Given the diameter or the pipe is sufficient enough to handle the flow, the 2 into 1 deal will sound pretty much the same as a True Dual setup if an equalizer tube is used. If not, there is a distinctly different sound.

The real attribute to the sound is actualy the angle of the valves in the head. Many people like the sound of the Flowmasters on the Mustangs and buy them for their specific vehicle only to find out, it does not sound anywhere near a Mustang. Different valve angle. There's more to it than that, but that is the single largest contributing factor to sound in the exhaust system.
