So i was at my local shop and i was talking to the manager about buying a alpine 9887 and he was trying to tell me that I was making a huge mistake and active isnt worth all the time spent shaping the crossovers and then he told be the 9887 will not low pass the mid up too 2500 hz like i want to for my mli-65s so i ask all of you is he right that i would need more processer or is he full of it. Thanks for any help Brian

Um, he's an idiot. Page 15 on the manual shows the crossover frequency in 3 way mode to be all the way up to 20kHz on the mid.

I can highly recommend that you don't do business with that store.

yeh thanks M5 hes a big di** when i dont buy his stuff he told me i was basically an idiot for using mach5 and seas he also mentioned something about me probably burning up my tweeters since this was my first time doing an active setup, what can i do to make sure i dont fry anything???? My first active setup i ended up blowing out a mid. But i've not had any problems with my tweeters.

I don't think the guy's necessarily that bad. Not many dealers truly know their own products' capabilities, and he'll always tell you you shouldn't buy a brand that he doesn't sell. Don't read into it too much, but you really shouldn't need to go to a dealer anyways. Just follow the advice given by the members here and you can't go wrong. Well, at least with 90% of the member's advice.

just watch your gain and you should be good. My first attempt at an active setup was pretty dismal, but i watched the gain so i didn't burn anything Just gotta be careful how far you turn that knob up

And double check your wiring. If you run you midrange amp outputs to your tweeters you will have issues. Always start with the gains all the way down and play around with things at a really low volume.

Shame he is not close, so he could hear my mach5/seas active front stage. Then we would not have to say a word and just watch his face as ignorance changes to understanding.

I have zero tolerance for people who are selling a product and specifically give you advice saying that it doesn't do something it can or does do something it can't. An, "I am not sure, but will check" is always acceptable but what he did is complete bullsh*t. That is the sort of thing that makes all sales people look bad and even worse if it is an owner of a store. I'd say screw that store.

It is a shame he is so closed minded as well. Considering people who are using drivers such as the OP spend time on the install and making things right, he should realize that the best and most profitable thing his store can sell is installation. And since it is BY FAR the most important part of the install he should have seen the dollar signs and offered to help. Of course this is exactly part of what is wrong and killing the car audio industry as many of the people in it shouldn't be.

Your last sentence says it all. It is unfortunate, but it is what it is. Funny thing is the manufacturers who support these dealers don't seem to catch on to these sort of things.

I just installed my first active setup with the 9887. Just make sure the tweets are on the rear channels and the mids on the front channels, and put the switch on the bottom of the unit to "3-way". The sound is a big difference and more to my liking now, specially with time alignment. Good luck, go active
