I'm trying to do a budget build for my truck and am very interested in the 10" 187's. I've got a couple of questions about them.

1) What is the actual ohm load/number of voice coils? According the IA's website, under "187 Series" it states 6 ohm, but under "Recommended Enclosures" it states dual 2 ohm. SSA's website says dual 4 ohm.

2) How much power will they actually take? I know they are rated at 300 watts, but I read a review (not sure where but I'll try and find it) that says they will easily take double their RMS.

After these questions get answered I'll probably have a few more. :)

They look to be dual 4 ohm to me.

You can put more power but if they sound good w/o it then why?

Just because someone says a sub can take double what its rated doesnt mean you should give it that (that is for more experienced people who know what their doing and can hear, smell or see signs of stress). Give it what they recommend, thats why they recommend that 300 rms rating.

Just becasue someone said they jumped off a 3,000 ft cliff and landed with no problems would you go do it no, so dont always imply what you read or hear in your situation (every build, goals and preference is different in installs).

Ok, so if they are dual 4 ohm, is there any way to run two of them off an MTX RFL600D at 2 ohms? I was never really good at figuring out multiple sub wiring.

I'm basically trying to decide between 2 187's (I'd have to build a box) or a single LI (already have a box). Daily driver, all types of music.

Yeah you probably would, glad to hear you dont care about your life.

D1 ohm = .5 or 2 ohm load

D1 ohm (2 subs) = .25 or 1 ohms

D2 ohms = 1 or 4 ohms

D2 ohm (2 subs) = .5 or 2 ohms

D4 ohms = 2 or 8 ohms

D4 ohms (2 subs) = 1 or 4 ohms

we used the 187's in a install recently and was really impressed by the performance off of thier rated power.

the biggest reward to us, on this install is we did not have any need to upgrade the electrical,

a nice, inexpensive install that does not tax the current electrical system, yet gives big sound!

1)I think the subs only come it dual 4 ohm configurations, but not 100% sure of that

2)These subs can really take the power. I have them on my saz-1000D and i just had to turn it up really loud one day...they took all the power i could give them, but i would not suggest doing that for very long. I dont think i really ever go over the 300 rms rating on the subs. I have all stock electrical and i get no dimming even when it is quite loud, so i cannot be pulling that much current.

All in all i couldnt be happier with the subs. They perform really well for the price tag. All of my friends are amazed that there are only 2 12's in my car with only 300 watts of power to each...give or take a hundred :ehh:

That 6 ohm on the IA website is the Re of the coils in series, aka the DC resistance. Not the nominal load, which is 8 ohm in series. The Re of the sub will always be slightly less than the nominal load, which is actually how we can tell this is a 4 ohm DVC driver. As for the enclosure section on there, must just be a typo.

As for power, plan for 300 RMS as the manufacturer recommends. You can always get something like a 1000 watt amp and just have some headroom, nothing wrong with that. They may take more than RMS, just don't expect them too. The box you put them in may limit their power handling mechanically, so have to take that into consideration as well.

The 187's are an incredible entry level woofer. I currently run 12 187 12's off 2 20.1's in my truck and they bang and they will do it all day. I have played them full tilt for over 3 hours straight at local shows and never had any problems. The 187's are dual 4 ohm woofers. To be honest the coils are actually closer to 3 ohms, so really they are dual 3 ohms.

Mine sat at 3.6 a piece out of the factory, which makes them dual 4's.

I've got my 15" in 2 cubes net sealed, and it wangs, pure and simple. Plenty loud, good SQ, gets low, and doesn't need a ton of power. I'm giving mine about 425 with the gains set on my KX400.1 where they are at.
