With your budget and desire I would ONLY run a DIY set. Buying anything off the shelf would be a waste. Now the next question is what do you have for processing to do this. If the $1000 has to include a crossover and another 2chn of amplification we need to know. Also, where does deadening fit in your budget? No deadening and $10000 speakers will sound worse than the $225 drivers and deadening in my truck guaranteed. Install is really, really important. I would also highly agree with Jim. What have you heard that you like??

wow this is the first time I can remember that my name wasn't listed first.

My guess is that they are both more efficient than my JL 1000/1 which I am running with a 450/4 and only the big three for electrical upgrades. I also have a 105amp alt.

The main reason for going three way to me is to get a wicked midbass. Typically as Scott stated above you won't be able to get much more than 200-300hz out of it which being up front will really help keep your stage right and having the rest of the drivers higher will bring it way up. I am in the slow process of a vehicle swap and will be doing just that. Personally I can't wait. edit: I would highly recommend going all active and using no passives at all even though it can be done.

Generically I'd have to recommend a full 3 way, but as I stated I have heard a setup that dropped my jaw with just a midbass and a 3" driver.

I thought there were a couple 8053's for sale via members on this board. Really good crossovers are included on that deck.
