The Bureau of Labor Statistics says demand for auto mechanics will increase 17 percent by 2020, adding 124,800 jobs. The Bureau's last set of data, from 2010, shows mechanics earn an average of about $36,000, but 10 percent earned more than $59k. Numbers like that suggest that what few trained mechanics are produced every year are being snatched up as soon as they graduate.

Add in the complexities of new cars like hybrids, EVs and clean diesels, and the number of qualified applicants gets even smaller.

That's a fucking joke. I know several very good mechanics who can't find work. The guys being snatched up as soon as they graduate are going to Econo Lube and Tune and other such low paying, low intellect gigs. The bottom feeders. Those of us who really fix cars are not needed as much as cars today don't need the service work they used to. Gone are the 12,000 points, plugs, condenser jobs. They are 100,000 plus intervals. Gone are the valve jobs every 60,000 miles. Engines go unopened for 250,000 miles. Valve issues are so rare that I wind up diagnosing misfires that have been to several shops without a fix, only to find a burned valve. What used to be commonplace is no more. Hell, in my shop only 2 of us know how to build differentials. Seriously?

Sure, most guys are pretty much morons, and they earn $36,000 annually. They have no real experience. Thanks to how reliable todays cars are, they will never gain any worthwhile experience, and the 6 figure tech is becoming no more. It is an industry that is falling by the wayside of parts swappers.

Preach on brother! I think the parts swapping has been going on for far too long. Hell, even the factory "specialists" don't know much. They can change parts like the others, but can't tell you why the part failed or how to prevent it from failing again. It's actually quite sad. I remember being very young and my father tearing engines apart and showing me how they actually worked. All guys can do now is look something up on a computer and tear it apart or put it back together while having no need or desire to understand how it works mechanically.

Drives me nuts too. Anything strange and I feel like I have to do the troubleshooting because they'll replace every possible part instead of looking for the root cause.
