How so?

I've always been told and lived under these "facts" ...

1. Switch to a new oil after the vehicle has used another brand of oil for so long is bad. Different detergents in the oils can cause seals to leak, etc...

2. Synthetic can make small leaks bigger and find leaks that dino oil wouldn't fit through.

Just something I've been told, no telling if there is truth.

I would venture it is safe to say if the truck runs well and doesn't leak synthetic would be just fine.

And in that case I will be using synthetics on my next oil change

I use synthetics only and have used them in countless vehicles over the 100K range without problems. The only time I would ever recommend a "thicker" oil would be to control a noisy lifter, and even then it's just to chance.

The only time conventional oil holds and advantage over synthetic is engine break-in.

They're in the trap of "it's a BMW, so it must be expensive" thinking, when I know they've dumped more money in that V70 than a 330i would cost to keep running well...and it was by no means a deal to buy in the first place.

Tell them to get on the net and do some research. If they wanted something that was cheaper to maintain, they never would have purchased a Volvo in the first place. Of course these vehicles are going to be more expensive than their American or Japanese counterparts. There aren't as many of them on the road. They should know this as it's just common sense. You will be surprised however, that the German cars, at least in my research, are not far off in maintenance costs.

Of course I may just be used to paying higher prices for parts. You wouldn't think a Cobra is much different from a regular Mustang, but when you mention the Cobra part, you can automatically add a hundred for the parts.

Are you kidding me? This is GM, you lucky if they didn't use mineral oil. If it were me, I'd switch to Castrol 5w30 and call it good.

I agree completely, although I don't think in a vehicle that isn't driven hard it buys you anything to run synthetic. If you aren't breaking down your oil, no need to use oil that won't breakdown. From the perspective of a car that is driven 3k mi every 3 months, I'd rather change the oil and filter then anyways which further defeats the synthetic advantage.
