Posted July 31, 200718 yr Well, Im new here so why not annoy all the old timers with the question of what should I buy.The basics:2006 Hyundai sonata - large trunk, around 16-17 cubes, partially deadened.I generally prefer sealed, although ported could work.I dont want to use more than 2 cubes, and preferably less.I am looking at quite a few different amps, but assume 600-1000 watts at a 2 ohm load.I would like to see 134 db.I am not dead set on any particular size, although I have considered two or three 10", or a pair of 12s, maybe a single 15.Would like to keep it under $250 usd for the sub.I have used elemental designs, alpine, kicker, and a couple other lesser brands but for various reasons I just wasnt satisfied. What can you guys suggest? Thanks,Barry Edited July 31, 200718 yr by dogstar
July 31, 200718 yr Under $250? You may need to add some fundage to that total number if you plan on getting something decent as far as amp AND sub go.You should take a close look at Ascendant Audio subs. They may fit in your price range. You should also look at the Soundsplinter RL-i 10"Others to consider are the Mach5Audio MAW-15 and the Sundown SD-1 12"Either one of those would be good for you without breaking the bank. As far as an amp goes... you pay for quality. That's where I would spend the majority of the "extra" money that I suggested.
July 31, 200718 yr Author Sorry, I should have clarified.Amp is a whole separate issue, I am expecting to spend anywhere from $170-500+ for the amp.Might just use my nine.1, but I am looking at a RF 25-to-Life punch150 or a merlin md23 for budget options.Or a Dei 1100d if I can find one. What about the Ascendant Assassin 8s?I have always liked the idea of smaller subs throwing down heavy hits.Any ideas how many 8s with how much power to hit mid 130s sealed??3? 4? on 800-1000?
July 31, 200718 yr There is no possible way to calculate SPL without testing it in car.Just tooooo many variables. If you want to actually hit some big numbers, then you need to build a ported box, use as much space as you want to (in your case 2 cubes), and then find a Sub or subs that will fit in that space.I'm not sure what the Assassin wants ported, but I would guess at 2cuft, 2 of them would be right at home.
July 31, 200718 yr Admin john said much of what I was going to say, but the Mach5 MAW subs are a steal for the money. The RL-i is a solid sub with a great motor and clean sound, the Ascendant subs are priced well and brand new back on the market.
July 31, 200718 yr Author Dang, none of you have a crystal ball... I wasnt really expecting a complete run down of exactly what I will do with each setup, just hoping that someone had some experience with the 8s and might venture a guess as to what would be needed.Guess I may try some just for grins.
July 31, 200718 yr Admin Well the 8" Assassins are brand new to market so no one really has tested them yet.
July 31, 200718 yr Plus box size, car frequency, car power source box location, amp type, barometric pressure, altitude all play key factors in determining loudness.
July 31, 200718 yr Author I do understand a few of the factors involving loudness, and I acknowlege many more which I dont fully understand such as cabin gain and cancellation. Thank you Denim, for clarifying that the Assassins are not a well known quantity. They still look like a nice option, and everything I have heard about their older stuff (unless I am confusing them with another company) seems like they might work.I may just go with the Mach 5 stuff for simplicity sake and see how it sounds, plus it comes from Canada rather than crossing our lovely "free trade" border. I think I will get one of the 25-to-life punch150s for power and once I decide on subs Ill be sure to let you know whether I guessed right or not.
August 1, 200718 yr Admin Let me know what you decide and maybe we can give you a little combo deal from the SSA shop.
