Update on the Ipod? Yes Stupid question. Is that somewhat automatic? IE would most Ipods be tickled regularly to download an update or does Apple not do that.

Have a Pioneer 4100ub and associated Ipod adapter. I have tried to plug in a brand new Iphone and a first generation Ipod and neither "worked". Tried both the included Ipod to USB cable and one that was brought with. Both switched the h/u automatically from AUX to USB/Ipod but no sound came out of the stereo. Radio/CD/and front AUX are all 100% functional. Of course all I did was connect them and have the owner of them start playing music. I don't own an Ipod and won't, but considering my boat already has the unit and will at least for the rest of the year I'd like to be able to use others. Is there some trick to using it? The h/u manual doesn't at all talk about connecting it. I might be around an Ipod tomorrow to test. I will grab a USB stick and bring that out with me tomorrow tom make sure the USB portion is working. Edit: This setup came with a boat I bought a week and ago.

You aren't going to learn anything from buying those drivers. Complete opposite of what a first timer should look into. Before making recommendations on drivers or setups though tell us how you expect the learning and crossover design to go. The amount of effort you put into the front end will FAR outweigh any driver selection or anything else. You cannot even consider drivers until this is defined either. If your idea of learning is to ask a few questions on the forum, then yes indeed you will need to shop CL. Also curious on the most advanced math class you have taken since you might need it....

Well from what I was told from ppl who have the SDC is that the SDC can be crossed over higher. A lot higher than 80hz (which is apparently high for the 187) and can cover some of the mid bass that will be missing from the 5.25 speakers I'll have. I mean I'm basically looking into the SDC bc im told it can play higher (into midbass territory) than the average subwoofer, where most will roll off or sound to quiet. I'm getting it to cover up the gap in sound I wont have/will be lacking. Thats the main reason. Can the 187 do this? B/c from what I hear it can, but not as well as the SDC. Keep in mind all my sound will be coming from 5.25 components. Part of the problem here is that generally people who buy SDC's don't know what they are doing in the first place and all of them seem to blindly recommend what they have. "A lot" higher crossover point can be had on many subs. Hell the Aura NS12 plays really nice nearly to 1kHz in the right enclosure although it'll beam like crazy that high. You will also see me recommend a ton of 8" subs to be used as midbasses and not subs since IMO they are better geared for that in the first place. Its already been said here, but the real problem with the people you are getting advice from is that they don't know the difference between a high tuning and high frequency roll off. Again, you should take a step back and describe your need a little better...and that shouldn't come from things you've read but what your ears tell you. Should be rather easy to figure out as well. Listen to your mids and determine where the roll-off is that you want to reinforce. Once you know that choosing a driver and alignment will be easier.

Lol, how are you going to design the crossovers for those drivers? If you truly are, first step is to go down to a 2 way and not a 3 way and no horns. You don't have the measurement equipment nor any part of the know how to even come close to that. 2nd bit of obvious advice is to scrap the 5.1. Completely USELESS for music as it isn't encoded that way (exceptions sure, but I bet that doesn't define your collection). Definitely not bandpass. Your reasons for being partial to them is based on misinformation. Why would you use 2 full range drivers? ...and then add mids and shitty bullet tweets? In reality you should just buy something off CL. Either that or spend WAY more time reading about audio.

Eyes are the best detector after that nearly anything modern and not ultra low end will work
