Per request And some interior pics. Amusingly the stock HK system does a better job than most car audio enthusiasts cars I've been in. Could be improved, sure, but I haven't put CD's in it yet. Drove a whopping 20 miles. Managed to get some Dire, ZZ, Steely Dan, and a few other decently recorded tunes through it. Can't wait to pull out some Mingus and see what I'll need to address.

Crap, 8445 has nothing but all the ones around it have everything. 8454,8443, 8053, 8455 all carry crossovers yours doesn't. That is going to severely limit your SQ more than any drivers. Thought about selling it an upgrading? If not, I would highly suggest mounting the drivers as coaxial or close together as possible. Even then you might just be better off with a passive set.

You really don't get it do you. As that consumer did you listen to EVERY speaker before making a decision? Obviously I know the answer is no which means you have a very small sampling. Real measurements allow you to evaluate EVERY driver that you would like to for your application and know EXACTLY how it will perform in comparison to others. It is way faster to screen drivers up front and listen to just a few than the other way around which gets us to the point of listening to music faster. Really simple, not sure why you and your camp completely doesn't get it.

For an SQ setup it is all about the driver, which was what I meant about the off axis. Most home audio drivers are designed primarily for on axis work so picking one that is appropriate for your needs we will have to take your door/kick mounting into account. Of course, this was related to my frequency response question as smaller diameter tweeters usually do better off axis. I am curious as to why the kicks won't be custom, don't you have to make them anyways? You also seem to say no to the A pillar but then offer it as a solution. If you go the A-pillar route knowing a bit more about your dash and vehicle would help as there are many that really stink for that application. Luckily your weight concern isn't really an issue, no seat of the pants or measurable difference over 10lbs here or there. Which Eclipse H/U do you have (or better yet what processing does it have)? Need to really know what it can do for processing to help as this will greatly influence both driver and location recommendations. They are COMPLETELY intertwined.

This is not true. I went from a 4v radio to a 5v radio and gained almost a full db. Granted the two radios were on whole different spectrums when it comes to performance. But none the less, there is a noticeable difference. Can you prove the gain was solely because of the difference in preout voltage? Yes, I changed NOTHING else. A few people on here can attest to it. Simply switched radio's, and I went from a 150.6 to a 151.4. That only proves your setup wasn't optimized with the other headunit. Gain = gain and there is no way around that. If your amp cannot deal with a 2V signal or 1V peak and still provide the gain it is supposed to it is faulty, no reasonable amp requires 4V to get to max output. Of course there is a knob and you could have surely influenced what it would do significantly with that knob. Definitely user setup made the difference in your case.

Decent sound is subjective. I guarantee your vehicle wouldn't please me. Considering the OP's goals a midbass should be better than a highly efficient mid, but it will then require a butt-ton of power. Underlapping between a horn and a midbass can sometimes make up the difference and not be so important for his goals. There are subs/midbasses that can play high enough to not even need to and as long as they have the thermal and excursion potential to do what is necessary they might work better than a pro mid. In your case it is different as your tweeters cannot dig anywhere near where a horn can, so using a screaming bullet tweet does require that solution. edit: I dig the 8NDL51's so don't take that wrong

Large format possible? What are you using for processing? How does your mid "sound" playing to 2kHz? Do you want to push it that high? Where are you mounting your mid? Will they be on axis or off or do you have the liberty of maximizing the install aiming based on how they sound. Do you have a textile/metal preference? we need a lot more information before anyone can give you an educated response. Those Scan's maybe similar to the F1's but it is not the driver btw.
