I'm thinking about a having a box with the subs facing inside the car right behind the rear seats. I'm a bit worried though that the subs might hit the seats if it's not far enough. Any idea what would be a good distance? The subs are 12" Qs.

Do you have rear seats? Are you just going to fire into them? If you're considering it, I'd turn them around and fire towards the rear.

For soft things like the seats that don't really reflect the sound you only need to be as far away as the subs need so that they don't hit the subs when they move. For most subs this is 2" at the most.

But I agree with Ryan, in 95% of trunks the subs will be louder facing the rear in that type of setup.

Yeah I was considering that too. I just love the idea of being able to pull the seats down and see the subs. Would the fact that it's a hatchback (01 Celica) affect anything at all?

People like sub up port back on hatches.

But as long as you are at least 2" away from the farthest point back of the seats.

That does change things. In order to recommend a firing position I'm going to ask you what your goal is. Is it just to get loud and be a good daily driver/ground pounder?

Well first off it's going to be a sealed box. It's not going to be an SPL vehicle, but I want something that it loud but has a tight bass response, which is why I'm going for sealed. I don't care about sure SQ, but it is something I'm thinking about.

Well I suppose you could try it all different ways and see what you like best! Unless it has to really be built to fit.

Yeah it does, I wouldn't be able to turn the box around or anything.

I suppose maybe I could make/buy a cheap dummy box or something.
