Kosher salt is really just pure salt, but typically Diamond Crystal will need 2tbsp to weigh the same as 1tbsp of table salt. Ie the grains are that much bigger that it takes more volume to be the same amount of salt. For the fries any salt is fine, but I pretty much only have sea or kosher and if I am going to make something much smaller than table salt grains (so it sticks nice) I am going to use kosher since it is cheap.

Warning, Morton Kosher salt is only about 125%-150% so you only need >1.5tbsp to be 1tbsp of normal salt. Chefs will always choose the Diamond Crystal for that reason, in particular when salting meats.

Kosher is just a name, there is no religious connotations it is just "pure" salt.

Its called kosher because it extracts the blood from the meat, thus making the meat kosher....

the more you know

also the term 'kosher salt' is almost entirely exclusive to the US, most other places call it cooking salt

Personally, except for baking, I prefer weighing spices and seasonings as opposed to measuring them volumetrically

and since i'm running 8 gig of ram xp will have to be 64bit, but what about vista? the setup is 64bit compatible

You will need 64 bit vista.

I'm starting to hear that Vista has markedly improved audio over XP, although I don't think my music machine will run it...even if I maxed out the RAM to 4GB, it's stil a 2.4gig P4 :(

Foobar w/ ASIO & XP sound good enough for now, I guess...

Going fanless or silent fans is a bigger priority anyway. Dell didn't design these things to be quiet, that's for sure...

apparently this MB has pretty good onboard audio, but anytime i'm on a computer i don't care about SQ, just want background noise

is it as bad as the laptop?

My dick is like an M16

Your dick, broken vending machine

another 1.25 rolls of rammat on the way.

i really have to stop buying sound deadening for the fiero. to date i have almost as much money in deadening as what i paid for the car. and if i actually took time to add it up i'm sure i have more.

The laptop's worse :P

All of the music in the house (except Cable TV music) is on the pc only.

I'd say in particular for baking as the amounts are much more critical then.

I only bake once in a red assed moon, and almost exclusively with old family recipes that are volumetric only

It's an increasingly globalized world out there, with an increasingly global food market. That can lead to a certain amount of homogenization and difficulty for small producers of artisan foods. The idea behind the "Ten things to eat before they die" gala dinner in Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, England this week is to bring attention to some of the worlds most endangered delicacies.

The spotlighted ingredients in the dinner aren't endangered by over consumption, but from under consumption. Items like the English asparagus that used to be a favorite of ocean liners but that's now grown in only four acres, and the Spanish capers that used to be famous but that now can't get sold outside of the local villages will be highlighted.

The event organizers wanted a thought provoking dinner. Part of the idea is to get some of these great foods known to foodies so that maybe high end retailers will pick them up, thus allowing the small producers to make a living selling their delicacies. I'd love to go, but as the dinner is in England and it costs about $160 (

I can die without eating a rare asparagus, but one day there's a place in DC that serves a $175 five-course fugu dinner. Now that stuff I'd be curious about.

The way the wind is blowing outside sounds eerily similar to the organ on Pictures of Home

I'm alone here

With emptiness eagles and snow

Unfriendliness chilling my body

And whispering pictures of home

Being a cop just got a little more fun for state troopers in the state of Indiana. The police department just purchased 18 brand new black Ford Mustang GTs for traffic patrol, with one being sent to each district. The Mustangs look completely stock and only have a light bar inside the top of the windshield - not even antennas usually found on unmarked vehicles. A few troopers took the opportunity to test out their new pony cars at O'Reilly Raceway Park last week and found them to handle "differently" than the Crown Vics. We would hope so.

Sneaky bastards

If you want a quiet system on the more inexpencive side, use the nZxt case called HUSH. The fans they come with standard are near silent. I have liquid bearings as back ups, but my friend didn't even install them as the ones that come with it are near silent.

I also recoment noctura CPU coolers.

I also hate dell and every design they have.

Did you set it up for every room?

I am thinking about piping the sound to cheep satelite pc's in the rooms I will have audio and integrating sound into those rooms, and I'm looking for different ideas on how to do it.
