UPS dropped off the Garmin today; got it registered, updated to the latest firmware, and it's currently downloading the newest maps. So far, so good...

I remember seeing somewhere that new Garmin units come with lifetime maps updates for free too. If that's still the case it's worth looking into.

Some models are free maps for life, others aren't. Mine has free maps and traffic for life, Lane Assist that tells you which lane to be in, Route Avoidance, Enhanced Exit Services that tells you what services are available at the next exit, and a bunch of other cool shit.

Models with the -LT suffix receive free lifetime traffic updates, models with the -LM suffix receive free lifetime map updates, and models with the -LMT suffix receive free lifetime map and traffic updates.

I find it amusing it takes UPS 38 hours to ship a package from Louisville to Memphis

well its probably going to Colorado or something first then Memphis. makes sense in a UPS kinda way i guess..

i used to work at ups. perhaps i can shed a little light on the subject....

every check in point.. is at a sort. so the trailer it was on pulls into a HUB . then the entire trailer is unloaded.. it go in a miles of belts , then reloaded on a trailer headed to the next hub headed your way.. then it happends again and again and again, untill it reaches your HUB then it considered in the "sort" then its goes on aits last mile of belts,. it it got there the night before the delivery then its loaded into another trailer.. to be unloaded during the AM sort then loaded on athe brown truck you see at your door..... its really a marvel how the system works.

They have been caught twice for selling your info to local authorities for setting up speed traps

Basically, is there any real benefit over a traditional 5.1 setup?

Seems to me like setting up rear speakers for a 5.1 is a bitch normally. Adding 2 more just adds more complication to the mix.

To answer this and your next post it will not provide you with anything at all unless you have a massive room. Like nonsense big. Even then its more gimic than anything.

The best HT set up I ever heard didn't even have a center speaker. Just 4.4 basically. Each speaker had a sub and there was no center. It was a bajillion dollar set up, and the room was treated for it but it was amazing. It just works on the same principle as sound stage. A baby version I listened to was a 5.5 and it was great too. There is some merit to the new tech that is used in 5.1 with extra ambient speakers.

In any rational set up 5.1 is way more than anyone needs and 7..1 is wasting money on extra speakers.

If I calibrated my MLs properly and used some mild room treatments it would by far outperform any 5.1 I have listened to in a big box store with common found speakers. Often I will look behind me because the imaging is so good in the sweetpot I think something is making noise behind me.

Electrostatic speakers are just something else.

My dream is to have a room with a pair of Maggie 20s and a couple McIntosh mono amps. That would cost more than both cars the bike and maybe my guns if I paid MSRP.

Sean can expand on the science but getting that many speakers to blend would be a fucking nightmare.

I think that's why electrostat 'peakas work so well. It's one panel that makes so much of the range that our ears are most sensitive to. No blending needed.
