I doubt you can get the birch and oak to stain the same. the oak is a tighter harder grain IMHO. I would stain then separately with 2 different shades to try and get a match, if thats what your shooting for.

I don't want them to match, I want lots of contrast...hence the darker wood...but I'm just not sure what a tung oil or something finish on oak would look like.

Guess I should start playing with the scrap I've got...

ok then, I have good results using MinWax. using scrap and testing is the best way to go.
