Posted June 3, 200520 yr Got my Orion 1200D from HCCAfan yesterday, thought I would give Class D a whirl while the RF undergoes surgury  for a couple mods. Hooked it up this morning and just got back from tweaking. WOW! I drove that thing pretty hard at 2 ohms to see what she had and one thing she didn't have was heat. Warm to the touch but not hot, my Audison was warmer from pushing the mids. I got it to push a GB RLp at 1 ohm, but it pushed my PG 12Ti pretty hard. I dropped in Kickstart my Heart from the Crue and it damn near stopped my heart . I am a hardcore oldschool guy that thinks the world of vintage RF, PG, and PPI, the stuff from when JL was still an idea . I give props to the Class D stuff (at least some of it) after seeing first hand the efficiency behind it. I could mount the Orion under the seat without fear of it overheating. And they back up the numbers, it was hitting as hard as the RF does, and there would be no way I could touch that beast after a good workout like that. I am impressed.
June 3, 200520 yr switching power supplys are ok i guess-----I am like you---I love old school class A/B power for more dynamic headroom and overall warmth of the sound-----but for power class D is were it is at.
June 4, 200520 yr Class H with it's mid 90% efficiency rating is where the power's at. Just try and find one, if they exist.
June 4, 200520 yr Author I haven't seen the Class H, but I think class D is OK. I think the Orion will find a home in my son's car. I will probably switch to an old school PG or mod my old RF to better suit my needs. I know the class D can hang with the low impedences, but I like lot's of headroom that you find running 4 ohms let alone the increased damping. Class D has met the challenge of developing lots of low impedence power, but I am a control freak by nature, and while I may sacrifice some of the wattage, the increased dynamics still works for me. I still have an old class A adcom that I won't part with for it's warm sound and incredible dynamics. Need to get my hands on some Rainbows to try the combination. Hell, I still have the first punch 45 and punch 150 that were my first top shelf system (circa 1987),still have the Quarts they ran as well. I cut my teeth on Coustic and have had the bug since. Seen alot of changes in the equipment since then with the advent of digital, but gimme an old PG, PPI, or RF any day.
June 5, 200520 yr Wish I had a link right now. I remember seeing an ad for an amp rated at 150 watts at 4 ohms. The the kick to it all was it was stable down to 1/16 (0.0625) ohm. Also read something about it pushing over 8 kilowatts at that impedance, but I didn't believe it. Was a modified A/B design, similar to a class H. I would love to see something like that in action.
June 5, 200520 yr Admin can I ask is there a formula for figuring out dampening factor on different ohm loads?I ask because when and if manufacturers publish dampening factors then usually only publish @4 ohms
June 5, 200520 yr That conflicts with running a DVC 4ohm sub of a mono amp.How much does dampening factor decrease ?Not to many people run a 4ohm load of their amp for subs

June 6, 200520 yr I know---and even though I am only 27 I feel like I am one of the old timers here---my days of running 1 ohm stable amps are over----I think-----lol. I am contacting PG and see if they can build me another MS1000 so I can have one on the front stage and one for the Brahma-----no luck so far.
June 6, 200520 yr Author Well, at 41, I thought I would finally give 1 ohm a shot. I know a lot guys on here run at .5 daily. Class D is great for developing large quantites of power relativly cheap, but I think I will stick with the AB 4 ohm amps myself. Dave keep me posted on PG, I will join you in a purchase if you can convince them to rebuild those amps. Hell if RF can make aniversery amps, why can't PG?
June 6, 200520 yr Well the TA version is a limited edition----but finding those are about impossiable----ones that are in great condition that is-----I think if I show them the money they might build me one----they said they have all the stuff to do it.
