now, my level 5 is in a 3.5cuFt box and I was told to rebuild it to at least a 4.5 cuFt box. Well I can split the difference and probably get louder with this new sub. Also, building a box the biggest recommended space makes it better in spl competitions (which I want to do really bad). Just looking for some input and this is just an idea I may do later in the summer...

4 mw spl shows in minnesota!! Click here for info!
Hell man I woud love to come and bang with you but I sitll need moer work done in my car and at the rate im going I wont be done until next year. I want to re build my box and put some sort of tuning slider in there. I also need help cleaning up the wiring in the trunk and make it somewhat sexy. Only problem is is my experience is damn near zero with building systems and fitting 50 pounds work of shit in a 20 pound bag (or in this case a 4cuFt box in a trunk and still be able to toss shit back there).

Smell and strange dust
Just wanted to say hey guys, long time to talk to. Been super busy and that first vid I posted was a pos, second coming soon! Ok now on topic -- When I first got my system running I noticed there was a smell to it. Not a bad smell but just something strange; best I can describe it is the smell of a fresh built, just turned on computer. The reason why I relate it to this is because I just re-built my computer today and notiecd this is how it smells. I have never smelled burning nor have I ever heard the woofer "bottom out". The excursion looks alright to my knowledge for the lowest song I have put at it. I do like to ride around though with the volume up pretty high, sometimes the highest I ever want to go for a song or two. Now I have felt the magnet (by touching the dust cap) right after playing the woofer at max volume for me, its warm but in my opinion nothing too bad. I mean my cell phone sitting in my pocket for an hour or two gets hotter. Anyway this smell -- is there something to be worried about? I have checked all the connections and I would say those are the hottest parts of the entire systen. Nothing has melted and the amps are still cool to the touch. This smell has always been around sense I have put this system in. It usually comes after a few songs (depending on volume and where I got my knobs at) but never gets worse. My guess is its just the amps (starting) to warm up. (maybe I havent pushed my system hard enough if the amps are not even warm yet). With this dust as well. I noticed that the curled ends (at the very edge of the speaker) are getting this strange white dust on it. Its not hitting the back of the seat or anything so I have no idea about this. I just kind of ignored it because the speaker inspected by eye looks likes its still bran new. Other than posting here, I have not seen or heard of anybody reporting this. Really thinking about it now I think it may be something to do with the temp sound deadoning i tossed in there.

HID Lights
I only see the golf version of the vw and not the passat.. I will keep on looking around though.

HID Lights
I have noticed over the past year and a half that the stock lights on a 2003 vw passat are TERRIBLE. So after looking around the best headlight I can get (what I am told) are the HID lights 1200K lights (kind of a blue tint). I think those lights with the little blue of a tink would be pretty nice and would be a huge improvement. Anyway I was just looking to see if anybody has any experience with these lights and how it worked out. I wentt to the dealer and got a quote of 600/per light + labor. I was like yeah right and moved on. I called up a company that polishes lights and he said he could probably get them for around 300/per light if I knew somebody that would install them. Now I was googling around and I found this website. I havent bothered to call them but I am just curious if this is all what I need. The second thing that pops into my mind is that this is a huge difference (200 TOTAL + shipping) than what two other people gave me. I was reading that there are true and nontue HID lights and I am thinking these may be the untrue ones. Any suggestions? comments? ideas of where else to look? Thanks in advanced...

Songs to bump to
Well I would like to say thanks for everybody that helped me out. Anyway I am trying to get a list of good songs to play on my system. The front end can actually keep up with the woofer for the most part. Here is a list of songs that seems to hit the "sweet" spot on my system. Its a 3.5 cuFt box tuned to about 31.5hz (I am actually think now I tuned too low. Maybe this summer I will fix it). Any suggestions of songs to try would be awesome! Flow Rida - Finally Here - Jump - Gotta Get It - Shone - ROOTS Slim Thug - Boss of all Bosses Durrough - - <- Probably the loudest I can get my system to is this song - - - <- SUUUPER low.Anyway, suggestions? I will be getting a movie put up as soon as I can.

yeah man that 50.4 is treating me very well. I don't believe it but the speakers I have can keep up (somewhat) with my woofer. I still haven't tried to push my woofer yet though because I don't know how much is too much. I have been having other problems lately with work and whatnot so I have not been able to really dial the amp(s) to what they can really do. Maybe sometime next week? And a video? not sue but I don't want to promise something and not be able to get it done. Also, does anybody know a easy way to see how low the bass is in a song?

So what do you guys think? I will try and post a video later. Also, I have the subsonic filter set at 28hz and my box is tuned to 31.5. Is that too low?

ALRIGHT! here we go. I just have been suuuper busy lately working and finals are here (i hate college). I know its a wiring mess right now but things will be fixed probably this weekend! Angle from drivers side back door. Better angle. Small amp FINALLY mounted to back of seats (had to use a screw for metal and a self tapping one for that matter) Picture of the wiring mess from the passenger side back door. EDIT: 1) The amp is not just sitting there (just realized it looks that way). It is mounted to the frame of the car. 2) The white around the edges of the woofer is silicone, Ill cut it off when I repaint 3) I just realized I didn't get a good shot of the port.

Trunk will be sealed off soon, battery is in. I just upped the amp gain a little bit (only at about 1/3 now). the subsonic filter i would say is set around 28hz, but not sure. I didn't really play with the other knobs yet. I also turned the volume up a fair amount to hear what it could do... did very nice on the lows. Head unit settings (as in bass boost?) none of that is enabled. loudness is off. i have the high pass filter on the headunit set at like 80hz (only thing it lets me set it at). Alty is not in yet. hopefully Monday when my mechanic gets time

alright my shits in and its BANGIN. but the only thing is is i don't think i wired it correctly. I did positive and positive on the subs (both terminals) to the positive on the amp. then the same with the negatives. i also changed the box around a little bit. made it 3.75 cubs tuned to 32.5hz port firing forward. Ill run down tomorrow after i wake up and toss some pictures up. its a wiring mess right now so i warn you i wont have time to fix it until later.

Mounting amp to back of seat
No cutting fluid -- the carpet will soak that up and it will stink for weeks. And the bits were bought not less than an hour before.

Mounting amp to back of seat
The drill bit simply just kept on spinning and spinning. I have drilled through hundreds of metal plates in the past for construction and I am positive I am drilling correctly. One drill bit was almost ruined and the second we gave up on after about seven or eight minutes. Maybe the back of the seat is made out of titanium? Or some super super super dense metal? Im going to go look for a diamond tip later and if that doesnt do it then I guess im sol.

That is what I thought. I turned the knob about halfway for giggles and the knob still does nothing. The gain is pretty low now.

Mounting amp to back of seat
Also I read through your build log and saw how you built the board. My problem is how do I drill through the metal when I used two drill bits made for metal and it refused to go through.
