That won't work. You still get the grain pattern causing whatever variation you have. Do yourself a favor if you need square pieces. Buy a jointer, or find a supplier that will sell it. Should be a specialty supplier. You may also have better luck buying harder wood boards. Pine and Poplar seem to be the worst. When you get into the harder woods, it gets better.

doesn't need to be dead on square, or pretty, for that matter, so it works out fine

we really have no need for a jointer...yet...

I was talking about if I suffered the trauma... but yes that navel area with a tight tug. Mine always comes with the "about to puke" taste in my mouth and I'll randomly burp or hiccup.
