Went from passive to active x-ver for the system

yah I saw that... how are You liking it? outside of the 'newness' of it all?

I have the idea to get a large "brick" of styrofoam and shave it in the shape that I want, glass over it and pull the foam out and have the console. Will it melt the foam?  Should I tape the whole thing or will wax paper work?

OMGHI2U.

I'm currently doing two enclosures similar. I havent posted pics or a thread yet, cause I'd rather wait untill I can show it done. meh.

Yes, You can. Use the green florist foam as UCP pointed out.

I've used expanding foam mostly, it's fairly cheap, lightweight, and easy to handle - cut, carve, shave, shape.

*You can make the general shape (cardboard, garbage bags & tape)

*You need pour the 2 part foam

*Add the details to it (using a small hand saw & hand planer).

*Cover it with a cheap 3mil plastic, heat it with the heatgun (to shrink it & make all the transitions smooth), and voila!

You have a mold to work off of. Lay a few layers until it's stiff enough to hold its own shape, pop out the foam, and finish glassing from the inside.

I like it a lot.

I have the full power of the memphis on the mids so they get even lower. I have the Soundstream set for about 30 watts per side. The tweets arent as "harsh" due to that fact that I have more control.

All in all I really like it cause I can set my x-over points individually beacuse the CDT x-overs sucked, and I even had the sat net 560s (best you could buy at the time)

Yeah I was having the problem with the tweet and mid levels. With that passive x-over you dont have the tweet level adjustment. Some songs the tweets were overbearing (1" silk dome). Other the tweets lacked and the mids would bottom out. None of that has happened and I am now able to turn it up to the point that my ears cant stand it. I hardly ever do it, but its still nice to know that if a car with some sony in it pulls up, I wouldnt have to worry about the mids.

I have to pee!!!!!

I love this stuff: http://www.uscomposites.com/foam.html or more specifically: FOAM-0216 (2lb foam - 16lb kit). I used this stuff for the most recent two enclosures, 8 cubic feet of foam for $50, I only used about 1/2 of it.

quick and easy, for bigger objects, You can make one pour, wait about 5 minutes and make another pour, and so on.

Really easy to carve with hand tools. But is definately NOT something structural. Which is okay cause You are not using it as reinforcement... just a base.

I'll see if I can get some foam pics up when I get home tonight.

It's great stuff to play with too, if You get the heavy duty stuff, it really is like a rock once it cures. 16lb foam has a compression rate of like 500 psi

Cool, cool. You think that this will be easier then a large block of styrofoam? With the expanding foam I will have to make a guide for it. so I can shave it. The styrofoam is one block that I can shave. Hmm...I need to think of how to make a "guide" for it...MDF maybe? in a square and then shave it?

Just ordered the foam. 2lbs, 8 cu.ft. I think that it will work just fine.

THANKS Nick!!!

I usually make a guide / form out of cardboard lined with garbage bag. that way You can have the general shape.

No problem man, it's fun stuff. DO NOT get it on Your skin or paint... it's hell to get off.
