Not quite a Nightshade, nor an NS, but either way on sale right now.

These driver's resememble the ns-794-4a's at a way better price. What is the biggest differance between these 2 drivers acoustically? Is this to replace the 794's?

The don't give spec sheet that I could find?

Not sure. Thought about calling Aura's head designer to find out, but figured I should look on the internet first :)

Those are the Mobile Reference drivers. They came out along with the originals but were tailored for automotive use. I remember auditioning a pair of these roughly 10-12 years ago, but could not justify spending $1K on a driver. IIRC, these were the first $1K retail driver in the automotive world.

The specs are within uncertainty/repeatability of the NS drivers. Makes me want to buy a pair as I actually really like the way they look. Grill them most of the time with speaker fabric and then BAM take the grills off.

Volkswagen has officially announced a recall of 168,275 Jetta TDI and Golf TDI models as well as certain Audi A3 TDI vehicles after a recent stop sale. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from the fuel line that feeds injector number two. Over time, the resonance from the injector could cause the line to fail, potentially leading to an engine fire. Volkswagen will replace the line with an improved piece and fit each injector with a vibration damper to prevent the failure from occurring in the future free of charge.

Funny that the pulse rate of the piezoelectric injectors matched the resonance frequency of one of the fuel lines; you'd think the engineers would plan for that...

They do in Europe usually. Curious where you got that article as I can probably profit from it. :P

I'm sure they did, but as soon as the weather changes one degree, it shifts anyways. Too many variables to consider. Reality often trumps the best engineering.

Mechanics aren't usually temperature dependent....at least not away from where the state changes.

I was just trying to make a point that it only takes one variable to change. They can do all the engineering they want, but until they get real world data, they can never be 100% certain of anything. Something as large as heat soak could affect it, and something as small as a rock stuck in an out of balance tire could affect it as well.

If I had $400 to blow, there would be a pair vibrating my sac right now.

Actually no it couldn't. The resonance of the fuel rail can only be affected by geometry or material change.

I don't really have a need for them and have plenty of drivers that will do more or less what they will BUT I want them anyways.

If it were temperature dependent or related to other variables all FEA modeling software would have a serious bitch being useful at all. The problem that VW most likely had is that they made an approximation on the FE design and didn't verify it experimentally and OOPS oh shit, a mode is in the wrong spot. Probably even related to something the bean counters did to change suppliers or a supplier changed to their mold or so on. Plenty of variables indeed, but ALL are related to material and geometry and nothing else.

Guess who just happens to be looking for drivers? :P

Are they on a sale or just reg pricing?

Make me want to use some plexi. Or almost inverted.

Exactly my point. While in motion, you have vibration and harmonics from everything else, metal expansion and contraction, worn bushings causing excess flex, broken springs causing metal twist etc. . . All this affects geometry, no? There's no way to pool all the variables, especially wear, and throw them in a computer and engineer for every one of them.

Being as how they are buyouts, and they've not been seen on the retail market in some time, just like the rest of the Aura gear they're clearing out, you're likely to never see them again, so if you want some, get them now.

As much as I have to laugh when comparing "sound quality" of subwoofers, these things will sound great and can get with loud little effort.

Back to this, since I missed it; am I wrong in assuming resonant frequency changes with temperature, or is it simply negligible unless state changes as well? Wait, I think that's too general a question. Material would also be another variable correct?

Sale. Not sure they are geared for what you want. Can get crazy when driven like anyone on SMD would do. (assumes they are like the NS).

As for the situation, sale price. One of two things though. Either these are on sale and new old stock or these are re-issues now being built by the Chinese company that bought Aura last year. If they are new old stock I'd expect them to be sweet, Chinese remakes might be fine as well but I bet the variance between the drivers will be much higher.

I should have put the word static in front of the geometry. None of that will affect the modal response or resonance of the system.

*and yes, temperature can but only when extreme enough to change material properties

I don't think these are for you. Have you ever heard and XBL^2 subwoofer? Many refer to them as "dry sounding." I don't exactly quite know how to put it into words, but they do sound different. The Auras are similar, not in relation to the XBL^2 drivers, but in their own right. Of course, it's been quite some time since I heard them, but there has only been a handful of drivers I've ever used that made a lasting impression on me. These were one of them.

With or near a state change, sure. IE, when metal starts to turn into liquid all the parameters change. Outside of the transition range it is pretty stable.

I definitely need to look more into them, but at first glance they look sweet and are made by aura.

Or I may end up with the new icon model.

Who knows :P

Wait, what? I thought they just moved to China. Did not know they were bought out. Fuck.
