Posted April 6, 200817 yr Since Mach5 is heading down my way soon (Australia), i'd love to get one or more of these in my car, a 95 Hyundai Excel (Accent for you North Americans). I see everyones using them for HT setups, but no-ones using them in their rides, only the MJ-18's. Can it be done, or do i have to use the MJ's? Got 8-ish cubes in the back, or almost 20 if i decide to wall it Cheers.
April 6, 200817 yr From the reviews that some of the members here are posting, I'd see no reason why not.
April 6, 200817 yr Go sealed with the IXL-18 - 4-5 cubes would be fine. Going ported might end up in too heavy an output for you. Unless of course, you like that sort of thing...Best,Mark

April 7, 200817 yr Well, to make use of port output we would be talking a tuning of about 30Hz or so. You can do 6 cubes tuned to 30Hz. Go with 57 sq inches of port 23" long. That should give some real good output.Or, go with 6 cubes tuned to 32Hz - 60 sq. inches of port 21" long.Gives me an idea actually...
April 7, 200817 yr Author Thanks Mark, thats the perfect tuning i was looking for, and at 6 cubes they'll fit in easily!
April 20, 200817 yr I'm leaning towards an ixl18.4 in infinite baffle... or atleast that's the plan. I'm just looking for a woofer to cover the 10-50 hz range, the lower the better. I might have to step it up to 2 ixl18.4's if the output below 16 hz isn't enough, lol.
April 20, 200817 yr Author I'd love to do IB in this car, getting the frequency down into the teens sounds hella fun. But since its a hyundai POS, i can see the hatch popping open on low notes
April 24, 200817 yr That's what tie-downs are for.Speaking of which........I remember attending a show where one of the cars had its doors winched shut using some aircraft grade 6" wide tie down. I think it was a festiva. Sorry about the flashback.....Anyways, a ported IXL 18 should be pretty crazy.
April 24, 200817 yr Author That's what tie-downs are for.Would attract too much attention from the boys in blue.Any ETA on aussie prices of these subs yet mark?
July 3, 200817 yr Author Alright, bumping this up, cause mark i need some help. Currently, after some rough calculations, my wall is 24cuft (net)big in my car. I have 2x IXL.18's, obvioulsy 24 cubes is too big for your suggested 6cubes @ 30/32hz. Port and subs would displace 2-2.5, but i've still got about 9-10 cubes too much. ANY chance they'd play well or at all in 10cubes each? I'd grab 2 more, but that means making a clamshell to fit, and that itself would take up a few cubes, making each sub 4.5 cubes net.If not, looks like i'm gonna have to seal away 1/3rd of my wall.the wall so far: Edited July 3, 200817 yr by RAD
July 3, 200817 yr Author Ahh, but how much more? I've got about 320sqin available on the baffle, the original spec was for 120sqin.EDIT: 250sqin by 23" long comes to about 29~hz on RE's calculator. Any good? Edited July 3, 200817 yr by RAD
July 3, 200817 yr 250 sq. inches of port 26.5" long will put you at 30Hz tuning. Port takes up almost 4 cubes, so you are left with around 20 cubes. I hope you like your low end cuz you're going to get a lot of it... Best,Mark

We'll see how it performs over the weekend once its done.
July 5, 200817 yr Author Quick update, i made the port, its damn huge, and thats an understatement. Quick test in the car, and not much air is moving through it, although given my baffle isnt sealed off and permanant yet, some air loss is to be expected. Also, a fair few people on an aussie forum say its too big, and that i should be shooting at half the size, so the original plan of around 120sqin sounds good. May make a test port of 120sqin, by abot 6-8in long, should tune just as low apparently.Oh, also did a very very bad thing: puctured the surround with a screw driver. Usually super glue or nail varnish works, but this foam didnt like it and swelled up. Ordered a new woofer, the punctured one can be a backup if i ever blow one, or have some fun with HT Edited July 5, 200817 yr by RAD
