I have four original Assassin 8's BNIB sitting in my closet that I was going to use for my car but I've decided to get out of car audio so now I'm thinking about using them for my home theater/stereo.

I've already decided on some Acculine Tower and center speakers so my thoughts are to build two sub towers to go off to the sides of the L/R main Towers, each containing two of the Assassin 8's. It'll mainly be for movies and video games but I'd like the subs to work well with music. I'm looking for something different than sealed or regular ported boxes due to the rather high FS of the Assassin 8's, I've been thinking of an Aperiodic Bi-Chamber (ABC) or Transmission Line box. Frequencies under 20hz really aren't that big of a deal to me since I have no desire to shake everything off my walls and/or have my neighbors experiance an earthquake.

I plan on powering the four 8's with a Crown XLS-402D. Any sugestions on an enclosure or can anyone give me any help on designing a transmission line box?

Both sound like interesting propositions. I personally would like to see you do an ABC with them. I have always enjoyed what they can do (if I was in the mood for a ported setup).

402 should be plenty of power for all 4 of them... Space isnt much of an issue then?

Anyhow, if I understand correctly an ABS enclosure is only slightly larger than a ported box tuned to the same frequency, but I could be wrong. Could you help in designing an ABC enclosure? That is assuming they aren't extremely large.

Space is an issue but I when I was going to sell the Assassin 8's I had planned on an eD A5-350 (16Ov.2 w/ 550 watt amp) but that's nearly 7cu ft! I think my wife wouldn't like that much, that and I've never liked the idea of a sub in the corner. I also currently have some old 15" Sansui stone henge speakers from the 80's so two main towers plus two sub towers would probably take up less space and sound better and louder than what I currently use. The recommended ported box size for the Assassin 8's is .7 cu ft, so four of them would be 2.8 cu ft for four of them roughly. I would like to do two tower like sub enclosures instead of the old rectangle box you usually see. I think my wife would be more accepting of that next to the towers.

I've recently somewhat thought about the possibility of just going sealed since it's much more simple to build but I am concerned about the 46.5 fs of the 8's. I know the box will change the fs but any freq. below that will roll off quick. So I'm guessing (I haven't looked at WinISD yet about this..) anything under 35hz or so will drop off quick even though 4 of them will help remedy this but even still this should be less than ideal for home theater use but ok with music reproduction. I need a good balance, something that'll drop low for the explosions in movies but something that will sound good with music too.

Any recommendations?

I've been considering TL's as well. The design I like uses two subs per tube mounted in small boxes with the tube firing upward. The subs are mounted on opposing sides face-to-back and wired out of phase. This effectively cancels non-linearities of the drivers. For eight inch drivers, a ten inch ID tube is probably about right... either PVC or Sonotube.

The one thing I would change (or rather add) is an aperiodic matt at the face of each driver. For eight inch subs, this is accomplished by sandwiching damping material between eight and ten inch fine mesh grills. This lowers Fs and dampens driver ring. BTW, this works with IB subs as well.

Assuming a final Fs of 20Hz, a good "starting point" regarding tube length is fourteen feet. I hope you have a tall ceiling =) Another option is to use two or three concentric tubes, which will decrease overall length fifty to sixty-seven percent. This complicates the design since you have to calculate effective tube volume by subtracting the volume of the smaller inner tube(s) from the larger outer tube(s).
