Bioassays, which usually depend on a comparison between the sample to be tested and a standard prepartion of a known drug, are of two kinds.

1. analytical dilution assays, in which there is only a quantitative difference between two drug preparations, and the test preparation contains an unknown quantity of the standard. Analytical ldilution assays have the same purpose as chemical deternimations, and they are used only when no adequate chemical methods are available, as for example, insulin preparations for which chemical assays (combustion analysis, acid-base titration, chromatographic analysis, spectral analysis) provide no information about the biological potency of the product. In analytical dilution assays, provided that the standard and the unknown have the same chemical composition (i.e., providing that they are both insulin), the final assay result does not depend on the exact assay method used nor on the animal species used.
